Overwatch 6v6: Prelude
So there's going to be some tests establishing what the format looks like in Overwatch. The main contributing problem is the engine isn't designed for it so it's going to take time to figure out. Optimization might well be out the window for half a year or so.
Anddddd I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they just did another Season 9 early next year. A single season of 6v6 to see how it goes with the full population, with intermittent tests of various queue, design and balance decisions.
Ideal, really, but-
-there are considerable problems across a lot of avenues, not just for the format but with Overwatch in general.
Non-exhaustive list
Queue Times are explained and there's no easy fix for how to address that, without some serious re-structures.
Design-wise, a lot of the new heroes are kinda janky for what 6v6 is about.
A lot of the OW2 population has been trained to play the game in a way that is very...off from 6v6 and it's heavier team dependency.
Tutorials are almost non-existent and they would be a big boon for getting a playerbase that has never played 6v6, up to scratch.
Dev knowledge and experience with 6v6 might be limitedd at this point given many of the senior team members that knew it have left.
All that to say:
There's going to be a lot of experimenting, behind the scenes and, hopefully, out front.
and whereas I've got a lot of thoughts myself about what 6v6 is and isn't (and Overwatch in general, really) it is encouraging to think that they could explore it with fresh eyes.
Especially if it means at some point over the next year, they realize the same thing that everyone else is, very slowly, realizing...
That 6v6 would need a brand new game with a new engine and dedicated team to have a chance at anything that isn't just another content drop people will get bored of.
We'll see though...
