he   thought   he   was   good   at   masking   it   by   now   ——   he’s   had   decades   of   practice.   but   this   one   was   particularly   bad.   kaidan   can’t   even   look   at   the   light,   each   and   every   noise   around   him   is   making   the   pounding   pain   in   his   head   turn   to   more   of   a   knockout   punch.   but   there   was   something   he   needed   to   do,   research   he   needed   to   get.   apparently   nico   was   the   only   one   not   falling   for   the   sentinel’s   façade.    “   what   do   you   mean?   i’m   the   picture   of   health.   ”    smile   is   false,   and   no   sooner   than   he   turns   to   look   at   nico,   he’s   turned   back,   grimacing   in   pain.    “   it’s   just   a   headache.   nothing   too   serious.   ”

the   sound   of   his   boyfriend’s   voice   makes   him   stop   in   his   tracks   ——   he’s   been   working   tirelessly   at   his   dissertation,   the   very   thing  that’ll   determine   his   future   as   he   knew   it.   he’d   spoken   with   his   mother   recently   ——   he   left   the   conversation   in   tears,   but   hadn’t   told   nico   about   it   until   that   night.   even   if   his   boyfriend   hadn’t   been   gone,   he   probably   would   have   waited   to   tell   him.   he   was   very   nonchalant   telling   him   ——   make   it   seem   less   hurtful   than   it   was.   but   his   words   bring   tears   to   teddy’s   eyes   ——   he   tries   to   blink   them   away,   but   he   fails.   he   sniffles   quietly,   hands   wiping   tears   from   his   eyes   as   he   tries   to   avoid   eye   contact   with   the   other   man.    “   thank   you.   ”    he   murmurs,   finally   looking   to   nico.   the   familiar   sight   of   him   makes   teddy   smile   ——   even   if   it’s   just   the   smallest   one.    “   i   really   appreciate   you,   you   know?   and   love   you.   a   lot.   ”

❝ danny ,  that’s very rude. ❞ rory’s tone drops an octave as she kneels down in front of her son to scold him as she adjusts the collar of his dress shirt, and then watches him undo her work again with his wiggling.  ❝  okay, you tell nico he looks very hand - ❞  her eyes flicker over her shoulder, and briefly she takes pause as she tilts her head as she regards the choice of shirt, before her hands move to clamp over danny’s ears,  ❝ are you sure about that shirt ? it’s a bit .... dull. ❞

❝  AREN’T  YOU  THE  ONE  who  invited  me  to  join  this  little  expedition  of  yours  ?  ❞  sebastian  gestures  to  the  small  table  inside  his  tent  ,  the  wooden  surface  covered  in  sebastian’s  assorted  collection  of  weaponry  .  ❝  and  there  was  something  about  —  PROTECTION  .  consider  me  something  like  a  bodyguard  to  keep  you  and  your  associates  safe  .  i  need  all  of  this  in  order  to  do  my  job  ,  you  know  .  ❞  a  smirk  in  nico’s  direction  ,  eyes  light  with  amusement  and  faint  traces  of  obvious  mischief  .  ❝  when  you  say  you  do  things  differently  here  ,  you’re  not  telling  me  SEBASTIAN  ,  YOU  CAN’T  BRING  YOUR  GUNS  .  i’ve  already  brought  them  .  we’re  at  an  impasse  .  ❞  another  gesture  at  the  table  .  ❝  so  ,  what’s  the  problem  ?  i’m  here  to  help  ,  not  be  your  eye  candy  for  the  trip  .  sorry  to  be  the  one  to  break  the  news  .  and  anyway  ,  what  if  you  run  into  . . .  i  dunno  ,  thieves  ?  I  MEAN  ,  THE  BAD  KIND  OF  THIEVES  .  you’re  a  thief  ,  i’ve  discovered  ,  but  you’re  the  good  kind  .  the  bad  kind  still  exists  ,  and  they  probably  have  guns  ,  too  .  I’M  ESSENTIAL  ,  NICO  .  i  can  keep  you  safe  . . .  if  i  have  my  rifle  .  can’t  exactly  shout  them  away  .  ❞

it all comes back to her though a haze, memory rolling over memory like lava creeping to the forefront of her mind. the scuffle , getting outnumbered , the energy at her fingertips , the sharp pinch of a needle pressing into her neck , and nico falling as she falls too.   nico.   this time she’s able to force her lids to part, her head only complies as she wills the momentum of her earlier roll to turn back and face him. was it too dark ? or were her senses still catching up ? what the hell did they even drug her with ? she’s not sure how long she blankly stares until her eyesight adjust to the dimly lit , what rory could only describe as , dungeon.  it begins to appear, and nico’s face is there too.      ❝ hey … ❞

she knows this is his attempt at lightening the mood. she’s clearly struggling. but her glare burns hotter than this weather as she grunts and pushes up to stand upright again.  ❝  might be me. pretty sure i’m in the early stages of a heat stroke. ❞ she huffs out, the timbre of words crackles as they scrape against sandpaper throat.  ❝  how are you not combusting right now ? ❞
