- In Greece, I visited a church situated high upon a spire of rock. As we descended from it, the guide pointed to a small hollow in the side of one of the adjacent pillars; it was filled with colorful scarves. She said that the men would climb the rock each year to place them there, as wishes or promises. I don’t know if she was right, but it was beautiful, nonetheless.

- In Italy, in Venice, the main square of St. Mark’s Cathedral, it was so crowded that it was difficult to hear anyone speak. I followed a guide down the winding, labyrinthine side streets. We turned a corner into a courtyard, and it was completely silent, but for the sounds of doves.

- In France, in Paris, in the district of Montmartre, we walked from one specialty shop to the next, sampling bread and cheese and meats. We waited for the crepe vendor, who had taken a break, to return. Our guide gathered different kinds of food, and we descended into a tiny cellar, and tore the bread into pieces to share with strangers.

- In Italy, in Positano, there were lemons bigger than an adult’s fist. The entire town smelled of them; they sold limoncello in every shop. I stood on the terrace overlooking the water, and felt enveloped by the beauty of the sea, and the trees, and the fleeting, ineffable perfection of the moment.

As for where I’d like to go: back to Italy, and to the UK to visit friends. I’ve not really visited Ireland, where part of my family is from. And Japan! There is so much to see, there!
