Taekook Timeline 2021

At the start of the new year, Tae shares a Taekook selca on his Weverse story. It seems like Taekook are making a statement by opening the year with a selca.

The MC expects them to comment on their experience attending the award ceremony and Tae is quick to draw attention to Jk, probably asking him to speak and making a reference to his golden hair which they kept teasing him about.

As Tae speaks, Jk raises the award up to the older’s face so that it gets captured in the close-up frame, which is something BTS usually do as a way to show-off their achievements and extol the merits of the speaker.

BTS are asked to say a few heartfelt words to the member standing to their right as New Year wishes. As Jk is about to start, Tae teases him about his newly bleached hair. This causes them to laugh before resuming the task at hand. Jk brings back the topic discussed during “In The Soop”, using the occasion to redirect the narrative in a way it accurately portrays main aspects of their current relationship. On the reality show they were very clear on painting it as them building somewhat of a wall over time as a result of the age-related formalities that Jk (once) insisted on using and the dynamics becoming less playful due to Tae being more calm and reserved, each one subtly pointing fingers at the other (this was communicated due to the key words that were directly uttered, with Tk’s chat being intentionally misleading and Jk’s monologue not sounding entirely believable). It’s up to the reader to determine that prior take as completely honest or as a closeting strategy where some lies were inserted, and therefore whether not having any one-on-one serious talks during strikingly hard times due to Tae being difficult to approach and then saying they solved most of their issues during a brief broadcasted chat that didn’t tackle anything they hadn’t discussed before is compatible with being a couple or not. We personally deemed it a facade and this next version would leave that “awkwardness” out and simply focus on the truthful part, although it doesn’t cancel out the alleged “reconnecting period” and the effects of that prior chat stand strongly in the public’s mind so it served its purpose. 

Jk now explains that rather than growing apart, their relationship has changed in nature but they are still close at this moment in time. He says Tae used to be like a same-age friend whom he used to get in trouble with, but nowadays he’s more mature and reliable (like a hyung) - meaning he can trust and depend on him. He then expresses gratefulness at Tae’s hard work as part of the group. Hobi is amused by the scene, pointing out that Jk was actually giving off the aura of being Tae’s hyung - hand firmly massaging Tae’s shoulder as he confidently praised and congratulated him face to face. Jk continues addressing his longing for going on proper trips and adventures together. Tae promises to tag along once the pandemic passes.

January 6-12, 2021: Run 133 is filmed (aired March 16, 2021):

At the start of the episode, the members mention this is the first run filmed in 2021. This causes Jk to reminisce how he came to Seoul 10 years ago, with Tae chimining in he also came a decade ago.

Jin comments he met Jk in June 2011, with Tae following up it was September for him. Jk jokingly tells Tae he’s his junior.

This seems to leave Tae momentarily stunned as he looks to Jk then faces forward -

before leaning out of the group stance to challengingly stare down Jk. Tae stated in Summer Package 2018 that Jk is more of the hyung in their relationship. There have been multiple instances of Tae calling Jk “hyung” over the years, some examples being in Run 27 and Run 118. This is probably another way Jk is joking with Tae about their two-year age difference.

Jk loses the first round (a standard typing game), with his punishment being that he now has to perform the next task on a very large keyboard. The members are shocked by its size. Jimin takes a photo, and the camera shows him preparing his phone while Jk playfully taps away on the keys. Tae decides to take a photo as well and as he prepares his phone the camera cuts away.

Tae playfully bangs on Jk’s keyboard and then looks expectantly at Jk, gauging his reaction.

Jk follows suit and begins copying Tae in their usual copy paste, a slight smirk on his face. Tae happily smiles that Jk has gone along with his antics, watching Jk‘s hand then looking up at him.

It’s not long before Jk chastises Tae though, since it’s causing his keyboard to act up. 

This doesn’t phase Tae, who flashes his trademark boxy smile and laughing acknowledges, hand raised, that he is aware his actions are messing him up.

Joon beats Tae in answering a run question correctly. As the members ask staff for tips on how to search, Tae continues to be ornery to Jk and closes his window out.

Tae answers incorrectly during the above question, so he must wait out 1 minute and 30 seconds before trying again. Jk raises his hand to answer. Tae tries to mollify the usually competitive Jk to not answer so he can have a chance to try again. Jk doesn’t listen.

