"Many thanks for your dear letter and kind wishes for the birth of our baby—a nice little thing, like Ella, only smaller and with finer features, though the nose promises to be long." - June 17 1872
"We think of calling our little girl " Alix" (Alice they pronounce too dreadfully in German) " Helena Louise Beatrice," and, if Beatrice may, we would much like to have her as godmother...l will add Vicky's name to baby's others, as you propose; and "Alix" we gave for " Alice," as they murder my name here: "Alicé" they pronounce it, so we thought "Alix" could not so easily be spoilt." June 17th and 24th
"Baby is like Ella, only smaller features, and still darker eyes with black lashes, and reddish-brown hair. she is a sweet, merry little person, always laughing, with a deep dimple in one cheek just like Ernie." - August 14th 1872
"The christening went off very well. Baby looked really pretty for so young an individual…My three older girls looked very nice, I thought, in lavender silk (your Christmas present). I had the same color, and " Sunny" in pink, was immensely admired. She is still improving in looks since you saw her…” July 13th 1874
"…Sunny" is the picture of robust health…” September 1st 1874
“Aliky is very handsome and dear." ‘November 26th 1876
“The two little girlies are so sweet, so dear, merry, and nice. I don't know which is dearest, they are both so captivating." July 28th 1877
“[Heinrich Von] Angeli is quite lost in admiration of Aliky and May, who are, I must say myself, such a lovely little pair as one does not often see…” April 9th 1878

In Italy, on June 2 and 3, 1946, 25 million people – 89% of those entitled to vote, including women for the first time – went to the polls to choose which form of government to give the country: monarchy or republic? The majority voted for the turning point: the Italian Republic, shortly after the king (with in tow large bequests of works by Italian artists who never returned) took a plane and emigrated to Portugal, then to Switzerland. On this historic date, the Festa della Repubblica was established, which falls every year on June 2.
