Winning because I didn't have to eat thanksgiving dinner at 3pm
Just finished my annual GtN reread so here’s my take on
Who at Canaan House would willingly make the Lyctor sacrifice
Jod says at the end of GtN that he wanted all the new Lyctors to make the choice willingly, with full knowledge of what it entailed. Based on what we see in GtN canon:
Second House, Judith and Marta: YES. Starting off with a hot take here but GtN!Second are sufficiently empirepilled to take this leap. Would it be a good decision? No. Would Judith spiral about it for centuries? Undoubtedly yes.
Third House, Coronabeth, Ianthe, and Naberius: generally YES. Obviously the twins are down to eat Babs in canon, but assuming the whole thing was laid out for him…we don’t really see him confronted with immediate death, so it’s hard to say how he’d respond. But we do see him overpowered by the twins a lot, so I’m gonna say he gets eaten in every universe. The whole question of Would Ianthe Eat Coronabeth could be its own meta but as of GtN I say no.
Fourth House, Isaac and Jeannemary: MAYBE. Jeanne would argue for it because of Fidelity, they’d both cry a lot, and whether it ends up happening depends on the influences around them at the time. Realistically they’re probably convinced to put it off until they’re older (no one wants to be 13 forever), and then they end up doing it two years later when one of them gets exploded on a battlefield. Either way Isaac is kinda fucked forever, sorry Isaac.
Fifth House, Abigail and Magnus: NO. They mutually agree not to talk about it for a week to figure out their feelings. Magnus feels his feelings; Abigail researches the crap out of the whole process, including detailed interviews with the existing Lyctors. At the end of this week Magnus is like “…I don’t really want to do this” and she’s all “oh no way, I have looked into it and it’s awful” and he goes “that’s what I thought you’d say but thank the EMPEROR.” They live the rest of their lives happily together and every few years he’s like “but think of all the research you could’ve done” and she’s like “we are not discussing this, I only want you inside me some of the time.” Also he probably has a bunch of jokes about it that she doesn’t find funny.
Sixth House, Palamedes and Camilla: canonically NO.
Seventh House, Dulcinea and Protesilaus: NO. Technically speaking neither of them appear (alive) in GtN, but I can’t imagine real!Dulcie being down for a) Family Man Protesilaus Ebdoma sacrificing himself for her, or b) living forever with lung cancer. Even if they didn’t know about b), the whole self-sacrifice thing seems like a no-go for her.
Eighth House, Silas and Colum: MAYBE. When Ianthe is explaining the Lyctorhood process at the end of GtN, Silas declares aloud that he would never do that but Colum seems potentially doubtful? Overall these two are hard to read, but I’m gonna say Colum would be down to be eaten, assuming the whole Honor Dispute in late GtN doesn’t make him quite so outwardly doubtful of Silas.
Ninth House, Harrowhark and Gideon: canonically NO, though Gideon would still offer.
Open to other thoughts, and to potentially revising this once I finish my annual reread of Harrow.
