who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunterThe Mikaelson family owns a large piece of land in the mountains, bought generations ago. Hidden there is a great white oak tree, peppered with blades, their handles inscribed with the names of hundreds of people.Spencer Hastings stumbles across the tree, having unknowingly crossed onto their property and, curious, starts taking pictures of the strange oak, intent on looking up the names sprouting awkwardly from the wood like stumpy branches. Startled by a strange rustling noise, she yanks one of the blades out to defend herself (in precise script, the name on the haft reads Elijah) and is nearly overwhelmed by the painful howls of the wolf laying not twenty feet away in the woods.

The way she manipulates questions about where she’s from, neatly avoiding the subject, the overlong pauses when anyone brings up an event before she’d moved to town, the way she whispers, her face twisted with pain, at the waters edge.All Elijah can do, has ever done, is give her his support. He doesn’t know what secrets she’s hiding, but when she brings him a delicate filigree necklace, dotted with black pearls, and begs him to hide it from her, he doesn’t question it.  Though her claim of “If I can’t find it, I’ll get to stay,” brings only a heavy sense of foreboding.

who’s the witch and who’s the familiarTruth be told, familiars are a little.. old fashioned. Have you seen the extra cash required for a down payment to rent if you have a pet? Sure it would likely help Spencer with a few of her trickier spells, and it’s not really like a familiar is a pet exactly because - but when she finally moves into her apartment and finds a spirit perfectly amiable to her presence (and willing to lend a hand in magical endeavors) she pushes back the date she’d set aside to summon up a creature. Twice.Ok, five times. Elijah the spirit seems to get ridiculously snippy when she brings up the subject.

who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addictElijah is pinch-hitting for his younger sister at their family-owned coffee shop (“Really, Rebekah, I’m supposed to take a conference call about the bean distributors at 4- no I can’t take your shift. No, I don’t care if your paper is- I’m going to speak with Nik- No I’m not lying.”) when he first whips up a red-eye for a lovely, if tired-looking, woman named Spencer.She argues with someone over the phone about a case (a detective? Elijah considers for roughly 3 seconds before he spies the stockings, the demure but sharp heels - and a briefcase filled with perfectly stacked and labeled papers - Lawyer, he hastily corrects) and he’s sure that he’ll never see her again until he nearly bowls her over outside the shop doors a week later, knocking her to-go cup to the cement with a splatter.Making it up to her is the least he could do, but seeing as he owns a majority of the shop? Replacing her coffee really doesn’t count. "Dinner, perhaps?“

who’s the professor and who’s the TAElijah doesn’t pursue younger women. No matter how charming, or sly, or how easily she wraps him around her finger before he’s even noticed. They’ve little less than a year before she’s graduated and it’s all too easy to promise that when the year is up their freedom will be well won, but sharing space multiple times a week, messaging her about her day the papers they need to grade, finding that he can recite her takeout orders from memory after having spent so many late evenings in his office- the year cannot end fast enough.

who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss)Elijah is second in line to the throne and all too often ends up the unintended patsy for his younger brother Niklaus’ schemes. His quick-wittedness often gets him out of the tight spots his brother accidentally or not leaves him in, but a few too many bruises prompts his mother to insist he claim a knight as a bosom companion.He very much doubts that his mother had a nobleman’s daughter in mind, sharp tongued, skilled with a rapier and just as likely to find trouble as Niklaus.

who’s the teacher and who’s the single parentMs. Hastings is a stunning woman. Elijah’s youngest brother Henrik is in her class and quickly spots the smile on his brothers lips after he spends.. probably far too long speaking about subjects other than Henrik during the parent-teacher conference. He may not be his parent, but Elijah is Henrik’s guardian, and Rebekah is still in high school and Kol and Niklaus are- He still finds himself at the school more than he should, and Henrik’s latest excuse about a false stomachache is starting to make Elijah wonder if his brother isn’t trying to play matchmaker.Not that he’s complaining.
