Just so we’re clear, the “abolish prison” movement doesn’t advocate for “rehabilitating” murderers, terrorists, or sexual predators, does it?
It advocates for a society where we actually care about people, take care of them, educate them, and present them with opportunities so that murderers, terrorists, and sexual predators don’t really exist. Because there is no reason for them to/it’s not allowed to get that far.

Prison Abolition
’‘It has to do with needing to end it, needing more than temporary answers that always seem limited in addressing the long standing health issues within our community, and knowing there will never be an opportunity as long as prisons stand.’’- Hari Ziyad
When I was first learning about prison abolition, the one question I had was, what would we do with the violent abusers? Prisons itself are the problem of abuse. We need to fix the problem of abuse and violence in itself, but that will never be possible if prisons are still standing. Prisons, courts, our justice system let a abusers get away with their action, and on the their hand, they inflict more violence and abuse and it becomes a never ending cycle. Being an abolitionist means to uncover and fix these deeper problems in our society, instead of using prison as a short term problem fixer, because as long as prisons are around, there will be no solution to the deeper problems inflicted on our communities. The prison industrial complex itself thrives off of violence, so how do we expect this to be a solution for abuse?

i watched both seasons of oitnb, and i always had this discomforting/conflicting feeling. YES the cast has amazing poc actors, and i think thats what i most enjoyed.. BUT its fucked up to romanticize prison not matter what. Prison isn't a joke REAL shit happens on the dailyy. its isn't some fucking temporary slumber party. AND its fucking crazy that they created some romance story between a guard and an inmate aka rape.. plus fuck piper.