Tae and Hobi didn’t do as well in the game in comparison to the other members. They were joking to the others about what kind of food they could get with their points, and Jimin offered to share some of his points with Hobi so that he could get something besides pickles. Hobi did some aegyeo in order to make Jimin laugh. Tae also didn’t get many points for food, so he also decided to perform aegyeo towards Jimin.    When he hears JK offer some food to Hobi, he also performs some aegyeo towards JK as well.

Notice how even though Tae didn’t win any points to get food and JK did, the entire tray of food is in front of Tae. Also Jk feeds Tae a bite of his food -

Run episode 134: is a continuation of the 3-part run series 133-135. In the next segment, members have to guess what song + choreography of theirs it is based on the dance instructions. Joon begins gesturing, stating, “we have a song like this! What is it?” This kickstarts Tae beginning to sing a song that sounds suspiciously like the “baby got back” song.

The members laugh, with Jin, Joon and Hobi imitating Tae dancing. Jk takes up singing the song.

It seems like Taekook have a little joke going on, with Jk picking up where Tae leaves off while the members laugh at their aegyo.

Run 135 behind the scenes: members speculate out loud what they should do to kill time while waiting for their turn to hide objects around the building. Tae decides to do some push ups, since he has to wait 25 mins to hide his object. The next cut shows Jk squeezing his muscle to determine his progress. Jk tells Tae he’s getting stronger.

When Jimin returns from hiding his item, the camera cuts to what appears to be Tae and Jk holding hands loosely. We only catch a glimpse before they drop their hands as the camera follows Jimin coming towards them. SS don’t do it justice but Tae’s smile widens.

Mid January - end of January 2021 (released June 15, 2021) Run BTS 142 “the perfect combination” is filmed. 

Jin, Jk and Tae select the cabbage on the table over the green onion, so they form one team (with Joon, Jimin and Hobi forming the other team). 

Baek Jong-won (Mr. Paik) asks what kimchi can be quickly made with cabbage. Jk answers and Tae goes to shake his hand but is left unintentionally hanging as Jk goes to shake Mr. Paik’s hand.

Even though it’s a 3-person team, TK continue to stick close to one another and work as a duo, with lack of space at various times. They even mix the cabbage together, making it a playful moment by announcing to the group it’s like a dance choreography, before starting to dance in sync while tossing the cabbage.

Behind Run 142:

Originally, Hobi is seated next to Tae.

The members hide off camera and come running in when Mr. Paik announces “Run BTS!” All the members head back to their original seats. Jk switches up the seating arrangement, choosing to sit by Tae as they take their seats to begin filming.

Hobi doesn’t seem to expect this shakeup, as he was heading back to his original seat before realizing Jk is now seated there. He does a cute turn around to the opposite side.

Late January - early February 2021: RUN 137 is filmed, the continuation of the variety show game style from RUN 136. There weren’t a lot of interactions between Taekook directly, but there were a few things that the authors wanted to include and/or decided merited archiving. Please keep in mind a lot of pairings had cute moments but as a TK timeline we will only be addressing the tk moments. 

Jin and Hobi win the big prize and staff tells BTS they make play rock, paper, scissors for the remaining prizes. The members start to chime out what the want.

Tae and Joon both want the wine (they originally wanted to name their team beef and wine team). 

Jk wants the pear and bellflower extract - Jimin wants the ramen.

Tae was already in line to play the director after Jin, but when JK comes he lets him go first. He doesn’t have to since everyone was going on a first come first serve basis, and even if it wasn’t a serious competition for prizes by any means (they were all having fun!), it was still a sweet gesture between the two. As they voluntarily switch, Jk briefly places a hand on Tae’s lower back.

In the Behind the Scenes, JK offers the wine to Tae as they are collecting their things and wrapping up the episode. Keep in mind he doesn’t have to do this and none of the members, at least on camera, were trading gifts. 

SPECULATION: the authors believe JK may have picked the wine knowing that Tae wanted it, in case Tae didn’t win his round and couldn’t secure the wine. Jk is quite a considerate person and it isn’t in his nature to be selfish and grab something that someone else wants, so it’s our opinion he was being thoughtful in getting it for Tae to ensure Tae did end up with the item he wanted. 

Some may argue that once Tae secured the red ginseng that Jk made the decision to trade with him to then try to trade Jin for the beef. The authors of this piece believe differently, that Jk was being thoughtful securing the wine for Tae and securing the beef would just be a bonus, but please decide as you like. 

In the final scene, Tae is seen holding the wine while Jk now has the red ginseng Jin had initially wanted.

