I’m going to give a shoutout to Tiana for being such an underrated Disney princess, if not the most underrated. The other day, I was asked which of the (official) Disney princesses was my favourite, I go with Tiana and then I get asked: “Really? Why aren’t you going with Ariel or Belle or someone like that?”
Honestly, this attitude is tiring because Tiana is the best fucking Disney princess we’ve had in years. A lot of the princesses get credit for being “strong” and “empowering” when that’s honestly debatable. Not naming anyone here because I don’t care to hear people defend them but you probably know which ones I’m talking about when I say “White, overrated Disney princess who gets too much attention, both from the company itself and the fans”. I can name at least three princesses who apply to this description.
Tiana is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest because she faces her problems instead of running away from them. She’s hardworking as hell, stubborn in the best way, realistic, ambitious, goal-oriented and resourceful. When being faced with a problem, she deals with it instead of escaping it, as some Disney princesses have a tendency to do. But Tiana worked too fucking hard just do that and she is not giving up, something that I’ve missed since Mulan. On top of that, she’s also kind, helpful, skilled, brave and doesn’t let people step on her, just because they’re more privileged than her (namely Naveen when he’s acting spoiled in the beginning).Â
And even when spending the majority of the film as a frog, she gets shit done! She earns a ton of money she’s saved up for years to build her own restaurant to honour her and her father’s dream and she accomplishes that! She does get help to actually build it from Naveen, of course, but we all know that she’d be able to do it on her own if that was the case.
So here’s to Tiana, the first (and hopefully not last) black Disney princess and one of the greatest princesses of all time! May she get the attention she deserves because she sure isn’t getting enough love <3

“What’s fun about Naveen and different about him relative to past princes is that he’s not a perfect man who shows up at the end of the film and gives the princess a kiss and whisks her away to this kingdom. He has his own issues. He’s running away from expectations that have been placed upon him. He would love to do nothing more than escape into the streets of New Orleans and be a part of the great jazz revolution that was occurring in the 20s.
