Cowboy rabbot

Robby’s grandparents, fortunately, weren’t cruel or abusive. All the same, the message and shame that came with it took hold regardless: An alpha who ‘needed’ to nest was weak, broken, and something to be fixed.

And yet, the yearning for a nest, just the tiniest shred of safety and home, of ‘mine’, would call to Robby so loud that, on particularly bad nights, it was all he could think about. No amount of background noise or company could make the longing stop, or ease the discomfort. On his worst days, he succumbs and tries his best to build something that will scratch the itch, but he was never taught and never allowed himself enough grace to learn how to make it feel right.

A few months after they get together, Jack comes home to Robby, knowing he’s had a bad day and probably was still feeling it. What he didn’t expect was to find his alpha curled up in the saddest little nest he’s ever seen, staring back at him with big teary, heartbroken eyes, begging him to ignore this. ‘It was just the one- I just needed- I won’t ever do it again. I’ll be a good alpha.’

Cue Jack making it his mission to not only help him make this nest just right, but also ensuring that his mate never, ever felt this kind of shame about his own needs and desires ever again, especially around him.

"I'm sorry," Robby says, wiping his tears from his big, sad eyes. "It was just the one nest, I promise, it was a rough shift, man. I'll be a good alpha for you--"

"Hey, hey, hey." Jack rushes to clutch his hands, joining him in his nest. "Breathe with me, alpha. This?" He gestures to the sad, bare nest. "This isn't shameful."

Robby avoids his eye, downcast and sad. Jack cups his cheeks. "Hey. Hey. You know a secret?" Jack smiles. "I've never liked nesting too much. I know how to make a damn good nest, but I've never liked them myself. Never felt the pull. But this?" He takes off his tshirt and adds it to Robby's pile. "Why don't we make a nest together, sweetheart. Will you let me cuddle you in it?"

"You're not mad?" Robby repeats, his pheromones finally turning neutral, open, no longer quite so horrified to be found like this.

"No," Jack emphasize. "I promise. Never want you to feel ashamed of nesting ever again." He's got a lot of work to do to drive that fear out of Robby, but it's good work, and he's happy to do it.

Slowly, Robby leans back, letting Jack see the rest of his nest. "Look at this," Jack purrs, watching Robby start to preen and perk up. "Let's fill this out a little more, alpha. There we go." He climbs all the way in, laying his head on his alpha's chest.
