SLEEP WAS EVADING YOU. this wasnโt the first night that you laid there, tossing and turning. your eyes met the ceiling, begging yourself to sleep. was it how quiet it was? maybe. you werenโt used to the quiet, not with how used to you were to loud noises and explosions. that was war.
you saw the beginnings of light peak under your door, and you ran your hands down your face. you and the ghost crew found a home on lothal, especially since the war since ended.
it didnโt mean that the nightmares didnโt stop. it didnโt mean that life all of a sudden got easier.
you rolled off of your cot, your back aching as you settled your feet onto the hard flooring of your room. it wasnโt much, but it was better than nothing. you slipped into something more presentable, stretching your aching limbs as you did so. you needed caf, desperately.
you walked out of your room, the light of the hallway blinding you as you made your way down the hallway of the building you called home. the other members of the ghost crew resided there, as well as some other ex-rebellion fighters.
โgood morning!โ a too-happy chirp came from ezra, who peaked out of his room. he noticed the bags under your eyes, the lack of energy you had. youโd looked like that for the past few days. yesterday you were hyped up, and today you were obviously not.
โnot in the mood, ezra,โ you grumbled as you walked into the kitchen, grabbed the pot of freshly made caf and a mug.
โsorry,โ he shrugged as he followed you into the kitchen, watching as you drank the caf straight, without anything in it, โsince when do you drink straight caf?โ
โsince i canโt seem to get some sleep,โ you gave a tight-lipped smile as you took a sip. ezra looked at you, surprised. he didnโt know how he didnโt see it earlier.
โwhy arenโt you sleeping?โ
โi think itโs too quiet,โ you admitted, leaning against the counter. it was just the two of you in there, the coolness of the room biting at your skin.
โbeing in a war your whole life makes you forget how nice the quiet is,โ he agreed. he knew what it was like, sleeping after the war. he didnโt get much of it until he got used to it. his heart hurt upon the realization that you were having a hard time adjusting.

the jedi never fell to the hand of the chancellor, instead, he ran, escaping to a far-off planet to build his empire. he took you with him since you swore allegiance that day to the monster behind the curtain. as powerful and full as you felt, there was a void in your soul. before you accepted the dark side, you and anakin skywalker were friends. you trained together and completed campaigns together. except he was the chosen one, the one who was believed to destroy the sith. he was kind, and fearless, but had a gentle touch. you loved him, and it brought about your downfall.
youโve had many encounters with your old friend since that day. lightsaber duels, harsh words, even barely missing each other whenever you were both on the same planet.

