Hey here is your friendly reminder to not tell your nice boss stuff.
Iām at the executive management level for my very small company and I have 4 people who report directly to me. I am a nice boss. Iām friendly with my employees, I treat them like professional adults, I actively try to create a positive work environment, and I mentor them and make sure theyāre advancing in their careers. I do my best to shield them from the rest of management doing stupid shit. My employees like working for me.
The other day one of my employees came to ask if she could change her hours on Mondays. I said yes immediately because itās helpful for me to know when sheās here and when sheās not, but as long as she gets her work done I donāt care when and where she does it. She then proceeded to tell me that it was so she could attend therapy and like ⦠I will never use this information but ⦠as a general rule donāt fucking do that.
Do not tell your employer shit about your mental or physical health except for the bare minimum needed to request a reasonable accommodation. Even your nice boss can fire you, even your nice boss can unfairly change your working conditions, and even your nice boss at some point is probably going to face pressure from their superiors.
Iām not saying donāt trust your boss with anything ever. Iām just saying that anytime you are in the workplace you need to keep your private information private. You can still have a good relationship with your boss. Your workplace can still be pleasant. But if it ever feels like disclosing private information is required in order to have a good relationship with your boss, please see that as a red flag.
This post got a like out of nowhere and I only vaguely remember writing it and Iām not entirely sure which of my employees inspired it, but it still holds.
I just remembered that this was a thing that was HILARIOUS in 2006 and apparently that was ten years ago now.
Old people: join with me in remembering how funny we found this on LiveJournal.
Young people: look at this lolrus, itās so happy, it has a bucket.
And then they stealed away the bucket and we realised we had fucked up a perfectly good elephant seal and given it anxiety.
listen this vintage meme is high quality and i will hear nothing said against it
20 years. I am not happy about this.
Iām delighted at the bucket reappearing but dismayed at the passage of time
Happy 20 years to Lolrus and his bucket!
Reblog to save a duck
Quack quack
Itās getting to be that time of year where more people are going outside to parks and stuff so i thought it would a good idea to reblog this again
Once I was feeding some ducks from a bag of birdseed I brought with me, and this woman next to me looked so confused and asked what I was feeding them
When I said it was birdseed she just went āoh- can they actually eat that? Is that safe?ā
I didnt know how to respond like, at all, so I just pointed at the duck and said ābirdā
She then had a look on her face like a new groove was just forcibly carved in her brain and said softly āoh my fucking godā
embracing the patterned ambiguity of gender and sex as more or less social constructs can grant you so much more precision in thinking about so many concepts in science.
like, if there was a study (and I'm just making this up as an example) showing women suffer from mosquito bites more than men do
you could do the ~"Gender Critical"~ thing and go "see!? mosquitoes get it!!"
OR
you could go "that's interesting" and start asking more questions, like:
is this data self-reported? controlled?
were they studying the women or the mosquitoes?
did the study use methods that would let you tell the difference between "being bitten more often" and "noticing bites more often"?
did the study include any trans people and were their results any different? if yes were they on HRT or not?
how similar were the men and women in aspects other than gender? do we know their social class, jobs, diets, blood types?
because in fact the study i made up just then could lead to a huge variety of conclusions. from my description above you can't tell the difference between studies that show:
mosquitoes are attracted to people with higher estrogen levels
mosquitoes are opportunistic and women spend more time near mosquito habitats for sociocultural reasons
every gender gets bitten about the same amount but men are socialised to pay less attention to physical discomfort so more of them don't notice minor bites compared to women (and by more we mean like 60-40, this is a bell curve thing)
we accidentally got heaps of women in the study that have the mosquito's favourite blood type and not so for the men, oops
mosquitoes are attracted to people with more x and y in their diets, which is currently mostly women for, again, largely sociocultural reasons
etc etc etc
you're just not going to understand actual Gender Science, and therefore reality, if you can't put "hmm, but what do they mean by woman this time" in your mental toolkit in a relatively neutral way.
Yop. I am constantly nudging the graduate students in my current lab, where both sex differences and sex disparities in diagnosis of autism and ADHD are topics of interest, to think about this.

feminism never taught me to hate men but it did help me realize that i shouldnāt prioritize them over women & it turns out that alot of men consider that to be hatred lmao.

