Branding a nation is extremely difficult, because of all factors that can affect or influence that image. And you are also putting forward your nation as a product. Tourism in the past few years is really growing fast, and because of that many countries has realized the importance of prioritizing their tourism, in fact their now putting efforts and has been marketing it quite some time now. One of those countries that are effectively branding their nation is Malaysia.
How does it brand itself, and how it has been effective?
There are so many reasons contributing to the achievement of Malaysia for being rank as top 10 for most visited destination in the world. The campaign, which is an excellent example of a destination branding, has been dynamic  and adopted a lot of different innovations over the years. And beside from advertising through radio and television, they launched now their own YouTube channel, and also available in Flickr, twitter, WebTV, Facebook and other social networking sites.  Also, to further strengthen Malaysia position in the market, it still continues to partners with airlines, attractions management companies, destination management companies, hotels and private sectors. Malaysia also continues to participate in international and regional travel fairs and as well as local shows, which can also help to market the brand through this.
And aside from social networking and television ads, they also marketed to brand in press and magazines. The focus is to keep the tagline and the picture with less or no text. And also, the music that has been chosen over the years has been really appealing, and the visuals mark on the memory and make the place more alluring.
Mostly, tourists that are visiting Malaysia are from Singapore, Indonesia, and china, which is over 10 million per year. Malaysia also targeting 36 million tourist arrivals by 2020, and they think Chinese tourist could help achieve the target revenue of RM168 billion. And to make it easier for Chinese tourist they are planning to implement visa exemption and e-visa system.
And even though some people believe it’s time to shut down the campaign and renew it with a new tagline, it will forever remain and that is one of the best examples of long term destination marketing, because in my opinion changing your slogan is not really a good idea, it can be costly and complicated, most especially when you are promoting a whole country; it is because many people will get confused every time their searching a website or some information about your product or tourism websites.