โi wasnโt the one who fell,โ he seethed, using all of his strength to stay upright. he wouldnโt deny it; youโd gotten stronger. your hands wrung your saber as you bore down on him, your pain and your hatred a driving force for your duel. he hated to see it, he hated how much pain you were in and he didnโt even know it. you were right, though, anakin was tempted by the pleasures of the dark side, but he didnโt fall into them. you did, and his heart broke for you.
your sabers separated again, and you engaged in more of a duel. the loud crashing of sabers filled your head, pushing you forward. your steps were deliberate, filled with menace and malice. his were light, intent, and defensive in every step he took. your expression was wrung into anger and confusion, pain swimming in your eyes. memories flooded your mind as you swung at anakin, anger making your moves sloppy and predictable.
anakin swung, his saber crashing down on top of yours. you stumbled, losing your footing. you wouldnโt be seen as weak, you couldnโt. you pushed back, arms straining as you fought. you gritted your teeth, hissing through them as anakinโs strength prevailed.
โi donโt want to hurt you, y/n,โ his voice came through like a whispering wind, warm and comforting. it was supposed to be inviting, and for a time it was, but times changed. you had changed.
โi donโt believe you,โ you seethed. anakin bared his teeth, pushing you down. he wished he had the power to change fate, but he didnโt. no one did. your footing slipped, and you cast a glance down. fighting on the edge of a cliff wasnโt the best idea, especially when the depths below were welcoming you, beckoning you closer.
you answered that call once before.
you managed to gain your footing, only in time for anakin to crash his saber against yours, sending you backwards. the wind whipped around you, and with a final pull, you used the force to bring anakin with you. if you were going down, he was too. your heart was thudding in your ears, fear taking over your body. you watched as anakin fell, his expression laced with fear. he looked like a boy, someone who was vulnerable and needed to be cared for. in that moment, which you believed were your final moments, you caught a glimpse of what could have been. if you hadnโt fallen to the dark side, if you hadnโt fallen for the emperorโs tricks.
reality slammed into your chest, literally. your back slammed against the ground, knocking the wind out of you. as you choked on air, clawing at the air around you, you watched anakin hit the ground too. as breath filled your lungs again with a dramatic gasp, you gathered what little strength you had to sit up and look around. the night sky was littered with stars and two moons hung. a glow was cast on the beach, a whisper riding the wind across the sand. this was different. where were you?
โanakin?โ you called out, panic rising in your tone. a very familiar tone, anakin would say. he looked around, the pain in his back spreading. he heard your voice, your tone flashing him back to a time where things were simpler. you were you, not contaminated by the dark side.
โiโm alive, thanks,โ he stated, rolling onto his side. as he sat up, he watched you. he should be bitter, knowing your intent. you tried to kill him, taking him down with you.
you sat there in silence, your body relaxing into the sand. your eyes were cast out to the waters, watching as the glow of the moons rode the waves. it was mesmerizing and soothing, like ointment on a burn.
โwhy?โ anakin asked you, bringing his eyes to look at you. your physical appearance changed, looking stronger and more menacing. your eyes werenโt the same beautiful color as they were before, instead an angry red color.
his question would haunt you for the rest of your life. you had your reasons and you thought they were good reasons.
โi had my reasons,โ you stated plainly.
โwhat reasons? what was so important that you had to give up on the jedi and join him?โ anakin argued, facing you now. he still sat away from you, making sure space was between you in case you got up and tried to kill him. again. he stunned you with his line of questioning; he made a valid point.
โi was powerless, anakin. my master died, and no one wanted to take up my training. so, i never finished it. no one believed i could do it, and i saw so many people die. my family was slaughtered, my friends, i couldnโt watch it anymore,โ you started, the memories pooling to the surface, โhe offered me a way to cope, and it sounded better than what i was getting,โ you added softly.
anakin knew about the death of your master. it was a brutal death, he knew that. you never told him the details, explaining that โit was not a jediโs role to dwell on the past.โ
โwhat happened?โ he asked you, scooting a little closer to you. so, you told him. you told him about grievous capturing you, about watching your master die in front of you, and about how you did absolutely nothing to help. it wasnโt like you could anyways; you were bound in chains.
anakin sat there, stunned. heโd heard the story, but he didnโt know you were the padawan left behind. he didnโt know that you dealt with the pain and guilt by yourself. he turned away from your eyes, looking down at the sand. he always hated sand, how it got everywhere, but it wasnโt the most important thing right now. he turned back to look at you, meeting your eyes. they werenโt an angry red color anymore, they were the beautiful hue they were before the dark side poisoned you. you were you again, at least getting there.
โiโm so sorry,โ he whispered. he was right next to you now, and you could feel his body heat radiating off of him. he was warm, he always was. you sighed, letting your shoulders sag. the anger behind that day drove you for so long, the guilt ate you alive. you were tired, and whatever planet you were on was making you see that.
โiโve let the guilt eat at me for too long,โ you admitted. anakin watched with hope in his eyes, begging you to come home.
โwe didnโt help,โ he confessed. if heโd known, heโd try to. others did know, the council, his master, they all knew but didnโt help. he tried not to let his own anger kindle.
โno, but i didnโt say anything either,โ you agreed. silence sat between you, the feeling of wanting more sitting in both of your chests. you wanted to go back, but would they take you? anakin wanted you to come home, but would you take his hand?
after a while, anakin stood up. he offered you his hand. you flicked your eyes from his hand to his eyes, seeing the kindness and warmth in them, traits that made you fall in love with him at the temple. you took his hand, and he helped you stand up.
โwater looks nice,โ he commented. you raised an eyebrow at him.
โwhat does that-โ you were cut off by anakin running full speed at the ocean, you in tow. youโd be laughing if there wasnโt one small thing: you never learned how to swim. yes, they had swimming lessons at the temple and they were a part of your training, but itโs been a while and you didnโt do that well, to begin with.
โanakin, wait-โ you called as the water hit your body. it was cold, washing over you and opening up your senses. it enveloped you, thrashing you around. fear rose in your chest as you were cast underwater, panic sitting in your stomach as air failed to reach your lungs. this was natureโs revenge, wasnโt it? youโve committed atrocities for so long nature wanted to get even. you didnโt blame her, you werenโt the kindest to mother nature.
a hand grabbed the collar of your shirt and pulled you above the water. panic rose in anakinโs face as he watched you inhale, gasping for air. your hands softly closed around your throat, tears brimming your eyes as you tasted the sweet flavor of oxygen.
โi thought you could swim!โ anakin said, pulling you both to shallower water.
โi never said that,โ you snapped back, now freezing. your arms wrapped around yourself as you stood in thigh-deep water, watching as anakin recovered. he thought he lost you, for real too. he ran a hand through his wet curls, nodding as he came to a decision.

