In Italy, on June 2 and 3, 1946, 25 million people – 89% of those entitled to vote, including women for the first time – went to the polls to choose which form of government to give the country: monarchy or republic? The majority voted for the turning point: the Italian Republic, shortly after the king (with in tow large bequests of works by Italian artists who never returned) took a plane and emigrated to Portugal, then to Switzerland. On this historic date, the Festa della Repubblica was established, which falls every year on June 2.
