This one is from 1959 and it is immaculate and all original, right down to its grey two prong plug and Victoria luggage cover (photo 2). It would make a nice pairing with my matching immaculate 1959 Harvard...but I just bought a Fender Concert a few weeks ago and im broke again!! 😭 But what a beauty for the serious collector... 5 watts ➡️ 2 x 12. . Here's my #GibSunday afternoon noodling rig: 1961 #LesPaul Junior into transitional 1964 #5F1 #FenderChamp. . But instead of using the 8" built in Champ speaker, my amp tech, @marshalllespaulfan wired me up a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter cable so I can disintermediate the stock speaker and plug into a BIG cab! Here I'm using the 2 x 12 from my 1964 #6G6 #Bassman. One of my complaints about the Champ has always been that with its small box and small speaker it can lack...erm..."hugeness". Well...problem solved! This rig sounds massive! 🤣 . Number two of the four #Fender Princetons in my life. This one is a 1959 #5F2A #Princeton that came to me from @peter.dobson's collection via @theguitarshopca. . The tweed Princeton is essentially the #5F1 #FenderChamp circuit and 8" speaker, but with a separate power switch and tone knob, and in a larger cabinet. 1959 #Fender #5F2A #Princeton. . I used to have a tweed #FenderChamp but I could never turn it up loud enough in my home to make it sound good. Most amps sound better when cranked to some degree or other but I found the problem was especially apparent with the tiny box and diminutive 8" speaker of the #5F1 #Champ. It just didn't sound great at the low levels I needed to play at where I live. Then I found out the #5F2Princeton was just a Champ (with a separate power switch and tone control) in a bigger cabinet...and I knew I wanted one! . Of course the Princeton has the same sized speaker as the Champ, but the bigger box makes it sound larger and fuller at lower volumes. What would make this amp absolutely perfect would be a 10" speaker...but alas, that was never to be. The next amp in the range was the 5F10 #FenderHarvard...it had the same size cabinet as the 5F2 but a 10" speaker, which would have made it the ultimate 5 watt vintage Fender amp for me! Except the Harvard was not 5 watts. The Harvard was 10 watts. It packs 2 6V6 power tubes instead of one...making it quite a bit louder than its more student-oriented siblings. I mean, in the world of amps 10 watts isn't THAT much louder than 5...but it would have been so cool for me if Fender had made a 5 watt-er in a Princeton box with a Harvard speaker! Two tweed and two blackface #Fender #amplifiers walk into a bar. Stop me if you have heard this one. . But wait, you say...there is only ONE tweed #Fenderamp in this picture? True, I reply...but also false! While the 1959 #FenderPrinceton in the back is the only one *covered* in tweed, the 1964 #FenderChamp (front, left) is indeed a tweed #5F1 circuit and identical in every way to the narrow panel tweed champs made until 1963. . Fender had changed their other #amps from brown to blackface starting at the end of '63, but the poor old champ had never even been updated to brown cosmetics...they just left it tweed throughout the early 60s! By 1964 when all the other amps had been redesigned (twice!) someone at Fender must have said "guys, seriously, we have to do *something* with the Champ. This is embarrassing!" and they did literally the least possible thing they could do: changed the covering to black Tolex. At least that gave the Champ some resemblance to the resdesigned amps. Continuing the #HalfwayToStraturday theme (this time with an added #amplification twist) here's the 2005 #CustomShop '66 #Stratocaster CC with my little 1964 #Fender #Champ #amp. . I have two exciting bits of news to share about this amp: . 1) I have been lucky enough to get my hands on one of the new @atlasstands Mini Low Rider amp stands for this little guy. When I saw that they were making a stand especially for small #amps like this one I knew I had to have one! I already have several full-sized Atlas #ampstands, but this amp is just dwarfed by them. It will be good to have a stand that looks proportional to its diminutive stature. Check out the @atlasstands feed for some shots of the new mini stand...I can't wait until it arrives! . 2) My amp tech @marshalllespaulfan came up with a great idea to get around the perennial issue of the small cabinet + small speaker = small sound that is endemic to most small, lower power #amps. He's making me an RCA to 1/4" adapter plug, so I won't be limited to the 8" speaker and tiny cab on this amp. I'll be able to disconnect the on board speaker and plug it into my Bassman's 2 x 12" cab, for example. THEN we will see just how good a #5F1 Champlifier can sound! 🤩 .