after a while of practicing, you were finally able to swim on your own. as embarrassing as it felt, you didnโt feel judged by anakin. heโd tease you here and there, but it was normal.

โyouโre lying,โ he gently pointed out, watching your expression change. you didnโt want to talk about your feelings, especially since it would be more sobbing than talking. youโve shoved your emotions down for so long for survival purposes, and you didnโt want to open that can of worms.
โmaybe i am,โ you respond, your eyes still angled towards the sunset.
โyou need to talk about it,โ he told you. he was sincere, genuine in his desire to help you. you, however, didnโt want to be helped.
โiโm fine, hunter,โ you reiterated. with every nudge to talk, to tell him what you were feeling, irritation built in your gut. you knew that he could sense your unease, and you also knew that he wanted to help you feel better. he didnโt deserve the attitude that was brewing.
โy/n, youโre not, and stop saying you are,โ he was growing irritated because he knew that the longer you bottled it up, the more explosive youโd be. he also just wanted you to be ok. he hated watching you battle your past silently.
โwhy? why do you care so much about how i feel?โ you snapped, your posture illustrating just how tense you were. you were tied up and tense, and just one wrong word would set you off.
โbecause itโs affecting your health, y/n! itโs taking a toll on your body and all of us can see that,โ he didnโt want to fight, he didnโt want to argue with you. he didnโt want any of this but he was too caught up in the moment, and he didnโt want the moment where heโd shut down to come any faster.
โi donโt need you to try and make me feel better! i can do it by myself,โ you snapped, standing up and stepping away from him. your anger was coiling around your lungs, transforming into something stronger: grief.
โyouโre not supposed to,โ hunter watched as you turned away from him. his senses were in overdrive, and he wasnโt sure how much more of his own emotions heโd be able to regulate, but he wanted to help you.
โyou have no idea what itโs like to watch your life fall all around you. to be hunted down by the thing you once called your best friend. to reach out into the force to find some semblance of comfort and instead youโre met with emptiness. you have no idea how it feels to lose everyone you love in the span of a few hours,โ your voice started out raised, almost yelling at hunter, but the more you processed the words you were saying, the softer your voice got. grief laid between your heart and your lungs, suffocating you as you struggled to keep it together.
silence crept between you, inflating and creating an uncomfortable tension. youโve never talked about order 66, only to say it was horrific and you didnโt want to look back. hunter stepped forwards as you hugged yourself, tears spilling from your eyes. you were supposed to have control over your emotions, to regulate them in order to have clear judgement. you werenโt taught how to grieve.
โy/nโฆโ hunterโs voice was a whisper. he stepped towards you, laying a gentle hand on your shoulder. hunter knew loss, he knew fear, but he didnโt know the loss you felt. heโs never seen you break in such a fragile way.
โi miss them, hunter. iโm so alone,โ you sniffle as you try to regain some composure. hunter shook his head as he fought through his own body, which screamed at him to step away, to wait. he took you into his arms, cradling the back of your head with one of his hands. he felt every emotion that was pouring out of you. he felt your grief, your anger, and your guilt.
โyouโre not as alone as you think,โ he hummed as he swayed you gently, trying to be the force that brings you some semblance of comfort after all this time.

