I'm actually always thinking about the way both Katniss and Haymitch use a version of "Peeta says" to describe something that is undisputable truth!
Katniss in Mockingjay's Epilogue: "Peeta says it will be okay. We have each other. And the book."
Haymitch in SOTR's Epilogue: "She’s not an easy person; she’s like me, Peeta always says."
Specifically they use it for things they themselves have difficulty believing. But Peeta makes them believe in those things!

Um. It's that their love was the point. It's the reason they survived, it's the thing that accidentally caused and then fueled the rebellion. It's the heart of all of it. They changed the game and turned the world on it's head just because they cared so much. And it wasn't that caring deeply caused them to be revolutionary. Caring was the revolution.

Maybe unpopular opinion, but I HATE everlark pregnancy fics when during labor Katniss curses out Peeta and is rude to him while she’s giving birth. Like girl would be scared and frightened, but I don’t think she would ever be that harsh to him even under those circumstances. Like yea, I totally see him being a helicopter husband and fretting over her, and her telling him to give her some space, but I don’t think she would be full blown cursing him out. Let’s be fr Peeta is her BABY
I’m confident that if Katniss truly hadn’t wanted kids Peeta would have gotten a vasectomy like very early on in their relationship. He canonically only cares about getting to be with Katniss, so he wasn’t gonna break up with her over this. That never would have happened, this is not a deal breaker to him. Peeta doesn’t even express an interest in children beyond basic human empathy. We know he cares about protecting the innocent, but that doesn’t mean he even pictured himself as a dad. That’s all Katniss. She was the one who always not-so-secretly wanted to have a family with him but kept telling us it was about what Peeta wanted. Remember, the only things Peeta actually expresses are 1. Wondering if Katniss likes him back. 2. Worrying that Katniss likes Gale more. 3. Deciding that Katniss and Gale make more sense together (based on literally nothing) and actively wanting them to get together 😭 4. Wanting to die so he ‘fixes’ all of Katniss’s problems (LOL fat chance). 5. Wanting Katniss to get mad at him so ‘it’s easier’ when he goes (LOL coach Peeta had the exact opposite effect). Bro never says anything about what their future would even look like beyond just hanging out with Haymitch and ‘being normal’ (which to him is silently doing crafts together). Katniss is the only one dreaming about Peeta’s babies and fantasizing about how tender he’d be with them. Give me a BREAK anti-everlark-family people. Girl literally said she wouldn’t have minded being a teen mom as long as the hunger games got cancelled forever.

I think I’m normal about thg and everlark until I talk to my irl friends about it and I quickly realize no I am not normal.
The infamous line “you could live a hundred lifetimes and not deserve him, you know” (Catching Fire, pg 178) is such a loaded statement. It is often viewed through an everlark lens (rightfully so) but it also reveals much about Haymitch.
Primarily, this comment is his way of lashing out at the entire quell situation, insulting Katniss in the process. Haymitch and Katniss are so similar in their upbringings, way of thinking, and relationship with Peeta. By insulting Katniss, he insults himself. Like Katniss, he feels so guilty and shameful that his initial reaction to the quell announcement was that of anger and self pity when Peeta was thinking of a plan to save everyone.
When Peeta begs to go back into the arena, Haymitch is reminded that he also does not deserve Peeta. This is someone who showed him kindness when he did not deserve it. Peeta took care of him on the train after the reaping after Haymitch had already been no help as a mentor. He even baked him bread and checked up on him after he decided to prioritize Katniss over him in the arena. Now he is selfless again in his mission to save everyone.
Haymitch says this because he believes he, too, could live a hundred lifetimes and never deserve Peeta.
