Prompt 20 - Queer
@wolfstarmicrofic June 20, word count 323
“Hey, it’s queer night at the Hog’s Head; fancy a night out?” Sirius asked, holding up the flyer for Remus to see.
“Queer night?” Remus questioned. “I wouldn’t have thought that was up Aberforth’s street.”
“His brother is gay,” Sirius explained. It was a common misconception about the surly barman, who didn’t much look like he wanted anyone in his pub. But old Abbie was a friend of the rainbow.
“Fair enough. And yeah, I’ll come. I’m interested to see what Aberforth’s going to do with the place.”
They were both gobsmacked when they walked into the usually filthy pub. Gone were the hundreds of spiderwebs, so thick they looked like they were about to get up and walk away. Gone was the inch-thick layer of dust on everything. Gone was the sticky feeling under your feet the moment you stepped onto the creaky floor. Gone were the creaks from the floor, and there was actually decent music playing over the ancient speakers.
“Wow,” Sirius said in awe, his mouth hanging open as he took in the colourful decorations. He had to quickly crane his neck around the crowd to check that the taxidermy hog’s head was still on the wall. It was, but now it wore a shiny rainbow wig and a matching bowtie.
“So, where’s his brother?” Remus asked, interested in meeting the man Aberforth would clean up his bar for.
“Oh, he won’t be here. Aberforth can’t stand him,” Sirius said, his eyes latching onto a beautiful drag queen with a pink drink. “Ooooo, I need one of those!” he declared and, taking Remus’s hand, dragged him through all the excited people to the bar and ordered the pink concoction, trying hard not to stare at the beaming smile on Aberforth’s usually dower face.
“Well,” Remus said once they meandered through the many dancers and found somewhere to enjoy their drinks. “Aberforth can’t half throw a good party.”
“True story.”
