Valentina Magaletti & YPY - Lantern Lit Run
Track of the day // James K - Play
From the album Friend, out September 5th on AD 93.
Valentina Magaletti & YPY - Kansai Bruises - percussion & electronics
Drummer, percussionist and composer Valentina Magaletti (Moin, Holy Tongue, Vanishing Twin) has combined forces with musician, producer and composer YPY (aka Koshiro Hino of Goat) for their LP, Kansai Bruises. The pair crash through Osaka’s neon-lit streets with abrasive drums and handcrafted Japanese electronics that hit like pavement against skin. This is bliss carved from bruises—hope and fear tangled in metallic percussion while dreams of pesto float through sake-soaked alleyways.

Quade — The Foel Tower (AD93)
The Foel Tower is a Victorian edifice in the village of Elan, Wales, which regulates the flow of water downhill through an aqueduct system into the industrial city of Birmingham. It works entirely without electricity through an intricate combination of valves and cylinders, taking more or less water out of pristine Welsh reservoirs depending on rainfall, water levels, demand and other such factors. You could, perhaps, devise a metaphor out of all this for an experimental folk band pumping the clear, clean, country traditions of fiddle and reel through various pipes and cisterns to feed an urban sensibility—or maybe not. In any case, this second Quade album is lovely and strange, fed by crystalline streams of rustic sound but not limited to them, and indeed, reaching into post-rock and symphonic art rock with its haunted melodies.
