[20190521] Youngjae’s IG update

On my way to Portugal, I had a four-hour transit in China, and for those four hours, I had to use the Chinese Internet. I’ve read about Internet censorship in China over years, but it’s a whole different beast experiencing it first hand.

For one, it revealed to me my over-reliance on Google. I use Google maps, Google calendar, Google Keep, and Gmail every single day. Google, of course, is also my default search engine. None of those things work in China*. Wikipedia also, for some reason, does not work. And neither does Youtube.

I felt like I was learning how to use the Internet again for the first time.

All that being said, I think that’s a good thing. I think it’s healthy to be reminded every now and then that how we think the world operates is not universal. there are over a billion people who don’t search the web with Google every day, or use Whatsapp to text their friends. 

And just like how the mechanics of constructing a joke in one language doesn’t always translate well into another language, I imagine that learning to browse Chinese internet can teach us a thing or two about our own internet~.

It’s humbling to be a beginner once again.
