Was a very emotional weekend
My Son, who is 9.5 years old, started medication on Friday for inattentive ADHD. We started on the weekend so that he would be with us in case of any weird reactions. It was also the start of a week long hockey tournament. The difference was night and day.
I always thought he was just an easy going kid with sport who didn’t really have the fire in his belly. He was always skating behind everyone slowly-often no where even NEAR the puck. if it happened to come near him it would startle him. He would often be off in his own little world, seemingly dancing to a song in his head, dancing on the ice (or talking), sometimes with his stick blade upside down. We were never hard on him for it, because it just seemed to be who he was.
We started the medication for a lot of reasons, mostly school related. It’s a long, personal story, but just know it’s been a huge struggle, i fought a lot to get someone to even assess him (and once he was assessed it was a no-brainer to the doctor he had it). I never imagined the difference it would make on the ice.
He was in the game. Paying attention on the bench. Skating hard and fast. Playing his position. He even scored his very first goal. He was one of the top 4 players on the team- and even got an award during yesterdays game. The cherry on top for me was the look on his face all weekend. He was so in awe of himself. Of what he could do. Of how he felt. He was so proud of himself. It made me cry pretty much all weekend long. I’m so happy for him. I can’t wait to see what a difference it will make at school. <3
