Watching Carol interact with the other non-hivemind survivors, it's very interesting to see how most of all of them have family while Carol is alone. And I think that plays into the attitude Carol has vs the others. Even if theyre family members are brainwashed, they all have their support systems technically intact. One of them even says that they actually do want to join the hivemind so they can be with family. Meanwhile Carol lost the only person she had. Does Carol have parents that are alive? Siblings? Close friends? If she does, she doesn't go out of her way to find them or to be with them. And she is insisting on being alone and lashing out at the hivemind when it attempts to reach out to her.

Koumba seems alone as well. And while Carol copes with being alone with alcoholism and pushing people away, Koumba seems to cope by embracing letting the hivemind into his life- enjoying all the meaningless sex and materialism at his fingertips. But at some point, I think, he's going to have to realize as well that that is a poor substitute for genuine connection as well.
