Fedya was crawling. Trying intently to stand.
He wouldn't stay on the blanket Zhenya had laid out for him. He was determined to explore the area around their tent, marvelling at the tall grass and loud cricket hum. The tall guy ropes strung taut over his head as he crawled. He was filthy — hands, knees, feet all needing a proper, soapy, warm-water wash.
Zhenya was watching him like a hawk. Hovering and fretting. Clutching his pack of babysafe wetwipes like a nervous old woman and—
'Think I'll start cooking in a sec,' Sid said brightly, emerging from the tent. 'You hungry?'
Before Zhenya could respond, Fedya made a loud delighted noise, beaming up at his Mama.
Sid returned his beam and scooped him up energetically.
