Scott Barringer just got checked in at Horizon. It was a bunch of fuss, but he finally accepted it. At least for a few hours. You, being Peter’s daughter, were assigned to show him around. You hadn’t met him yet. You prepared just like you would for any other new arrival. But Christ… when you saw him walking up with your father you were shocked. How could someone be so fine?

“This is Scott Barringer. He’ll be assigned with the cliffhangers.” Peter introduces, before introducing you and heading off.

The boy sure seemed moody, not wanting to talk, kicking at the grass. He didn’t talk, but he would definitely make eye contact.

“Why are you here?” You ask. That was usually the first ice breaker. It was intimidating for people to be here, especially on the first week, but since you were Scott’s age you tried your best to make him feel comfortable.

“Drugs.” Scott replies dryly.

“That’s why most of the kids are here. You’re not alone, y’know?” You say. Scott just nodded. He may be dry and have short responses, but he never took his eyes off of you. “So you’re all checked in? Talked to my dad?”

“Uh-huh.” Scott nods, arms crossed.

You nod and keep walking in silence until you reach his cabin.

“This is your cabin. It’s where all the cliffhanger boys stay. You’ll be rooming with Auggie and Ezra, they’re pretty cool.” You explain.

Scott sits on the bed as if he’s testing it out. “Hm.”

“It’s comfortable. Shocking, right?” You chuckle, making his lips twitch ever so slightly.

After showing Scott all around his cabin, you showed him where the cafeteria was and where the “classroom” was.

“Is the school work super hard or somethin’?” Scott mumbles.

“It’s normal. Just like regular school work.” You shrug. “Why? You struggle in school?” You honestly didn’t know how you were keeping your cool around him but you were doing a damn good job.

Scott just shrugged. That didn’t really give you an answer but it’s fine. “I help out some of the people here…mostly with reading.”

“They can’t read?” Scott asks sarcastically.

“They struggle. Some people just don’t catch on like others.” You reply and keep walking. “Here’s where everyone can hang out during free time.”

Scott eyed the chairs, couch, fireplace, then his eyes landed on the piano and he made his way over.

“You play?” You ask.

Scott nods, sitting down and playing something off the top of his head.

“Wow.” You say, eyebrows raising in shock. Damn. He’s fine and can play the piano?

You were now showing Scott around outside.

“I like your hair.” He said. He said it so quietly that you barely heard him.

“What?” You ask, genuinely not hearing him.

“Nothin’. Where are the people I’m supposed to be with?” He asks.

“The cliffhangers. They’re out on the lake, they’ll be back soon.” You answer.

A moment of awkward silence passed and you spoke up before really thinking.

“So you play football?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s cool. I play soccer.”

“Really?” He asks. “Figured you’d be a cheerleader or something.”

“No.” You chuckle.

You guys talked about sports for a good twenty minutes. You were hitting it off really well. You both loved flannels, football and soccer, and the same music.

“Where do you stay?” Scott asks curiously.

“With my dad. Just a couple minutes away, it’s not far. We live in a small house a few roads up.” You answer.

Damn. Scott was hoping he’d see you around more. He’d definitely find a way though.

“Do you like being here?” He asks.

“Yeah. I like helping the people around here, and it makes my dad happy. I like to see the kids grow and change into better people after spending time here.”

Scott just nodded again. To be honest, you didn’t talk a lot, just like him, but you were kind of nervous and your mouth wouldn’t shut. But you decided to shut up for now.

Scott spotted a football and jogged over. “Come on.”

You followed him. He looked at you with a smile and held it up. “You know how to play?”

Before you could answer, the cliffhangers were finally back and Shelby was waving you over.

“I’ll be right back.” You tell Scott before heading over.

“Who is that?” Shelby smirks the second you’re over there.

“He’s cute.” Juliette smiles.

“His name’s Scott. He just got here today, he’s a cliffhanger now.” You reply.

“Is he single?” Shelby asks.

The hell? You spoke to him first! You got first dibs!

“I don’t know.” You mumble.

At dinner time, you went to check in. Juliette stopped you before you could even look at Scott.

“What’s wrong?” You ask, noticing her frown.

“Shelby.” Juliette pouts. They were always aggravating each other, so there was no telling what happened now. “I was gonna go introduce myself to the new guy, but she pushed me.”

It was like talking to elementary school kids who just got into a fight on the playground. “Well, did you say anything to her?”

“No. I dropped my tray. I was embarrassed.” Juliette mumbles.

“Don’t be. That’s what she’s trying to do, don’t let her.” You tell her.

You finally lock eyes with Scott, who was getting questioned by Shelby. His lips twitch up ever so slightly and he rolls his eyes playfully.

You smile, feeling a slight blush creeping up your neck.
