Myoin, a priest who became the chief priest at Jomyo-inęµåé¢Temple in 1876 decided to erect 1,000 stone carvings of Jizo (Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva) . After his goal was reached, he set another goal of erecting 84,000 of them. 84,000 is an auspicious number and it is supposed to mean a āgreat numberā. And it is said that the Buddha wrote 84,000 teachings. In the end, Myoin didnāt reach his goal of 84,000 but at this temple they have 24,000.
