we're reading pere goriot in my french class; it's set in 1819 paris, so like it features some oldish lifestyle shit

my teacher kind of made fun of the fact that rich people would send each other letters in the same way we'd send texts, like they'd go to all the trouble of sending a sentence or two across the city, which would then get a sentence or two in reply before being sent right back again (and that was only if the person happened to be around to receive the letter that same day)

but idk i think it's more like email or social media; people today dont check their messages all the time, and those with jobs n shit might only check once every few days, just to reply with a single word
