I need help from all the Roy fans out there! And with that I mean the people that have read his story in comics and have a real grasp of his characters and morals.
Can someone explain to me in detail how exactly he is mischaracterized when he is paired with Jason? What would he think of him if it wasn't for that change in his personality? How would their dynamic be? I'm asking this because their dynamic already gives me a bad vibe (mainly because of the age difference) and I want to have a better understanding as to why.
Summary: Roy leaves Lian with Jade for a few weeks while he follows up on a lead for the perfect Mother's Day gift for Jade. What starts as a quest for confirmation, becomes a complicated family situation, and a worrisome reunion.
Jade spends quality time with Lian, but she fears that Roy's hiding something.
Chapters: 4/?
Characters: Roy Harper, Jade Nguyen, Lian Harper, Tommy Blake Jr.
âWhat are you gonna do?â Tommy asked once he felt up to talking again. I set him down and held his hand as we walked to my car.Â
âIâm not so sure yet, Tommy. You see, your parents might be good people and all, but your adoption wasnât legal. The people who took you from your mommy, Jade⌠well, they took you without any reason to,â I explained. Tommy stopped swinging his feet in the backseat. âI think I might have to reason with them for a while. I donât know. It might be wrong to expect this to be easy. They might be upset with me⌠But the truth is the truth, Tommy⌠And the truth is, you and your mom deserve the chance to meet and talk.â
Tommy stopped in his tracks. âIâm scared, Mister,â Tommy whimpered, âTheyâre going to be mad. Iâm gonna get in trouble.â I parked across the street, and I took off my seatbelt to look him in the eyes.Â
âIâm gonna protect you⌠Okay? And my name is Roy Harper. You can call me Roy. Iâm not gonna let anybody scare you. If you get scared, you just hold on tight to me. Iâm pretty strong, so I wonât be afraid if they yell at me,â I reassured him. âI wonât even get hurt if you punch me. Wanna try?â Tommy giggled and shook his head.Â
âI donât wanna hit you⌠I want you to be my friend. Can we be friends?â Tommy asked.Â
âHow about this? Iâll be your safe grown-up for right now,â I whispered. Tommy unbuckled himself from the car seat.Â
âGrownups and kids canât be friends⌠Can they?â Tommy asked.Â
âDoesnât mean that you canât have a few safe grown-ups that you trust. A good grown-up wonât lie to you or make you keep secrets⌠Thatâs why Iâm gonna talk to your family today and get this over with,â I explained. âDoes that make sense?â
âUh-huh, but Iâm still not sure about telling my mommy and daddy,â Tommy replied as I let him out of the car.Â
He hid behind me as I rang the doorbell. I reached behind myself, extending a hand for Tommy to hold. He held my thumb and pinkie in his hands. A woman answered the door with her phone in one hand and her apron in the other. âI think we should talk about your son,â I replied.Â
âOakley! Come inside,â she admonished him. She wasnât angry. She was more afraid than anything. âYes, you should come in, too. It seems like heâs taken a liking to you. Iâm so sorry for all the trouble.â Tommy didnât want to go in. He shook his head.Â
âYou gotta go in, buddy. We talked about this,â I whispered.Â
Tommy pouted and let go of my hand. âOnly if you carry me,â Tommy replied. I nodded and picked him up. He hid his face in my sweater.Â
âOakley, honeyââ Tommy wouldnât look at her. I stepped inside, and his father reached out to take Tommy, but Tommy shook his head.Â
âOakley⌠Iâm sorry, sir. Oakleyâs had some behavioral problems lately. Weâre looking to get him someââ
âI had a little talk with him, and heâs convinced youâre lying to him. He says his name isnât Oakley. Itâs Tommy. And he said you didnât want him anymore,â I interrupted. âAnd Iâm not here to start trouble or judge you both, but heâs been very convincing.âÂ
They exchanged glances, and the man sighed. âHave you come to take him back?â he whispered. âCan you?â
âWell⌠Iâ. Are you giving him up? I donâtâ. I donât understand,â I stammered. I tried to make sense of the manâs urgency to let go of Tommy.
