Five R-410A Replacements Go Head to Head: R-290 Takes Efficiency, R-454B Takes Emissions
Five refrigerants are competing to replace R-410A under the HFC phasedown, and a 2025 Springer study finally ran them all through the same head-to-head analysis: R-32, R-290 (propane), R-454B, R-454C, and R-513A, scored on energy, exergy, and total environmental impact.
The efficiency winner: propane. R-290 hit a COP of 7.91 at the study's optimal operating point against 7.49 for R-410A, a 5.6% edge, plus the best exergy efficiency of the group at 0.52. R-454C brought up the rear at 5.80.
But the emissions scoreboard flipped the podium. On Total Equivalent Warming Impact, which counts refrigerant leakage AND the emissions from the electricity a system burns, R-454B came out cleanest at 13.3 metric tons CO2e, about 16% below R-410A. R-290 landed at 14.8.
The twist: R-454C finished dead last at 18.4 tons despite carrying the lowest GWP of any blend in the test. Poor efficiency means more power-plant emissions year after year, and that swamps the low number printed on the cylinder. TEWI counts the meter.
The practical read: the OEMs bet well. Carrier and Trane went R-454B, which takes the emissions crown. Daikin and Goodman went R-32, which ran about even with R-410A while cutting GWP by roughly two thirds. And propane's efficiency win keeps its A3 asterisk; charge limits keep it out of US ducted splits, so you'll meet it in window units and European monoblocs instead. R-513A, the lone A1 nonflammable in the lineup, ran mid-pack on every measure, which is about the trade you'd expect for skipping flammability entirely.
None of this changes which cylinder lands on a service truck. The manufacturers decide that. It does change how you explain the transition to a customer staring at a changeout quote, because two of the five candidates beat the outgoing refrigerant on the metrics that matter.

A2L Refrigerants in the Field: Tools, Leak Detection, and Transport Rules for R-454B and R-32
What an A2L service call actually changes (and what it doesn't)
R-454B and R-32 systems have been shipping since the R-410A manufacturing cutoff in January 2025, and they're now landing on ordinary HVAC service tickets. Here's the short version for techs.
Same: Your EPA 608 card covers it. Recovery, evacuation, and charging by weight work exactly like they always have. R-454B pressures are close to R-410A; R-32 runs a bit higher with hotter discharge temps.
Different: Ignition discipline and tool ratings. A2L means mildly flammable, with burn velocities under 10 cm/s. Hard to light, but a torch flame qualifies, so the rules care about spark-resistant tools.
Tools: An A2L-rated recovery machine like the Fieldpiece MR45 runs about $1,150. Go infrared on the leak detector: the DR82 ($300-400) finds 0.03 oz/yr leaks and its sensor lasts up to 10 years. Heated diode detectors fade and aren't all rated.
Cylinders: All gray now per AHRI Guideline N, with a red band or red top for A2Ls. Left-hand valve threads mean your 410A hoses won't connect (adapters run $20-60), and a resettable pressure relief valve replaces the one-shot rupture disc. Watch out for noncompliant import jugs that still have discs.
Transport: The DOT materials of trade exception lets a service van carry up to 440 lbs gross of cylinders with no placards or shipping papers. Secure them upright, caps on, and carry a Class B extinguisher.
Jobsite: A2Ls are denser than air and pool low. Sweep your detector at floor level before hot work, recover fully, purge with nitrogen, and ventilate basements and crawlspaces at the floor before lighting a torch.
One diagnostic note: equipment listed under UL 60335-2-40 carries its own refrigerant detection sensor that triggers at 25% of the lower flammability limit, locks out the compressor, and runs the blower to disperse the leak. A blower running with no call isn't automatically a stuck relay anymore, so check for a detection fault code before condemning the board.

CFD Study: A3 R-290 Formed Flammable Zones in Auto AC Leaks — A2L R-1234yf Did Not
A2L vs A3: What the CFD Actually Showed
Wang et al., International Journal of Refrigeration (2024). CFD simulation of R-1234yf (A2L) and R-290 (A3) leaks in an automotive AC cabin.
Results:
R-1234yf: stayed below its 6.2% LFL in the passenger compartment.
R-290: exceeded its 2.1% LFL at every monitoring point.
Only evaporator-outlet leaks were modeled — not a full sweep. But the A2L-vs-A3 contrast lines up with the service procedures already diverging between the two classes, especially in small enclosures.
