The following description is the R rating (equivalent of 18+ and similar ratings) for Joy Ride (now playing in theaters), and its reasons for its R rating, as worded by the MPAA.
Rated R for strong and crude sexual content, language throughout, drug content and brief graphic nudity.
All of these are things we have determined are unsuitable for unsupervised children, so the ratings boards in various countries know to take appropriate measures to make sure the wrong audience doesn’t see this movie.
None of these things are likely to trigger any physical health issues that moviegoers have. Nobody is going to be hospitalized for hearing the F word, any sex-related humor, on-screen drug use, or seeing someone’s genitals in plain view.
Despite the very nature of these things being the reasons behind Joy Ride’s R rating, none of these things are as dangerous as strobe lights. This movie has two moments of very sudden and severe strobe effects, making this film objectively dangerous, far more than any potential “moral” danger it may present.
Nobody is going to complain about this movie being less accessible to children because we agree that children shouldn’t see certain things without parental guidance, and that certain movies are only made for adults. The rating system provides the warning about the adult content beforehand. There are no warnings in any movie rating system about a hazard that is objectively more dangerous than the ones listed above.
As far as we can tell, Movie Health Community is the only place on the internet that is currently warning moviegoers about the strobe light risks in Joy Ride. We are happy to do our part in helping, but this needs to be a lot more of a team effort. We need to push not only for more new movies to be made with no strobe effects, but to give visible and clear warnings when strobe effects are present.