The āIām Just a Girlā to Household Voting Pipeline
So Iām not one for conspiracy theories (because letās be real, it gets racist really fast when you fall down an online rabbit hole), but let me just pop on my tinfoil hat for a second.
Because my personal theory (and I will die on this hill) is that the āIām just a girl / girl maths / men think about the Roman Empireā discourse on social media (even when it was tongue-in-cheek) helped prime the ground for the conversation that is now starting to bubble up on the American right around household voting and womenās independent political power. And because American culture-war politics rarely stays in America, this is probably going to ripple out around the world via the populist satellites of MAGA (looking at you Reform).
Because even ironic discourse can still help normalise an idea. And the idea being normalised was that women are not really serious adults: that we are too frivolous to grapple with intellectual complexity such as Diocletianās tetrarchy (that every man apparently has on his mind 24/7 despite one of the best classicists living being the GOAT Professor Mary Beard), too silly to be trusted with money, or too helpless to perform basic adult tasks.
Then the ādivine feminineā, āfeminine energyā, and āsprinkle sprinkleā dating discourse adds to this, because even when it is supposedly framed as female empowerment (or as a critique of men being the source of all evil in the world- because womenās pretty little heads arenāt capable of malice) , it often ends up circling back to the same idea: that women are not really meant to stand fully on their own two feet.
That is also where tradwife content fits in, because it takes that same underlying premise and turns it into a lifestyle. If āgirl mathsā makes women being bad with money funny, and āsprinkle sprinkleā makes dependence on a man sound like strategy, then tradwife content sells full financial dependence as aspiration (almost a solution to the girl maths and an end point for the sprinkle).
Because although this content is all coming from different parts of BeyoncĆ©ās internet, it has the same common thread running underneath it. And this is how a cultural milieu gets created: different strands of culture keep repeating the same premise until it starts to feel like common sense in the Gramscian sense (not common sense as in the Chanel from the back of some guy called Daveās van is probably fake, but common sense as in the assumptions a society absorbs so thoroughly that they stop looking political).
And that is also why the gender essentialism of the current culture wars matters here, because the argument is not only that women are bad with money but that biology creates fixed social roles and that stepping outside those roles is a threat to the social order (which is why the attacks on womenās autonomy and the attacks on trans people are not separate moral panics so much as different fronts of the same project). Once you have spent years insisting that cis men and women have natural social and domestic functions, it becomes much easier to make individual rights look like a dangerous modern excess rather than the basic condition of being a free adult.
So when people then start soft-launching taking away the vote from women (and later, anyone who is not a rich, cis white man), the cultural groundwork has already been laid. Women have already been rhetorically softened into dependants.
great work everyone hit the bathhouse

This is a spot from an italian estate agency (we are governed by the right-wing party)
The woman says "Ridiculous..."
If you want to spread it elsewhere, here's the official link
[Video Description: An ad with piano music over it all, showing an elderly woman in her home, knitting, when two younger men walk by her window, which catches her attention. She stares out her window at them as they kiss each other while walking, the old lady staring in disbelief. Cut to the old woman approaching a residence with a broom in hand, staring up at the second floor window where a small rainbow Pride flag is hanging. The old woman stares up at it and mutters "Ridiculo", before getting up on a ladder with her broom to remove the flag. Focus on the flag fluttering to the ground as church bells chime. The scene then cuts to the couple from before, approaching their home with grocery bags in hand before one stops and stares at the second floor, stopping his partner who then drops the groceries as he too stares up. It's then revealed that the small pride flag had been replaced with a gigantic, hand-knit pride flag. It then cuts back to the old woman's home, where a tin of rainbow-colored yarn sits on her table. The hands of the old woman are holding and fondly touching an old black and white photo of two young smiling women, leaning against each other. Cut to the old woman's face as she stares out with a look of happy pride on her face. At the end of the video, the name "Idealista" appears on screen, followed by "buon pride" along with a rainbow. End VD.]
One correction:
The old lady is not in her home. She is at work. She's meant to be what in Italian is called "la portinaia", aka a cross between a doorwoman and cleaner of a residential building. She's in her small "office" space, at the entrance of the building, from where she can survey the coming and goings of the inhabitants. It's a job that has mostly disappeared, but is culturally very clear to us as having the connotation of "potentially gossipy, one-million-percent judgmental woman who sees everything that goes on in the apartment complex, knows everyone and their secrets, and has Strong Opinionsā¢ļø".
In this case, thankfully, the Strong Opinionā¢ļø is that those two men are ridiculous with their teeny tiny flag for ants.
I really like emo music in concept because there's a lot of meaning to just up-front expressing one's deep, painful emotions; I just wish fewer people's deep emotions were about just breaking up with someone
musician: I FEEL LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT ME IS WRONG, I HAVE TO CUT MYSELF OPEN TO FEEL ANYTHING
me: this is personal and powerful
musician: BECAUSE SHE LEFT ME
me: shut up
