Kawaii stuff was something I had to seek out and exert a lot of effort to obtain in the 00s. I was a regular on a kawaii pixel art BBS, had my own (bad) kawaii sozai website, tried to replicate Japanese stationary I saw online with homemade stamps/screenprints, and took train rides all around my area to look for and buy imported kawaii tat. It’s so nice seeing it everywhere now.

Maybe this is a regional thing, but it’s mostly kids and their grandparents sporting niche San-X stuff. It’s delightful seeing an old guy take out his keyring with a Gudetama on it.