โiโve seen worse,โ anakin challenged, shifting once more. his shifting wasnโt because of the pain, though that was part of it, it was also because he was half naked sitting in front of you.
โanakin, the entirety of the republic knows you have. they also know how terrible of a patient you are,โ you bit back, using his stilled body to lightly press a bacta bandage over one of his larger cuts.
โwhat? i am not a terrible patient,โ he insisted as he tensed at the bacta patch. you raised an eyebrow as he stiffened again.
โyouโre proving them right with all of this squirming,โ you huffed. you and anakin grew up together, trained together, even fought some campaigns together. you two were close, and this wasnโt the first time youโve seen him shirtless. you didnโt know why he was squirming.
โwhatever,โ he huffed. his skin prickled with every touch of ointment and cold press of the cloth. you took thoughtful care of him, and he enjoyed watching you concentrate on his wounds. he didnโt know what was with him today. he usually sat pretty still, but he knew that he was talkative and stubborn. kix knew that firsthand.
something else stirred in anakin that day, though. the two of you just got back from fighting a campaign together on an outer rim planet, and thatโs almost routine for you both. something else happened, though. something clicked as he watched you tend to your men and cut down droids. something clicked as he observed your exhausted expression, but still seeing the glow behind your eyes.
he was in love.
โyouโve gone uncharacteristically quiet,โ you chirped as you continued patching him up. he exhaled as he looked down to survey your work. your touch still left fleeting tingles down his skin, more confirmation to the realization he had earlier.
"maybe because you're doing an awful job," he covered up his infatuation by insulting you. you shot him a look, eyebrow raised.
โyou wanna do it yourself, flyboy?โ you challenged him, the nickname leaving your tongue fluidly. while initially the nickname annoyed him, he grew to appreciate it. but only you could call him that.
โnope,โ he happily answered, a boyish grin adorning his face. he watched as you rolled your eyes, your fingers carefully applying bacta pads to wounds and to bruises. you stayed concentrated, didnโt even budge when a piece of hair fell in front of your face.
he didnโt even think when he reached out and tucked that piece of hair behind your ear.
you flicked your eyes up to his, gazing into his beautiful blue eyes. anakin was always attractive, youโd always joke that he got too much attention, but he had yours now. his hand didnโt leave your face, instead his hand caressed your cheek. his fingers were calloused and rough, as you knew them to be, but against your skin they still sent shivers crawling down your spine.

โcan i help you?โ you whispered, daring to break the silence. you didnโt move away from the warmth of his hand, but at the same time you were trying to restore some of the normalcy you had earlier.
โcan you?โ he asked in return, his eyes flicking to your lips. anakinโs always found you to be attractive, but in more ways than physical. you were gentle, but also a cunning warrior. you were intelligent, but still gave him a good laugh over inappropriate topics. you were kind, but still gave him a hard time when he definitely deserved it.
you straightened your back, but didnโt go anywhere. with a new boldness about you, you leaned forwards and captured his lips with yours. there was no thinking on his end, he immediately kissed you back. it was soft and gentle, your lips fitting together like two puzzle pieces. your heart swelled as you felt his hand cup your neck, bringing you closer. you broke the kiss to get comfortable, which for you meant situating yourself on his lap. you met his lips again, your arms loosely hanging around his neck. his hands moved down to your hips, holding you there.
he didnโt want this moment to end. the feelings of bliss, of finally finding the one thing heโs been looking for this whole time: you. you were his missing piece, his calm in the fire, his lighthouse in the storm. you were his rock, and he was utterly in love with you.
you broke the kiss, resting your forehead against his, playing with the curls at the nape of his neck.
โhow long were you waiting to do that?โ you teased him, earning a scoff and him pulling his head away.
โbold of you to assume i was waiting,โ he chuckled as he looked at you, admiring you for another moment.

Your heart thunders in your ears as you race down the alley, already leaping for the chain link fence that blocks off the end of it, fingers digging into the metal to pull yourself up and over. Heavy footfalls slap the pavement behind you, and you tuck and roll as the duracrete on the other side of the fence breaks your fall. You slam into a trash bin, skinning your knees and bruising your shoulders. Youโre already pushing yourself to your feet when you see a switch just to the left of the fence.ย

