In the brief moment that she leaves Kim behind, even with her eyes trained on the snow-flecked ground in front of her converse, she misses the feeling of her at her side, the constant near brush of shoulders and elbows and stray fingers. Relief at her return is instant. “Yeah right; he’d just get Scott or Young Neil to let him back in.” She turns, her head just so, mouth carved once again into a crooked ghost of a smile aimed at the redhead. “I guess I could just kick them all out. It’s not like anyone would miss—“ ALMOST says Sex Bob-omb, ALMOST fucks everything up, “—those clowns, not for one party.”
Her gaze flickers back to the sidewalk and she gives Kim’s shoulder a gentle nudge with her own, deliberate, playful, teeth squeezing the swell of her lower lip just to keep from grinning too obviously in the patchwork streetlights. “According to Stephen, all of my expressions have the same ‘unreadable, dead-eyed corpse stare.’ You wouldn’t know if I was happy, uncomfortable, or about to be interred.” Dark eyes slip sideways just enough to watch the other’s face in her periphery, half blocked out by the rim of her glasses. “But no, it’s a good idea. I like it. But like…what kind of lie though? Something dumb, like ‘the refrigerator is running and we have to go catch it?’ Or like…I don’t know. More serious?”
Kim still hasn’t looked her in the eyes since she said what she did just minutes ago, and she still doesn’t look her in the eyes even when she nudges against her shoulder. But she FEELS it. Feels butterflies gather and flutter about low in her stomach. Feels goosebumps rise up on her fair and freckled skin, goosebumps that have nothing to do with the steadily dropping temperature. It’s stupid to get these types of feelings over Julie because just as she’s out of Stephen’s league she’s out of Kim’s league as well. They’re on different levels, Julie being a ten and Kim maybe being a solid five. Yet here they are, and Julie is telling her that her idea is good and Kim is growing more and more anxious. There’s slight relief and slight nervousness when she spots Julie’s place in the distance.
Something between a snort and a laugh escapes her and she blushes again because what a gross sound. “ I like the refrigerator thing, I don’t think something too serious would work. And maybe we can work out a signal instead of just trying to guess. I’ll pull out the classic finger gun and fake end my THRILLING life if I need you to come save me. ” There’s a pause as she steels her nerve. “ Or maybe I’ll just come steal you away from whoever you’re talking to whenever I want to, signal or not. ” She finally steals a glance but only for a short moment and then she’s looking away fro her again, though her heart is once again racing. She knows she’s not subtle but that’s part of her schtick. Show vague interest and let the rest fall into place---or not. Whatever.
JULIE.
Her first instinct is, naturally, to disparage Stephen’s music as a whole, but for once she lets it go unmocked, has a brief realization that calling his songs shitty is calling the band shitty and by extension…whatever. “I guess he’s just learning what not to do.” When their shoulders touch there’s a sharp inhale, a shiver threatening to run down her spine as she masks the near gasp with a sniff. “Don’t, um… don’t worry about it.”
Once they’re out in the cold and she’s fumbling with the shop keys, she pauses, hand still on the door, and clears her throat. “You know you’re not like…an actual disappointment, right? I mean you don’t disappoint people. Not that it matters…” She feels like an idiot; there’s no way to make it sound like she doesn’t care, to stay cool and unaffected, so she changes the subject instead, starts walking without ever glancing in Kim’s direction. “I broke it off with Stephen. I hope he doesn’t make things weird tonight.”
Slight shock roots her to her spot for a few moments as Julie begins to walk away. She’s blushing, and it’s lucky for her that it’s cold out because it gives her cheeks a natural flush. Her heartbeat quickens and her stomach ties itself into knots because as much as she labels her self-deprecation as humor it usually isn’t. And hearing Julie seem to take an actual interest in her wellbeing is... unexpected to say the least. She’s still standing there watching Julie walk away when she hears her begin to say something else. She shoves her hands in her pockets and hurries to catch up so she can hear her.
This statement makes much more sense than the last because Stephen is an okay guy and all but Julie’s out of his league, at least in Kim’s mind. “ If he does just kick his ass out, then he’ll think twice next time. ” It’s a better solution than, ‘ if he does just tell him we’re dating, ’ which she’s sure Julie would’ve scoffed at. She’s holding onto what Julie told her but she’s not going to bring it up again because she doesn’t want to scare her off, or make her change her mind about her NOT being a disappointment. “ How about this. If I see you looking uncomfortable next to Stephen I’ll come give you some bullshit excuse to walk away, one that’s obviously a lie so it’ll wound his ego. And if you see me looking uncomfortable next to Scott and his high schooler you’ll do the same for me. Deal? ”
