Everyone's roasting Rhaegar, but I thought it was pretty clear that Lyanna picked the name. Rhaegar was dead (along with the original Aegon) before Jon/Aegon was even born. Why do people think Raeghar asked Lyanna to name another one of his children Aegon--did I miss something?
Because the idea of Lyanna spontaneously picking a Targaryen name for her childāthe same name of one of Rhaegarās children with his first wife, AND the name of the conqueror that made the North kneel, no lessāis really weird.
Less ridiculous than the alternative, sure, but still, why would she. She had her own dead to honor: Rickard, Brandon. Did Rhaegar fill her in about the prophecy? Did she know that there has to be a person namedĀ āAegonā in the war for the dawn much like there must always be a Stark in Winterfell, and the moment she knew the other Aegon was dead, that was when she chose the name? So many questions. The showrunners must know we would remember the first Aegon. Even show only fans do, theyāre not stupid. Naming Jon Aegon required some explanation and we didnāt get one.

Can we please talk about the bullshit that is the claim that Lyanna chose the name Aegon for her son? After Rickard and Brandon, her father and brother fucking died because of her and Rhaegar? idec that ist's a traditional Targaryen name, if Lyanna Stark were the stubborn women everyone claimed she was she would have given her son a fucking Stark first name

Honestly, I feel kind of bad for the people who only watch the show who may have no idea why thereās a brouhaha about #SpareAegon. I think they mentioned Aegonās name once in an earlier seasonāvery forgettable. Otherwise I think most show-only viewers associate āAegonā with āAegon the Conqueror.ā (Which is a slightly weird association for a hero if itās intentional ā¦ not sure what they were going for there.)
The only explanation in the show-verse that I think makes sense of the name choice is that Lyanna bought into Rhaegarās prophecy dealio (if indeed thatās a thing in the show-verse at allāIām not sure we actually know that). Given that they apparently fell into ~unproblematic love~ in the show-verse (so far as we know), thatās the only way I can make sense of her naming her son after Rhaegarās other (dead) son. I suppose it could represent a different kind of stubbornness.
(In neither the books nor the show do we know what Lyanna knew about her brother and family. Itās entirely possible Rhaegar kept a lot of knowledge from her, possibly including the cause of the war itself. Then again, she seems to understand that Jon would be in danger, so sheās obviously not completely ignorant.)
I doubt this is true in the books at all, but this is one case where compartmentalizing āwhatās happening on the showā from āwhat we know about the bookverse situationā is probably a good idea. Lots of objections Iāve read seem to rely solely on information that was only presented in the books that never appeared on the show, and I think thatās kind of dicey when it comes to arguing about whatās canon unless itās just a comparison (which would inherently acknowledge their separateness/difference as two separate canons that are related but not co-identical).
(I actually subscribe to the ~classic~ theory that Ned named Jon after Jon Arryn, the man who was not his biodad but cared for him and protected him like a father, just as Ned did for Jon. I donāt mean that Jonās Targ name doesnāt matter; I mean I think there literally isnāt one. NO TARGARYEN NAMES FOR US! WE NAME OUR JONS AFTER IMPORTANT PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS THAT CREATE MEANINGFUL NARRATIVE PARALLELS LIKE MEN!)
