no problem! it’s just something that’s been bugging me for ages, because it’s usually not something that’s done consciously or out of any desire to cause harm, but I just think it’s really unhelpful, and considering the focus on identity politics on here it makes zero sense to generalise people when talking about their oppression. 

yes, all POC do theoretically share certain experiences in the west because they are seen by white people as the ‘other’ regardless of their own differences, and the experience of colonisation is similar worldwide. but other than when discussing these broad issues, I don’t think it’s appropriate to label specific people ‘POC’ when it isn’t their ‘POC-ness’ which is important to their identity, it’s their unique ethnicity/race. I’m a mixed south-east asian woman, so broadly as a person of colour I do share certain elements of oppression with, say, a middle-eastern woman, but our lived experiences are still unique. I may be a woman of colour (although I’m half white, so that in itself makes my identity more unique) but that does not mean that the way I experience my race is the same as all women of colour.