You scramble over to it, slapping on the power, and you hear the electricity in the links hum to life, making them glow and effectively cutting off your pursuers. A red light comes on at the top of the fence, warning anyone around that itโs electrified now, and that they should only touch the fence at their own peril. You kick a half-eaten fruit that had tumbled from the trash bin at it, and it sizzles satisfyingly when it makes contact with the fence. You grin as the familiar voice of a Coruscant Guard echoes down the alley from the direction you came from.
โSTOP!โย
Three Corries skid to a halt on the opposite side of the fence.ย
โI think sheโs activated it sir,โ one of the troopers states.ย
Heโs new.
โOh, are you sure, Brick? Was the big fucking red light your first clue?โ snarls the commander sarcastically, the telltale wings on his helmet glinting in the glow of the fence.ย
You extend your middle finger haughtily as you back away from the fence. โEat shit, Thorn!โ You canโt help but grin to yourself as you round the corner. You hear him swear through his vocoder as you trot out of view.ย
The bracelet that youโve swiped off of one of the senators jingles in your pocket as you pull out the credit pouch you snatched off of her husband and begin tallying your score. Youโre so absorbed in counting your credits that you donโt even notice the wall of red and white plastoid standing in front of you until you slam face-first into it. You fall backwards onto your ass, the credits bouncing across the pavement with a light tinkling noise as you stare up into the familiar visor of Commander Fox. His arms are crossed over his chest.ย
He sighs, muttering your name under his breath. You grin.ย
โFancy meeting you here, Commander,โ you tease.ย
โNot as fancy as that jewelry poking out of your pocket,โ he growls.ย
โOh this? I just picked this up for my uhhh grandmother. Itโs her birthday tomorrow, and you know, she just loves her jewels," you lie, shoving the bracelet back in your pocket. He doesnโt move as he watches you clumsily try to scoop some of the credits back into the pouch.
โAm I to assume that credit pouch is for your grandmother also?โ
โYup. You know. In case she wants to get something else if the bracelet isnโt her style.โ
โHow nice of you to get it monogrammed for her with Senator Siilโs husbandโs initials,โ he says flatly.ย
You wince as you finally note the flowery Aurebesh branded into the leather. โGrandmaโs a uhโฆ big fan of his work. As a senator's husband.โย
Fox leans down and offers you a hand, which you take. Like an idiot. He pulls you up before spinning you and pushing you against the wall, slapping a pair of binders on you. You tug at the restraints behind your back, shooting a glare over your shoulder.
โOh, come on, Fox!โย
He spins you around. โWhat did you think was going to happen? That I was going to pat you on the ass and let you wander off to shake more people down?โย
You shrug, tongue poking between your teeth. โI mean, if you want to pat my ass, I wouldnโt be that opposed.โย
You canโt see his eyes, but you can practically hear them rolling in their sockets beneath his bucket.ย
โYouโre unbelievable.โ
โAnd you find it endearing.โย
He scoffs. โNot the word Iโd choose.โ His hand clamps around your forearm as he starts to guide you out of the winding network of alleys. You walk slowly, dragging your last moments of freedom out. Youโve always enjoyed your chats with Fox on the way back to the station anyway, at least before he books you on a petty crime and sends you to lockup for a week or two. Youโre pretty sure he likes your interactions too, as much as heโll deny it. But he isnโt rough with you, and he's not making any effort to rush your pace. Thatโs all just you speculating though; his bucket does a good job of hiding what heโs actually thinking, which you suspect is the point.
