27th: not fast enough/“together?” “together.”
He hears the bones shattering before he has a chance to move, before he can voice a protest that does not even have a chance of stopping what has already happened. The sickening crunch as the racket impacts flesh, as fragile bones beneath splinter and fracture. The low, keening sound of pain that follows, because he cannot even draw enough breath to scream.
He isn’t fast enough to stop it. He could never be fast enough.
It isn’t the first time it has happened. Riko’s cruelty exploding into percussive force, strikes that land too hard, forcing him off the court while bones slowly mend. That only leads to more punishment, more rage, a vicious cycle of breaking and healing and breaking again.
They cannot stop it. Neither of them are anything more than property, and while Kevin’s place in the spotlight lends him a thin shield, it isn’t enough to offer true safety. Jean has even less protection, has no one who will so much as stoop to help him up as he huddles on the floor, cradling newly-fractured ribs.
Kevin was not fast enough to stop the blow, and is not brave enough to move to help him while Riko still stands there. It’s only once the King has tossed his racket aside and taken his leave that he crosses to crouch next to Jean, gritting his teeth as he takes in the other’s pale face, the sheen of sweat on his brow.
They are too young, too fragile, too scared. They are not even Ravens yet, not really, but their destiny is written irrevocably before them. They cannot escape it, no more than they can escape the agonies inflicted on them.
Jean’s eyes find his, and Kevin feels a jolt of guilt go through him, even though he wasn’t the one to swing the racket, wasn’t the one to cause this hurt. The other is slipping fast, every passing day leaving him a paler shadow of himself. His strength on the court does not bolster this fragility that Riko preys on, exploits.
Carefully, he hauls him up, wrapping an arm around his waist to get him to one of the nurses. They both already know they won’t do a thing for the pain, will just stabilize the fractured ribs and tell him how long he’ll be barred from the court. That will likely dictate the intensity of the Master’s rage, the punishment he will dole out, which will only serve to push back Jean’s healing even more.
Some days, Kevin dares to wonder if this is right, if this is how things should be. But he has long since been trained not to question it.
He speaks quietly as they pass the threshold of the court walls, in the careful French that Jean is haltingly teaching him in their rare moments of privacy. “You’ll be all right. You’re going to survive this, Jean. We are.” There’s a desperation in the words, because he is trying to make himself believe them as well. That there is something better waiting once they make the line, once they are both in the public eye. There has to be.
The younger boy manages to turn his head to look at him, voice thick with pain, still heavy with the Marseille accent Riko has tried to beat out of him. “How?” He needs a lifeline to cling to; otherwise, he will break. Kevin knows. He’s seen it before.
He doesn’t have anything solid he can offer, not really. So he does the only thing he can. “Together?” He hates that it sounds like a question, but he doesn’t take it back, or try to clarify. It’s all he has.
Jean stares at him a moment too long, as if he can find an answer somewhere in Kevin’s face. Then he lets out a long, slow, breath, turning his gaze ahead again. “Together,” he says quietly in return, resignation and relief mingling in his voice.