In the set of notes included as merch for the BE album, the members are asked what color goes best with BE. While most pick more calming colors, like black, blue or gray (Hobi picked green as it’s, according to him, comforting), Jk chooses rainbow. This is similar to Tae mentioning in August 2020 that their hit song “dynamite” reminds him of the colors of the rainbow “for no reason”.

BTS release a BB of the members pairing up to make cards to greet the Chinese New Year, dated on the 12th of February. Tae and Jk are together and open the BB. 

Tae opens their segment by swaying side to side as he introduces himself. Jk listens closely and proceeds to copy him, syncing up and swaying together. They take turns to complete the sentence in a cute way.

BTS go on vlive. Taekook don’t have any significant interactions, but everything seems just fine between them all. This is included due to what we consider to be unfounded concerns that followed it’s broadcast, saying there was a gloomy atmosphere and tension between Tae and Kook. 

When they introduce themselves, “V” uses the alphabet to be witty. Members giggle.

Hobi recalls a funny episode in which Jk had trouble singing a line of the song “Telepathy”. The youngest jogs his memory and determines it was Tae who ended up successfully recording and claiming those lines. He turns to point at him and make eye contact, getting a chuckle in response.

Members - mostly Jimin - tease Tae by giving him various titles only to have him hand them over. They kept the joke rolling after the first misunderstandment, cheerful laughs filling the room.

They proceed to debate, with most of them choosing “5-year-old Jk”, reasoning they miss cute Jungkook. Tae says:

The youngest isn’t too thrilled about it.  He doesn’t like being the centre of this discussion, also trying to interject when Yoongi chose five, hard-working Jungkook’s.

Tae massages his shoulder - a soothing action - but agrees with the majority, which isn’t what he wanted to hear. Jimin follows up to help soothe him, since Jk isn’t thrilled with this topic. 

Jin says:

Tae adds cute Jk is gone:

Tae compensates it by complimenting Jk’s current, manly looks. He didn’t become just a man, but “a real man” according to Tae. He’s implying that both sides of him have their own appeal, even if there’s certain nostalgia about the past - which is natural.

Jk hints at him being bothered by people wanting to preserve his cute image (fans included). For a long time, his specific role in the group required him to come off as a cute, boyish maknae, with staff preventing him from developing noticeable muscles, as stated by him in 2015. “Cuteness” in relation to his public image is a sensitive topic for him since there could be a level of insecurity around it - of being less liked once that cuteness is gone - or simply some frustration since he prefers a manlier image.

Joon takes the hint and immediately asks Jk what he himself prefers. Instead, Tae turns the tables and moves the focus to other members, prompting him to choose.

Jk becomes chirpy again. They are now talking about 5 Jimins being chaotic together, and Jk avoiding work by blaming his other clones - steering away from the previous, sensitive topic.

They remember games from their childhood and attempt to carry them out. Tae shouts “Can you do this?”. Members turn to look at him, with Yoongi, Hobi and Jungkook giving it a try.

Jin repeats his cry with drool being present within the offense, and Jk turns to reiterate that it’s “extract” - backing Tae up.

Yoongi asks Tae why he suddenly laughed, but he denies laughing. Jk softly asks if he choked and Tae confirms.

He then is determined to get Jk to draw him for his birthday, squeezing his shoulder and saying: “Seriously, draw me one”.

Flashback: this reminds us of the time around debut days when Tae marveled over the portrait that Jk drew of him, most probably upon request, despite their busy schedules.

February 28, 2021 (released June 22, 2021): Run 143 is filmed in which BTS are tasked with creating children’s stories. Originally the teams are divided into two groups, three members (Yoongi does not participate due to shoulder surgery). Jin, Hobi and Jk are on one team and Tae, Jimin and Joon are on the other. Tae ends up convincing Hobi to join up, rendering the groups to become three sets, two members each. 

Jin, the writer, and Jungkook, the illustrator, read their story second of the three teams. Tae struggles to view the story and gets up to koala cuddle Jk while listening to the story. He leans on to him for the entirety of Jin’s narration.

Jk goes on his first solo vlive in nearly 2 years! (although he went live on YouTube during 2020, which is basically the same thing). 

Jk reads off comments periodically in his vlive, answering fan questions about himself, such as future goals and aspirations (lowering his body fat even more, reading books to write more lyrics, etc). However, towards the end of his vlive he does choose to read a question that is geared towards another member: Tae. Bangtan had all individually been asked at various points if they’d pick 5 Jk’s or 5-year-old Jk. The questioner took a playful spin on this trend and changed it to Tae. 

