COYPEL, Charles-Antoine
French painter (b. 1694, Paris, d. 1752, Paris)
This painting and its companion piece, Cheerful Democritus, depict two men with diametrically opposed views of the world. The subjects of the paintings are the Greek philosophers Democritus of Abdera and Heraclitus of Ephesus. Their views of life could not have been more different: Democritus never stopped laughing at the follies of humankind while Heraclitus wept continuously over the condition of the world. There are numerous representations of them in Greek and Roman art and literature, but the theme fell out of favour in post-classical art and was not revived until the late 15th century. By about 1600 Democritus and Heraclitus once again became a popular subject, particularly in the Netherlands, and the philosophers are depicted either in pairs or a single composition.

also really love that moose calls to say goodnight & spurge’s IMMEDIATE instinct is ‘you’re fucked up.’ as though moose is a long distance partner who calls him whenever he gets too drunk to slur into the speaker about how much he loves him & then says goodnight five thousand times before dropping his phone on accident

Pope Benedict XIV (Prospero Lambertini, 1675–1758)
Pierre Hubert Subleyras French
1746
"Subleyras was chosen to paint Pope Benedict XIV’s state portrait, but this direct, informal image takes us much closer to the man whom antiquarian and Grand Tourist Horace Walpole described as “a priest without insolence or interest, a prince without favorites.” His slack jawline and five o’clock shadow humanize the most holy sitter in Europe. A supreme colorist, Subleyras was perfectly suited to tackle the limited palette of papal winter garb of an ermine‑lined cape (mozzetta) and hat (camauro). The stole is decorated with the papal keys and family armorial devices."
