A Buddie prompt if the feeling ever strikes: âAmong the faithless, faithful only he.â Also everything you write is amazing so please never stop. â¤ď¸
The truck stops back in the station and Buck is off like a shot, ignoring the way Eddie calls after him. Â Itâs been a long shift, and technically still isnât over, but it might as well beâtheyâre not expecting to get sent out again in their last few minutes after spending hours cleaning up the train derailment. Â Eddie is exhausted down to his very bones, aches in muscles he forgot he even had. Â But heâs not worried about himselfâheâs worried about Buck.
He swings down off the truck and Hen is leaning against the side of the other, arms crossed, her brow furrowed as she looks off after Buck.
âDid I hear right?â She asks. Â âAbby?â
Eddie sighs. Â âIâm gonnaââ
âYeahâyeah, you should. Â Go after him.â
The thing is, Eddie knew vaguely that Buck had an ex named Abby who left before he started. Â He knew that Buck had spent months hanging onto a relationship that everyone but him seemed to understand was already over. Â But itâs been nearly two years and Buckâs datedâEddie hadnât realized how affected Buck still was until he saw his face earlier in the night, until Buck recklessly risked his life to save her new fiancĂŠ.
Thereâs something fierce and protective inside him that makes him want to snap and snarl and claw on Buckâs behalf. Â But as thereâs no one to snap atâAbbyâs been gone for hoursâEddie will settle for making sure Buck is okay. Â So he strips down and heads to the showers.
The other man is facing the wall, head bowed low under the spray. Â He doesnât react until Eddie says his name again.
âI donât want to talk about it.â
âYeah, well, you could have died tonight,â Eddie shoots back. Â âSo, weâre going to.â
Buck lifts his head and glares. Â âI knew what I was doing, Eddie. Â Just because you and Bobby decided to treat me like a child doesnât mean I am oneââ
âYeah, and Iâm not an idiot. Â I know what a suicide mission looks like. Â So maybe letâs be honest with each other, okay?â
That was why he walked away before, let Bobby take over. Â Because he had been afraid of what he might say, what might slip out in the heat of the moment with tensions running high. Â He had been half-tempted to grab Buck by his shoulders and step in closeâ
Donât you understand? Â Donât you know that we care about you? Â That we need you? That Iâ
Buck deflates, his mask of set jaw and sparking eyes cracking, slipping away to reveal the devastation underneath. Â
âI wasnât trying toââ Buck swipes at his eyes, rubs a hand over his face.  âIt really wasnât like that, I swear, I wasâŚalmost positive I could do it.  That I could save him.  And I didâI did, dammit, Iââ
Eddie doesnât hesitate. Â He steps under the spray with Buck, pulling him into his arms. Â For half a moment, Buck resists the pull, but then he shudders and drops his head to Eddieâs shoulder.
âI saved him,â Buck repeats, muffled and wet against Eddieâs skin. Â Eddie bites his lip and closes his eyes, tightening his arms.
âI know. Â I know you did.â
âI gave her everything. Â I did everything right. Â Even tonight, after all this time, seeing her again was justâIâm not still in love with her, but it didnât matter, I still wantedâand it still wasnât enough. Â I wasnât.â
Eddieâs stomach drops, his throat getting tight. Â He pulls back, sliding one hand around Buckâs neck to look him in the eye. Â
âHey. Â Listen to me.â Â Buckâs eyes are red, but he looks up. Â Eddie swallows. Â
âYou are enough,â he says. Â âYou are more than enough. Â God, Buckâeverything youâve done for me, for Christopher, for this team, and yeah, hell, everything you did for her tonightâitâs incredible. Â And it means more than I could everâyouâre enough. Â I see that. Â I see you. Â If she couldnât, that just means she didnât deserve you.â
Buck exhales shakily, his eyes closing. Â Heâs quiet for a long moment.
âEveryone always leaves,â he admits, eyes still closed. Â âMy whole life, nobodyânobody ever stays.â
âIâll stay,â Eddie promises. Â Buck makes a hurt sound, but still doesnât open his eyes. Â Eddieâs thumb gently strokes the side of his neck.
âIâll stay,â he repeats. Â âLet me prove it.â
Eddie sways closer, presses his forehead against Buckâs. Â
Let me be good for you, too. Â
Buck shudders again, but then his hand is sliding around the back of Eddieâs neck and his mouth is on his and Eddieâ
âfeels like heâs come home. Â
