"Smash your Clocks, Time is an Illusion!"
Graphic by Usagi Boots
i think if that if we have to do time (which we don’t because its made up) instead of leap years we should have leap hours where sometimes days have 25 hours instead of 24 just bc like. no ones gonna notice that. i can’t cope with the fact that a day just doesn’t exist sometimes but at least i can sleep through the extra hour
Below the readmore is the full essay “Is Transformative Justice A Sunken Ship?” authored by Estelle Ellison / AbolishTime.

“A reassessment of Transformative Justice movement work is long overdue. Like the rest of the world, this subsection of prison abolition finds itself in a new cultural context that’s resulted from new and historic conditions. Many public-facing prison abolitionist organizers packaged Transformative Justice as a viable alternative to police while a burning precinct served as the backdrop for these conversations.”

Too Tired to Be Angry
Crip Time is Stolen Time.
I think I mean that in both ways: crip time is time that I have stolen from the capitalist white-supremacist ableist concept of time. Crip time is also time that is stolen from me by capitalist white-supremacist ableist institutions. That's what I'm thinking about today.
Today I already have pretty low cognitive capacity. I found out yesterday around 7 pm that I was scheduled for an appointment at the Helsinki Functional Clinic on Monday at 1 pm. To an able-bodied cognitively typical person that might not sound like a big deal, it might even sound like a good thing. It sent me into a full blown panic attack. Four days is NOT enough time for me to prepare for a doctor's visit.
My usual medical advocate (I need one because of medical gaslighting, trauma, misogyny, and cognitive impairment and brain fog due to my chronic illness, plus difficulty communicating and processing new information) had an unmovable conflict so I had to call on someone else. I'm lucky that I have a number of people I trust to accompany me, but each time a new person had to be brought in I have to spend a bunch of time and energy (that is in VERY short supply for me) bringing them up to speed and educating them, then prepping with them about what my goals are and limits are for the visit.
Because this is a first visit with a new doctor (or team of doctors) I also received a 40 PAGE questionnaire to fill out in advance of the visit. In Finnish. Which means I need someone who is wiling/able to do medical translation for me, and who I trust with my personal medical history of mental and physical illnesses and trauma. So yeah, that's easy. Even on a good day, I can do maybe 1 hour of high-difficulty cognitive work. Filling out a 40-page questionnaire through a translator going over extremely distressing subjects is ... high-difficulty. And slow.
Today I spent four hours doing it with my partner. We got through 10 pages. I wept, we almost broke up, we laughed at the absurdity of it, and took a nap two hours in before resuming. Then he cooked me lunch, we agreed to resume tomorrow, and he went off to his studio to work.
After lunch, I spent a few hours lying in bed, while printing out (but not reading, because I can't focus my eyes) the information on the CDC about ME/CFS, which I hadn't seen but was sent to me to prepare by a person in an ME support group. I want to read every word, to make notes, to highlight the important parts, but I know that's too much to manage before my appointment.
It was all of my spoons for the day. Actually, it was more than all of my spoons for the day. I'm in a spoon deficit now, one that I know I'll be running for the next several days. One that will possibly take a week at least to recover from.
It's incredibly ableist to not be given sufficient notice of an appointment. Especially an appointment that is at a clinic that is specifically supposed to be helping people with debilitating chronic illnesses like mine. It's absurd. It's exhausting. I shouldn't have to push myself beyond my capacity to prepare for an appointment that is supposed to be HELPING me improve my quality of life and health. It's probably going to steal another week from me, post-appointment. Because I'm not done preparing.
In addition to the 40 pages of questions, I also need to prepare my medical history. I need to put together a series of print-outs on my condition because I can't assume that the doctors will know what ME/CFS really is and/or know how to treat it. I have to prepare my advocate because she's never done this before. And I have to do this all in the next 72 hours, when on my GOOD days I have 2-4 hours of capacity.
Even writing this is giving me a low-grade ME headache. But I feel like I need to start documenting these experiences. Today was stolen from me. Today I had planned on going to my studio to do some printing. Today I had planned on seeing a friend. Today I spent the whole day in bed instead, because when I stand I get dizzy. Today I spent the day with hot and cold sweats, sick to my stomach, anxious and trying my best to prepare for something in the time I have.
I'd be angry, but I'm too tired. I want the time and energy back that has been stolen from me.
