THE FLAT WAS already buzzing when you arrived.
music spilled out into the stairwell, bass vibrating through the walls, someone laughing far too loudly somewhere inside. it was one of those parties — too many people for the space, coats dumped on the bed, drinks balanced on any flat surface that existed.
you’d been invited through a mate of a mate. alfie hadn’t been.
but you’d dragged him along anyway.
“promise it won’t be dead?” he’d asked earlier, pulling on his hoodie while you got ready “promise,” you’d said. “and even if it is, you’ve got me.”
now, stepping inside, you felt his hand settle at the small of your back instinctively. “yeah,” he muttered, glancing around. “this is already a bit mad.”
you smiled, adjusting the gold hoops in your ears. you’d put effort in tonight — black halter top hugging you perfectly, low neckline catching the light, layered gold necklace resting against your skin. your denim mini skirt sat low on your hips, chain belt clinking softly when you moved, and your black heeled boots added just enough height to make alfie look at you twice.
he’d noticed. he always noticed.
“you look… gorgeous darlin,” he grinned, eyes dragging over you before snapping back up.
“thank you baby” you smiled, blushing
the flat was warm, bodies pressed close, the smell of perfume and alcohol hanging heavy in the air. you greeted a few people you knew, alfie hovering just behind you — not shy, just watchful.
some guy — tall, loud, clearly already half-cut — struck up a conversation with you near the kitchen. harmless enough. at first.
alfie leaned against the counter, pretending to scroll on his phone, jaw tightening the longer it went on.
you laughed at something the guy said. him touching your arm briefly.
alfie clocked it instantly.
“nah,” he muttered under his breath.
you turned just in time to see him step in beside you, smooth and deliberate. his arm slipped round your waist like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“you good?” he asked you, voice calm, eyes anything but. “yeah,” you said, amused. “why?”
“just checkin’,” he replied, thumb brushing your side slowly. the guy looked between the two of you, suddenly awkward. “oh— didn’t realise—”
“yeah,” alfie said, polite but firm. “easy mistake.”
the guy made an excuse and disappeared into the crowd. the second he was gone, you looked up at alfie, grin already forming. “you jealous?”“no,” he said immediately.
you laughed, leaning into him. “you looked like you were about to start a pod rant.”
“don’t,” he warned. “cos i was gettin’ annoyed.”
“i know you were pacing in your head.”
“he was starin’,” alfie said, quieter now. “and i didn’t like it.” you tilted your head, teasing. “i can’t help it if i look good.”
he huffed. “yeah, well… you do. that’s the issue.”
he glanced down at you again — the gold watch on your wrist catching the light as you moved, the chain belt resting against your hip under his hand. “you did that on purpose,” he muttered.
“maybe,” you said sweetly.
he started rambling then, frustration spilling out in that familiar way. “i just don’t like it,” he said, voice low, controlled but honest. “not cos i don’t trust you — i do. i just hate other people thinkin’ they’ve got a chance.”
you turned fully towards him, hands coming up to rest on his chest. “alfie,” you said softly.he looked down at you, eyes still dark, still searching.
you stepped closer, lowering your voice so only he could hear you over the music. “look at me.”he did instantly.
“i came here with you,” you said. “ill be leaving with you. and i’m standin’ right here because i want to be.”
his jaw loosened slightly.
“i don’t care about anyone else in this room,” you added, thumb brushing lightly over his hoodie. “i’m yours. only yours.”
the words landed heavier than anything else had all night. he let out a slow breath, like something in his chest finally unclenched. his hand slid from your waist to your back, pulling you in gently.
for a moment, he didn’t say anything. just rested his forehead against yours, grounding himself.
“sorry,” he said quietly. “i know i get in my head.”
“i know,” you replied. “and i don’t mind reminding you.”
his lips curved into a small, genuine smile — not the one he put on for everyone else. the one just for you.
“you’re too good to me,” he said.
you smiled back. “someone’s gotta be.”
he pressed a soft kiss to your forehead, arm settling around you again, protective but calm this time. the jealousy didn’t disappear completely — but it softened, settled, turned into something warmer.
and for the rest of the night, alfie didn’t need to watch anyone else.
he already knew exactly where you belonged.