Pic below: he sees the comment pass by at 38:40, which is when he pauses chewing and raises his left eyebrow (right one from our perspective; better viewed on video).

Notice how he had to actively scroll up within the chat to read the question he’d gotten a glimpse of, and which had grabbed his attention.

Jk smirks and chuckles lightly as he announces he’d pick 5-year-old Tae. He actually stutters as well.

Jk sports a small, lingering smile after announcing his choice.

He elaborates further on his decision, stating that with 5 Tae’s he would need sunglasses - all the handsomeness would be too bright to stare at directly. 

Jk jokingly acts out being blinded should there be 5 Tae’s.

End of February 2021: Run 138 is filmed. The instructor believes Jungkook will be able to knock the water battle over with the ping pong. Jk is visibly nervous at the pressure. Members are very supportive and Tae attempts to reassure Jk and lessen the pressure on him feeling the need to succeed. timestamp 10:16 

TK were in their own little world, similar to how they’ve been in prior Run episodes, with TK looking at each other’s paddles bedore Jk begins blowing on his paddle and running it vigorously up and down Tae’s back. Tae smiles at his antics.

Behind the scenes of Run 138 - The instructor reminds BTS how to properly wipe down their paddles (blow then wipe). Jk proceeds to do so - While Tae grabs a hold of Jk’s shoulder to better see the instructor -

Run 139 - BTS continue playing table tennis. Initially, Jk is seated by Hobi, so Tae and Jin make their way to the empty seats. In the next cut, Jk and Jin are switching seats, with Jk now sitting by Tae. The far away shot is harder to see but in the first pic Jk is seated next to Hobi, while Tae and Jin are standing (see close up further below for better viewing).

Note- it is possible that the reason JK and Jin switched was because all the competitors were sitting with each other (Namjoon and Jimin, and Hobi and Jin). Please decide as you like.

BTS share with USA Today how they feel as first-time Grammy nominees and performers. The interviewer, Fatima, asks at the end if they have any closing comments for ARMY. Joon takes the opportunity to give the closing ment and while he does so, Tae, Jk, Jin and Hobi show finger hearts to the camera in appreciation of ARMY.

Jk glances down at Tae’s cute antics and changes the target of his finger hearts, from the camera to Tae.

He presses the hearts into Tae’s fluffy hair.

At the start of the video (above photos), Tae is seen mouthing “Imma leave the door open”, though the viewer can’t hear it since LGO plays at the start. This is the song “leave the door open” by Bruno Mars, et al., that Taekook have sung before.

After the talk show segment, the members are filmed sitting at a circular table. The first round is “the truth we didn’t share”. All members have written cards and placed them in envelopes for one to read aloud. The idea is to get the receiving member to say something the writer has been wanting to hear (for instance, Joon chose to be playful and requests Jin say he’s handsome, while Jin took a more serious approach and asked Yoongi to tell him he has a song ready for him). BTS spin the table, having the envelope stop at the person who the writer wishes to speak the words aloud. When it’s Jungkook’s turn, he has the envelope stop at Tae, which surprises everyone. Tae looks up inquisitively.

He then looks towards Jk, a questioning and surprised look lingering on his face.

Tae then smiles and asks for confirmation the envelope is really for him, still surprised.

Everyone bursts into laughter, with Tae putting his head down in mock defeat at falling for the prank, before passing the envelope on.

Tae still sports a cheeky expression while he teasingly reminds Jk he was the messenger earlier (exacting his revenge).

Jk laughingly takes up the envelope and happily passes it along.

Filmed at the end of March - start of April 2021 (released June 4, 2021): BTS are Bangrim’s Photo Studio to shoot “BTS 4 Cuts”. Each member draws a storyboard and then they will copy the poses in the shoot. Taekook are together as they draw out their individual storyboards. 

When reviewing the story board, Tae leans over and asks “what do I always tell you?” This could reference a variety of things but the phrasing could indicate a familiar discussion/joke/moment between the two of them.

He playfully pats him.

There is a cut and in the next scene, Jk lowers his voice and asks Tae if he wants to see originality, causing Tae to chuckle.

Jk does listen to Tae and teasingly asks if his new storyboard is satisfactory.

Tae praises it, which makes Jk to laugh.
