Number two of the four #Fender Princetons in my life. This one is a 1959 #5F2A #Princeton that came to me from @peter.dobson's collection via @theguitarshopca. . The tweed Princeton is essentially the #5F1 #FenderChamp circuit and 8" speaker, but with a separate power switch and tone knob, and in a larger cabinet. 1959 #Fender #5F2A #Princeton. . I used to have a tweed #FenderChamp but I could never turn it up loud enough in my home to make it sound good. Most amps sound better when cranked to some degree or other but I found the problem was especially apparent with the tiny box and diminutive 8" speaker of the #5F1 #Champ. It just didn't sound great at the low levels I needed to play at where I live. Then I found out the #5F2Princeton was just a Champ (with a separate power switch and tone control) in a bigger cabinet...and I knew I wanted one! . Of course the Princeton has the same sized speaker as the Champ, but the bigger box makes it sound larger and fuller at lower volumes. What would make this amp absolutely perfect would be a 10" speaker...but alas, that was never to be. The next amp in the range was the 5F10 #FenderHarvard...it had the same size cabinet as the 5F2 but a 10" speaker, which would have made it the ultimate 5 watt vintage Fender amp for me! Except the Harvard was not 5 watts. The Harvard was 10 watts. It packs 2 6V6 power tubes instead of one...making it quite a bit louder than its more student-oriented siblings. I mean, in the world of amps 10 watts isn't THAT much louder than 5...but it would have been so cool for me if Fender had made a 5 watt-er in a Princeton box with a Harvard speaker! 1959 #FenderPrinceton and 1959 #FenderHarvard, one day late for #TweedTuesday. . Outwardly they appear quite similar, but inside they are completely different. The #5F2A #Princeton is basically a #5F1 Champ with a separate power switch and an added tone control, and has an 8" speaker. The #5F10 #Harvard has about double the power of the Princeton with 2 #6V6 power tubes instead of 1 and a 10" speaker. Please welcome the newest member of the #ToneHenge™ family: a minty 1959 #Fender #5F10 #Harvard! . Yes, after almost 3 years of searching for one (and after one year of not buying any gear at all!) I FINALLY found my Harvard! And WHAT a Harvard...so clean...so PERFECT! 😄 . And oh the sound...it is heavenly! It's everything I hoped it would be. Low enough power (10 watts from 2 vintage 6V6 power tubes) that I can play it in my house (without fear of eviction I mean... 😜), it comes in a #5F2A #Princeton-sized cabinet, but with a 10" inch #Jensenspeaker (as opposed to the Princeton's 8" speaker), so it's a mighty big and full sound for a smaller #amp. And it slips into total creamy overdrive when you turn it up to 7 or 8! Not that I can get away away with that around here, but it's nice to know the amp can do it! Needless to say it is 100% original and even came with it's original Victoria Luggage cover. I am smitten by this amp. After 36 months of waiting, the wait was totally worth it! . #TBT to last week when we were a two #Fender #tweed #amp family. 😖 But time marches on and the #ampcollection MUST evolve or perish. Since I picked up the snazzy little 1959 Fender #Princeton (left) from my pals at @tgscan, the 1957 #Champ (right) was not getting any of my attention. The #5F1 Champ and #5F2A Princeton are almost the same circuit, but the Princeton comes in a bigger box (it does have the same 8" speaker as the Champ though). Luckily the Champ found a loving and supportive adoptive home with @desmo_damo, who will take care of it very nicely I have no doubt. And I was able to finally pay for the Princeton (which I bought 2 months ago!). Can we talk about these two #amps for a second? Cool. 1959 #Fender #Princeton & 1957 #Champ. Oh and 1968 #Telecaster. So: the little #5F1 and the larger #5F2A are extremely similar circuit-wise. They also share an 8" speaker (yes...That big box on theft only has an 8" speaker in it!), but man does the bigger cabinet make difference to the sound. It's much less mid-rangy than the Champ at moderate volumes, which is perfect for me because I can't play too loudly in my place. These two #amps are the same. Almost. 1957 #Fender #5F1 #Champ (right) and 1959 Fender #5F2A #Princeton (left) with 1968 Fender #Telecaster (top!). The Princeton is essentially the same circuit as the Champ except it has a separate power switch and tone control (the Champ only has a volume knob and the power switch is integrated into it.