Tommy lifted his head and whispered, âI told you they didnât want me anymore.âÂ
âWeâre not equipped to deal with all these new emotional problems. The bedwetting, the pictures, and heâs running away almost every other day now,â the woman explained.Â
âWe made a mistake,â the man added, âAnd after talking with a friend, they said it may get even worse with time.â
âYou can have all his things. Weâll move and start over⌠Whatever you want us toââ
âI just want to bring him back to his mother. She didnât know he was alive. I donât want to punish or threaten either of you⌠I just want to reunite a birth mother with her son,â I reassured them. Tommy trembled in my arms. His father got up to get his things. I set Tommy down because I wasnât sure if I was going to get physical with the man.Â
âIâ. Oakleyâ. Tommy is gifted. Donât get us wrong. He has some truly beautiful qualities. Heâs an excellent listener, very clean, and heâs very quiet and independent. And heâs gifted. Heâs in a special program at his school⌠Did heâ? Did he eat?â the woman asked.Â
âTommy, do you think youâd like to meet your birth mommy?â I asked, ignoring her.Â
âTheyâre not lying to you,â Tommy mumbled. His head was low, but I lifted his chin.Â
âThat doesnât matter. Did I get upset when you showed me that picture?â I questioned. Tommy shook his head. âExactly⌠Because I understand. I know a lot of kids like you⌠Youâre just scared. I know meeting your mommy might not fix things right away, but I think sheâll understand more than anyone else what youâre going through.âÂ
âWhat if she doesnât like me?â Tommy asked. âIs she gonna give me away?â
âNo. Never. One thing I know about her is that she loves her kids no matter what. Your birth mommy has the biggest heart in the world, and she never stopped loving you⌠She never stopped missing you. Her heart broke for a long time when they took you, and I know what that feels like because someone took my daughter away once. A broken heartâs a pretty serious condition, you know,â I gently replied.Â
Tommy had tears in his eyes. âShe doesnât know Iâm alive⌠Does she?â Tommy questioned. I didnât answer. I didnât want to lie.Â
The woman fidgeted with her hands, practically wringing them, before she offered me a cup of coffee. I shook my head, and Tommy pulled me down to his level. âCan we go to my room? I want to show you something,â Tommy whispered.Â
I looked at the woman, and she nodded. âOkay, letâs go look,â I whispered.Â
Tommy took me upstairs and down the hall to his bedroom, and the man was already inside, neatly folding Tommyâs clothes on his bed. âOkay⌠Stop. Iâve got it from here,â I whispered. I just wanted him gone, so that he couldnât hurt Tommyâs feelings anymore.Â
He had stars all over his walls, and some of them were string lights hanging from his ceiling. He pulled me over to a collage of pictures that he drew and printed of space. âThis is the Vega system. Itâs my favorite. There are twenty-two confirmed planets in that solar system. One of the Titans is from there,â Tommy smiled.Â
âYeah. You like space. Donât you?â I questioned.Â
Tommy nodded. âWeâve got to pack my stuff. Huh?â Tommy frowned.Â
âYeah⌠Weâll pack what we can, and Iâ. Weâll get you some new stuff to replace the things we canât,â I replied. âShow me what you want to take with you.â Heartbreaking. I know what it felt like to leave everything I knew to live with someone I didnât know. They raised this kid for five years, and they let go of him like he didnât mean anything.
Roy: Lian, why are there five giant rabbits in your room?
Lian (holding toothpicks): The boys and I watched this horror movie about killer rabbits. Midway, by the way, afterward Damian and I argued if rabbits can be turned into predators. Weâre seeing who can train them to be attack animals and take down a threat.
Roy let out a weary dad sigh, rubbing his tired eyes.
Roy: I⌠ThatâsâI have five questions already.
Lian grabbed a head of lettuce.
Lian: Is it about how I found five giant rabbits? I named them after my fave video game characters.
Roy: No. I have a guess who you called. First, did you watch Lepus Madness? Lian, that is a horror movie. You're barred from subjecting your friends to them after the sleepover incident!
Lian (missing the point): Lepus Madness is rated PG. The babysitter was nearby while we watched the movie. And again, itâs not my fault those girls canât handle a movie about a family in a haunted house.
Roy: You showed them Poltergeist!
Lian (indifferent): A bunch of lightweights.
Roy: Youâre going to stick to that defense?
Lian: Yes. Itâs done me wonders.
Roy: I would too. Anyway, why this bet?
Lian: Damian started it! He said smaller rabbits can win no matter what and I argued, heck no big rabbits can.
Roy: Makes sense that a bat kid thought this first. You canât train bunnies to be threats. Theyâre literally too cute to be threatening.
Lian: Not bunnies. Rabbits. If Watership Down taught me anything, itâs that yes, they can be.
Royâs eyes widened in shock that she knew that movie. Lian smiled sweetly.
Lian: Uncle Con showed me that one. Anyway, I put bragging rights on the line, and the winner gets to pick what we do for fun afterward. I want to go to that new FNAF-inspired arcade, so are you going to help me or not?
Roy (trying not to sound proud): Why are you like this?
Lian (nonchalantly): Daddy⌠Don't play. Grandpa told me how wild you were at my age. Itâs basically in my DNA.
Roy sighed, smiling reluctantly.
Roy: Yeah, before the dark days, I was a cool kid.
Lian: I didnât say all that.
Roy: Iâm going to pretend you did. If this is to one-up a Bat-kid, then Iâll help. But you have to stop showing them horror movies. Clark is still mad at me after you showed Jon that Winnie the Pooh horror spoof.
Lian: Itâs not my fault he canât handle cheesy gore. That movie was barely scary, like I laughed.
Roy: You really are my daughter. Last question, who did you call to get five giant rabbits?
Lian: Flemish Giant rabbits. Grandma supplied me with five, but the toothpicks are basically their blades. Damianâs using a different breed, but heâs totally going to lose. And before you ask, Jon is fine. He loved the movie. The effects were supes cheesy he barely got scared or scarred. I promised to showâ
Roy: Stop promising horror movies!
Lian blinked, her cute, round face showing she had about five scary movies of varying quality and ratings ready.
Roy: Make sure theyâre not rated R next time, you little sneak.
Lian: That I can do.
--------------------------
Meanwhile, with Damian and his rabbit army:
Tim: Youâre going to lose, dude.
Damian (holding a rabbit in tiny armor): Shut your mouth, Drake! I will win this battle!

lian harper:Â Iâve become a bread crumb dealer to four crows at the lake. They pay me with a bit of everything. Like shiny things, fabric, or pens. But recently they paid me with a 20 dollar bill they found somewhere. So I decided to buy them some more expensive bread. They loved it. So they understand what to do. Give me money. Iâve probably racked up about 200 dollars at this point. Is it morally wrong though, I mean. Theyâre the ones who steal the money from others. Or perhaps they just have a big pile laying somewhere. Should I keep on doing this?
damian wayne:Â You sound like the start of a Batman villain.
