This circles back to a general issue I have of people looking at Utena and any references of it in media as some sort big gay indicator to prove how queer a piece of media is, as it’s usually people who either haven’t seen the show or even understand it talking like this. I’ve recently seen people apply this to algaea from HSR, and it’s like. There’s much more to analyse about the reference other than “She’s gay”. And I also feel like it reduces Utena to just its yuri. And while Utena and Anthy’s relationship is literally the core of Utena, It ignores that Utena is also a story of patriarchy and abuse. Utena and Anthy’s relationship may be the core of Utena, but so is Dios/Akio and Anthy’s and the system they’re in.
