Twenty years later…..

NORFOLK, VA (Oct. 8, 2020) -- United States Navy guided missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67) and amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) securely docked pier-side in their homeport.

A calm, routine sunset scene on an American Naval base....

....twenty years after USS Cole (DDG 67) was the target of a deadly Radical Islamic terrorist attack in Yemen on October 12, 2000. Seventeen Sailors were killed as the warship was taking on fuel during a normal short logistics visit to the port of Aden.

A small boat manned by two Al-Qaeda suicide bombers, and loaded with C4 explosives, snuck alongside the ship and exploded.

The fairly new ship’s engine room, galley and living quarters were badly damaged....and, in addition to those killed, 39 other Sailors were injured during the attack.

USS Cole (DDG 67) was transported across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States on a heavy-lift vessel....repaired and rebuilt....better than ever.

By 2002 USS Cole (DDG 67) was fully restored and back on the front lines....