You walk in silence for a few minutes, and you feel his grip on your arm loosen slightly. He knows you wonโt run; you know when youโre caught.ย
โSo, Thornโs gotten slower,โ you note casually.ย
He huffs what you think might be a laugh. Hard to tell with the way the helmet's vocoder alters his voice.ย
โIโm serious," you insist. "Maybe tell him to lay off the beer and work more cardio into his routine.โย
โIโll be sure to pass your feedback along.โ
โWas that a joke, Commander?โ
โBeen trying them out every now and then.โย
You canโt help but snicker at that.
The silence resumes for a few more minutes, but this time, heโs the one to break it.ย
โWhy do you always come here to pickpocket? You know weโre all over the place with all of the rich assholes walking around. The marks may be high-reward, but you can find plenty of Coruscantโs most wealthy in the lower levels, sleazing it up with less savory types. You'd probably have a better shot at getting away too.โย
โThanks for the tip,โ you snipe. โIโll be sure to keep it in mind for my future criminal endeavors.โย
His grip on your arm tightens enough to stop you. โIโm serious,โ he says, the exasperation in his voice clear. He shakes his head before raising his visor to look at you. โLook, things are starting to get a little more harsh up here. With the level of petty crime increasing as the war goes on and who it's impacting the most, thereโs a push to start doling out harsher punishments. Youโre going to land yourself more than a week in lock-up if you keep adding to your record. Iโm talking years in prison.โย
You wish you could see under his helmet right now. Youโre studying his visor carefully, looking for any sign as to whatโs led to this concern for your well-being.ย
โI like it up here,โ you reply.ย
โWhy?โย
You shrug, trying to hide the heat in your cheeks. โI donโt know. Maybe I hope Iโll get to see more of a certain commander when he arrests me.โย
โThorn hates you, just so you know.โ
โIโm not talking aboutโโ
โI know. That was another joke.โย
You stare at him blankly for a moment before you burst out laughing loudly. You could swear some of the tension leaves Foxโs shoulders as he watches you, his helmet tilting to one side.ย
โThatโs good. Youโre getting good, Fox.โย
He nods, and you think he might be a little proud. His fingers flex nervously at his sides. โYou said it was Thorn that lost you?โ
โYeah him and a couple of shinies. Why?โ
You can see Fox considering something, something that makes him nervous, something wildly out of character for him. He reaches forward, spinning you to face away from him, and you feel the binders click loose. You bring your hands to your front, rubbing your wrists as you whirl to face the commander of the Coruscant Guard, whoโs tucking his binders back on his belt.ย
โWhat the fuck are you doing?โ you ask, completely gobsmacked.ย
He shrugs. โThorn cheated at sabacc last week and still wonโt own up to it. I like the idea of being able to hold this over his head and give him shit about it.โย
โWonโt you get in trouble?โ
โOnly if you keep standing here talking to me.โย
You grin, stepping forward and standing on tiptoe so that you can boldly place a kiss on his bucket. You pat the side of it as though it were his cheek. โThanks, Fox.โย
His hand catches yours as you step away. โIf you really want to see more of me,โ he says quietly, โjust come to the 79s and ask me on a date. Less paperwork and binders involved that way.โย
"But what if I like the binders?"
"I save those for at least the second date," he deadpans.
Heat flushes across your face at his offer. You poke a finger into his chest plate, trying to recover your footing with him. โFine, but youโre buying.โย
He tosses you the credit pouch, which you clumsily catch. โNope. The Senatorโs husband is. But Iโd get rid of that monogrammed pouch.โย
You playfully salute him. โYes, sir.โย
He nods again before turning on his heel, disappearing into Coruscantโs fading light.ย

