It was late, way past the time we were supposed to go to bed. The TV was on, but neither of us was watching it. Malachi had me pulled into his side on the couch, his arm around me, and he was going on and on about cars.

I had no clue what half the stuff meant—horsepower, torque, mods, whatever—but the way his eyes lit up while he talked made me melt. He moved his hands around as he explained something I didn’t understand at all, his voice full of excitement, like he could go on forever.

And honestly? I didn’t even care about what he was saying. I just loved hearing him talk. I loved how happy he got when he was explaining something he loved.

At some point, his fingers started playing with my hair absentmindedly, twirling little pieces while he kept talking. I swear it made me fall for him even more. My cheek rested on his chest, and I just stared up at him, completely in awe.

He finally noticed and paused mid sentence. “What?” he asked, his cheeks turning pink.

“Nothing,” I said quickly, smiling up at him.

“You’re staring at me,” he pointed out, his grin tugging at the corner of his lips even though he was trying to act cool.

“Can’t I look at my boyfriend?” I teased.

He shook his head, laughing softly as he leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine for a second. “You make me all shy when you do that,” he admitted, cheeks still red.

“Good,” I whispered, grinning.

“Are you even listening to me?” he asked after a beat, raising his eyebrows at me like he already knew the answer.

“Mmhm,” I hummed, not even hiding my smile.

“What did I just say then?”

I giggled, because yeah, I definitely had no idea. “Something about… car stuff?”

He laughed, shaking his head, still twirling my hair between his fingers. “Wow, babe. Really paying attention, huh?”

“I am,” I said softly, cuddling closer to him. “Not to the cars. To you.”

His smile got all soft then, and he leaned down to kiss my forehead. “You’re so cheesy,” he whispered, but I could tell he liked it.
