she digs her heel into the horses’ side, urging it forward. in her panic, agatha had only grabbed one thing before running: a box of mementos, all of them were little gifts from ryu that she bought for her when they met and sent to her when letters were being sent back and forth. these, she couldn’t part with. the other things, the clothes in her wardrobe, even the books she collected herself, she could leave behind, but this box, which agatha clutches tightly to her breast with one arm for dear life, she couldn’t leave. it’s all that’s left of their correspondence. the letters... oh, those sweet, sweet letters... doting words, promises of showers of affection, of kisses and embraces, of all ryu was seeing during her travels, all the things she didn’t dare show anyone else or even read aloud to herself... it’s all gone. burned to ash. the whole box, dumped into the fireplace like... like it was nothing, like it couldn’t have meant anything to agatha.
whenever she would receive a letter from ryu, agatha would rush to her room in giddy glee and read it over after locking the door behind her. she would hold it against her chest before reading it again and again, finally tucking it back into its carefully opened envelope and placed it into a box tucked behind the books in her room. agatha thought it was a good hiding place for them. her father didn’t come into her room that often, not to get something. sometimes to speak with her or summon her, but he never wanted anything from her room. how did he just happen to want a book from her shelf? how could he think it was okay to go through her personal belongings when he saw that box? it was plain, there was nothing that stood out about it. agatha didn’t even write anything on it. it was just a box. but he went through it and promptly called for her mother. he stood there and accused agatha of keeping secrets, of keeping the letters from them. of seeing and sleeping with someone she shouldn’t have been. it hurt. in that moment as his shouts rang in her ears, she could feel her heart breaking as tears poured down her freckled cheeks in rivers. she stood there and took it until she just couldn’t anymore. with haste, agatha grabbed the box from the back of her wardrobe and ran. ran to the stables and saddled the nearest horse she could find and urged it to run.
her departure from the kingdom was swift, her surroundings but a teary blur as she left it behind. agatha doesn’t stop until her home is out of sight and she sits there for a moment, the box clutched tightly to herself, the reins clutched in her other hand. the weight of the situation crashes against her like waves battering a cliff and a sob leaves her, then another, then even more. agatha can’t go back, not after this. where could she go? not to other family, they would just send her back. she has no friends, so she couldn’t go to them. then... her only option is ryu. ryu wouldn’t send her back, would she? no, of course not, she would try to help her somehow. but where might she be? she isn’t always in her own kingdom. agatha remembers the inn in that town they’ve met at a few times before. they tried to meet at different places, so it would never be suspected who they were, but there was one they would sometimes come back to. she has to try to find her there. agatha urges her horse forward again. she has to get away before guards are sent after her, if they haven’t been already.
it takes her a day to get there. she didn’t have the heart to watch the sun as it set beneath the horizon or as it rose above it. agatha’s heart just hurt too much. she leaves the horse by the inn, but the box remains in her arm. she couldn’t bring herself to leave it somewhere. this box and its contents is her only possession now. frantically the faerie princess searches, eyes darting around in search for a familiar face. she finally sees ryu in the town market and rushes over to her, calling for her name, an arm outstretched toward her, reaching for her. “ ryu! oh, ryu, i— i-i’m s-s-so glad that you’re h-here. “ more tears pour down agatha’s cheeks and she nearly collapses to her knees out of exhaustion and grief, but she manages to keep herself upright, clinging to ryu’s arm. “ i’m s-so sorry, i— i know w-we u-usually plan our m-m-meetings, but i— i had to— oh, r-ryu, i had t-to— t-t-to s-s-see you. “ and this meeting would be more joyous if not for the reason she sought her out. agatha does finally fall to her knees, sobs once again leaving her, rendering her unable to say much else.