Howzer leaned against the door frame. His arms were folded nonchalantly and his left leg crossed over his right casually. He, to anyone else, would have worn a blank expression, just staring at a wall. But his expression wasnโt blank, although slight, and he was not staring at a wall.
He wasnโt staring at all.
Instead, he was watching you. Thinking. Hoping, in some ways, that you would notice him to put him out of his misery of internal bickering: does he alert you to his presence? Of course, he should. Thatโs polite. But does he clear his throat? Does he speak? Does he approach quietly? With you so busy with the analysis of fauna and robolotomy tasks, it would be rude to interrupt. Unlike his brothers, who were always aware, he wasnโt sure how aware you were. He didnโt want to scare youโฆ
He could always come back in a few minutes. Or an hour? Right? Youโd finish eventually, and as much as he wanted to hear your voice, as wonderful as it was he would hear it again soon. It was the most polite thing to do, in case you saw him looking at you with wondrous fondness.
Howzer lowered his arms and turned his back as he began to walk away.

Kriff. He stilled. His eyes were wide enough that he was glad he wasnโt facing you because he was certain he would end up with a raging blush if you saw. It was commonplace for him now to know he would. Heโd catch himself watching you laugh or trying to hide a giggle, and heโd go red-faced. Heโd catch you trying to hide your own staring gaze at him and try to hide, with a clear of the throat and a sip of water, when he caught you. Heโd find himself locked in a small moment where gazes met, his breath caught in his throat, and feel such a deep connection with you heโd need a moment to refocus.
Lieutenant Damnata seemed to find it worthy of a gentle tease. Suarve may have dropped it before Howzer was promoted to Captain; when he was trying not to aggravate fresh burns after blowing up something or other to defend the base from a Sepperatist ambush (though his memory was still fuzzy). And youโฆ
You have acted differently since. And not in a bad way.
โSir?โ
Realising where he was, he cleared his throat, took a breath to return to hiding, and turned to face you with a familiar, friendly smile. โIโm sorry if I disturbed you.โ
โYou didnโt.โ Your smile wasโฆ wider towards him since then. Or, well, maybe not wider per se, butโฆ relieved? Yesโฆ Relieved. You had seemed reasonably glad he survived his near sacrifice, which he was surprised at. Well, he wasnโt because you were always relieved when someone survived, but he was becauseโฆ most civilians from Coruscant he had heard about franklyโฆ didnโt.
He had half expected the relief to go by now, but it never left. And it had been two months.
โIโฆย didnโt?โ He cleared his throat again and his back straightened unnaturally. Too straight! โI mean,โ he forced himself to relax, โIโm glad. That I didnโt.โ
You laughed. Well, more of a giggle, really, but he enjoyed it. He loved it, actuallyโฆ It wasnโt like he, as a clone, was allowed to love much at all aside from his brothers. But he could openly love your laugh. He could openly love your smile. He could openly love things about youโฆ

And he wanted to.
You gestured him into the room with a tilt of your head, and Howzer was more than willing to.
โIโm late for supper again, I know, but you normally donโt come to find me personally.โ Howzer didnโt reply at first. To think that you thought he only came to you when you were late for something made his brows furrow and pinch together softly in concern and faint hurt. โYouโฆ did come here to make sure I still lived, right?โ
โThat wasnโt the main reason, noโฆโ He spoke slowly on purpose, careful and steady. Thinking as he let them leave him. โI havenโt seen you in a few days, and couldnโt comm you behind enemy lines.โ
You wore your surprise well, and then you cursed under your breath. โYou came back today?โ
Howzer laughed to hide the wryness of mirth. The question, he understood, wasnโt supposed to sound annoyed at him. โApparently so. If my presence here means what I think it does.โ
He may have been a clone, and he may not be an ALPHA, but he wasnโt an idiot. He had noticed that, whilst he chose to stand with some distance between the two of you (not enough to be distant, just enough to be seen as friendly or casual), you had closed it. When he chose to sneak glances at you after catching you staring, he saw the redness on his cheeks. And sometimes, he was positive you were flirting with him.
But he wasnโt arrogant enough to assume you were, either, and neither asked if you were or responded as if you were. Perhaps it made people think him oblivious, but he wasnโt.
On the contrary.ย
โIโm sorry, Howzer.โ You were also the only civilian working in the GAR who dropped his rank, intentional or not, when he wasnโt giving you orders. โI planned to see you, but I must have been so caught up with trying to get these reports and experiments up and running that Iโโ
โItโs alright, meshโla.โ The term of endearment came from his lips without warning, so used to calling you that in his own mind, and he internally hoped it went unnoticed. But, judging by your confusion itโฆ had not. โI arrived within the last hour.โ
It was less than that. Fifteen minutes at least โ twenty at most. He didnโt want to say it. He didnโt want to seem desperate, or risk your job, or risk letting his brothers down, orโ
โWhatโs it mean?โ Howzer hummed in surprised at your question. You looked at him, and by the force he thought your expression, the way your brows lightly pinched at the front in thought, was so endearing he almost forgot he was supposed to be listening. โMeshโla.โ
He hoped you hadnโt that. As always, when it came to you, however, you noticed the things he didnโt want to be noticed.
He felt his cheeks warm. โIt means โbeautifulโ...โย
Howzer expected you to run. It would be smarter to do that. Instead, you title your head toward your shoulder with a playful, but bashful, smile. โAnd youโฆ called me beautiful?โ
He rubbed the back of his neck and averted his gaze to one side shyly. โI donโtโฆ I donโt see anyone other than you in here to call that. And even if there was, you would โ I wouldโฆ. Iโd stillโฆโ He closed his left eye to cringe at how his words cameย โIโd still only call you beautiful because you are. To me. I mean, youโre beautiful me. To meโ You startled to giggle the way he liked, โI was meant to sayโฆ Umโฆโย
He blinked at you and smiled at the way your eyes met his with nothing but an affection that made his knees want to perish.ย He enjoyed it when you laughed or smiled at something he said, though to have it at his expense wasโฆ both embarrassing and somehow relieving.
He supposed, in many ways, the relief came from loving you in just as many forms. But the one he loved you most as, he could not have you with.
And, well, you looked bashful, too. As much as he felt. That helped. He guessed.
It was new to him. All of these things. Theyโd been ensnaring him for months, but it was still the first time he had loved someone the way he loved you. Maybe if he was allowed to be a child, with parents that loved him, he would have done. Maybe, if he werenโt a soldier on the front lines and just a mechanic in the hangars, he would have done. But thenโฆ he wouldnโt have met you. And he wouldnโt love you. It would be another Howzer. A different Howzer. And if he wasnโt on Ryloth and instead a mechanic, his name wouldnโt be Howzer at all.
Maybe it would be Tongs, or Solder, or something, and he wouldnโt have the same personality.ย
And that terrified him.

