Camilla Tominey is mostly right, the Sussexes have just pulled off a successful half in half out tour.....but better. Let me explain.
You'd be wrong to compare it to their tour of 2018, that stopped being the yardstick as soon as Megxit was announced.
This tour was a pass/fail test with only one question to answer. Despite the Sandringham Summit, can the Sussexes do exactly what they want without any consequences? The answer is a resounding YES.
I'd go as far as to say that this tour shows that they have managed to land in an even better place than Half In Half Out. The latter would have tied their hands, as they would have been constrained by the temporary diplomatic hats they'd be required to wear for such visits.
But now? They get to do whatever they want with impunity. No commercial deal is off the table. No celebrity inspired engagement too cheap. No pretense of duty to the Crown.
Who needs to be a "working royal" when you can do so much more with your titles? There is one key difference they got right this time compared to the tours to Nigeria and Colombia. They stopped trying to pretend that they still had political clout, as they steered away from anyone from the Australian government. I am guessing this is thanks to the counsel given to them by BP. There was no statement from the UK Embassy, as there was in Jordan. Not even whatever the equivalent of town mayors are in Australia, came out to greet them.
This tour checked every box they wanted to check. So yeah we can make fun of the lack of crowds, or the victim nonsense they spew, or her fashion, but nothing changes the fact that two members of the British Royal Family just used their British Titles for a full blown commercial visit. A Royal tour where Brand Sussex finally and successfully diverged from the Royal brand.
You can hate me for saying what I just said, but you also know I am not wrong.
