I've never watched or wanted to try GOT because I know how brutal it is (I can handle brutality on IWTV and TLOU, but GOT seems heavier), but I know how everyone hated the last season to the point it became an expression to not have things go as bad as GOT and all that. D: Eventually I changed my mind at least about a few seasons because there are actors whose catalog I want to check out (like Pedro and Jacob, for example) and they were there... But it's more for them than the show itself, so I'm still dreading it. š But I still want to finish the books first, theeeen I'll go through TV shows, movies and other stuff. Also, I believe I'll be able to finish Blood and Gold today. š
Eh, I mean, if it helps, by season 8 the emotional stakes are nil because by that point it's just actors mugging valiantly as they say words that are meaningless because the plot has been reduced to a bunch of poorly connected flashy trailer moments š Themes, as showrunner David Benioff famously said, are for eighth grade book reports. Seasons 1-3 are great, or at least appear to be, but after seasons 5-8 you can tell they didn't really understand what was good about the source material. They blew their load with the Red Wedding and increasingly lost interest because of the perceived dearth of badass moments after the third book. I have literally never been hurt so badly by a TV show and I live in terror of it happening again, lol. Pedro Pascal is showstopping as Oberyn Martell, and Jacob Anderson was a great Grey Worm, but the latter is kind of tainted to me because GW in the show was in large part only present during its decline, and his arc was a show-only creation.
Tired of the āpeople who donāt want to rule make the best leadersā bullshit that Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon both try to sell. Every single person weāve seen who doesnāt want to rule that ends up in power is absolutely terrible at it. What about Robert Baratheon and Viserys Iās reigns am I supposed to find appealing? They both fractured the kingdom and had wars break out as soon as they died because they did such a terrible job keeping the kingdoms together.
Show negative thoughts don't like don't read:
GRRM makes the choice not to show us book Theon's POV before Bran and Rickon's escape, only through Bran's eyes. Thats a cool literary device and so heartbreaking, we are left to wonder oh Theon did it feel good at least while it was happening did you have time to feel any joy and vindication before it all went bad?
This left so much room for D&D to play with a contrast of before and after, lots of room for creative portrayal of this downfall arc, but they... Didn't really? Like obviously there was a downfall in a certain sense but Theon is absolutely in Theon VI mode from the very beginning. We have a scene of him bungling an execution and publicly breaking down, it's moved to before the escape. We have a scene of him being confronted by Ser Rodrik on his hostage/loyalty issues and just plainly admitting how traumatized he is because he's just that broken down and raw etc. And thats also moved before the escape. These are his first actions in Winterfell, in fact. I know time costraints etc but just... How the fuck do you read the Beth parley scene and not find it something so cinematic you absolutely must render, what's wrong with you, couldn't they just merge Beth and Jeyne if that was the issue?
We just get Theon being so sensitive and embarrassing and publicly spiraling from the start and everything that happens is a natural consequence of his own specific brand of patheticness present there from the start, downfall arc routed in the inherent impossibility of ruling mercifully in a conquest situation and cruelty of war etc what is that. Just as with Ramsay we'll helpfully be treated to many good reasons about how the Reek treatment Is tailored on Theon's specific oh so pathetic and sensitive individuality, alienating results of torture and Ramsay are an escapable force of evil what are those.

sorry for the lateness it was... some full days is2g Iām catching up from tomorrow thsat Iām not at work but in this case... I mean everyone thought tyrion fixing the chairs before the small council meeting in the finale was stupid/a waste of time/useless/wtf is he with the chairs while I thought it was the only decent show donāt tell thing the show did in like the last four seasons bc they didnāt need dialogue but it was obvious from the framing/the setting/the fact that he was taking time fixing the chairs that he really wanted a good shot at being hand the second time/that he cared abt things looking proper/in order and that he took pride in it which... I mean like itās actually in character, it was one of the few times I said OKAY THATāS SENSED and ofc ppl hated it sigh