Howzer had no time to say anything before he felt your lips against his. His eyes were wide and all thoughts ran from his mind in favour of momentary confusion, where he did not realise you were kissing him whilst knowing you were. A moment of not knowing how to respond before, slowly, allowing his eyes to close and follow his movements.
His arms hung at his sides, stiff and uncertain, there but wanting to move without knowing where or how. What was right or wrong. What was polite or not. He knew he wanted to cup your face the way you were holding his. He knew he wanted to pull you close. He knew he wanted to cradle your jaw and feel your heat beating like his was. But did you want him to? Was that a step too far?

โwhat were you thinking? just standing there? you couldโve been killed!โ hunterโs voice penetrated your clouded thoughts, scolding you for a poor job. he had a point; you were almost killed.
โbut i wasnโt, hunter, so whatโs the big deal?โ you challenge, crossing your arms over your chest. what was next, was he going to question how you worked with the team? was he going to exclude you from future missions? you almost dared him.
โthe big deal? y/n you nearly cost us the mission and you could have been killed,โ he paused, taking a minute to think. though, given his next words, he should have taken more time to think, โi think you should sit out on the next mission,โ his voice was still raised, breaths spilling from his mouth like he ran a marathon.

there wasnโt a lot of places for you to go, so you sat in the co-pilotโs chair. you brought a knee up to your chest, resting your chin on it. the silence was comforting, but your mind still swam. hunterโs words, their words, the child cryingโฆ
โfor the record, i donโt think you should sit out next mission,โ tech was the first to speak, the softness and quietness of his voice illustrating just how unused to that he was. his words only earned a scoff from you.
โit was the child crying, no?โ he guessed. tech noticed the shift in your demeanor when the child started crying to her mother, wondering why everyone left. you grew stiff, your eyes unfocused, and of course, you were nearly shot.
โwhat gave me away?โ you asked him, still refusing to meet eyes with him. despite tech not being well-versed in comfort, he still knew how to read people. he could read them very well. interpreting those emotions was a different skill.
โthe fact you were nearly shot, mainly,โ he stated as-a-matter-of-factly, โbut also the way your demeanor changed. your shoulders tightened, your eyes widened. not to mention your voice changed,โ he went on to describe just how much your body changed. you didnโt think he paid that much attention to you.

โwhen i was a kid, i was bullied a lot,โ you started, pulling down the wall youโve built up over the years, โtheir form of bullying was excluding me from things. i was invited to parties, but never talked to. i was never played with, and kids made fun of me for the stuff i liked,โ you continued. youโve never spoken to any of them about this. it was too sensitive. the fear of rejection and judgement was too strong.
silence followed, filling the space between you. tech didnโt know what to say, but he knew that this was sensitive information. he knew that it was hard for you to talk about, and so he didnโt want to say anything to potentially make things worse.

cody, any chance he could get, would make comments that would make anyone flush. you, however, never budged. you offered him a small smile, and a shake of your head before moving on. challenge accepted.

โif you need me, iโll be in the hangar, sir,โ he gently tipped your chin with a coiled pointer finger before stalking off. his move was bold, especially given how you two barely knew each other. your stomach fluttered at his touch, even if it was fleeting. shivers crawled down your spine, and not ones in warning. your expression hardened, but your eyes told a different story. your heart melted a little, and you felt the lingering affects of codyโs finger.
โnoted,โ you spoke, and cody heard you. he smirked as he stalked off, pride filling his chest. he wasnโt going to lie, though. you werenโt the only one that felt the spark at the touch. cody felt it in the pit of his stomach, and it terrified him.
