I’ve read the huger games recentlyyyy
The Thirst Games
The problem, Katniss decided, was that Peeta had gotten hot.
Not attractive.
He had always been attractive, technically. Katniss could admit that now. The blond curls, the blue eyes, the broad shoulders from hauling sacks of flour around since childhood.
But after the war, something happened.
Peeta Mellark got *hot*.
It was deeply inconvenient.
He'd regained the weight he'd lost in the Capitol and then some. Years of rebuilding the bakery had put muscle back across his shoulders and arms. He kept his hair shorter now. His jaw had sharpened with age.
There was also the leg.
Katniss didn't understand the leg.
Obviously, she'd known about the prosthetic since the first Games. She'd watched him learn to use it.
But sometime around twenty-four, Peeta had stopped trying to disguise his limp.
He just...owned it.
The result was an irritating sort of confidence that Katniss hadn't been prepared for.
Unfortunately, neither had the female population of Panem.
Katniss first became aware of the problem in District Four.
They were there for Annie's birthday.
Peeta had gone to buy bread because, according to Peeta, District Four bakers did something interesting with sea salt and he wanted to investigate.
He returned forty minutes later.
Katniss looked up from the porch.
"Where's the bread?"
Peeta stopped.
"Oh."
"You forgot the bread."
"I got distracted."
Annie, sitting beside Katniss, covered a smile.
Katniss narrowed her eyes.
"By what?"
Peeta's ears turned pink.
Katniss knew those ears.
"Peeta."
"The baker wanted to talk."
"For forty minutes?"
"She had questions."
"About bread?"
Peeta hesitated.
Katniss stood.
Annie made a suspicious choking noise behind her.
"What kind of questions?"
"Katniss."
"What?"
"Nothing happened."
"I didn't ask if anything happened."
"You were about to."
"I was not."
Peeta kissed her forehead.
Katniss remained suspicious.
The next morning, the baker sent a loaf to Annie's house.
With a note.
For Peeta.
Katniss burned the note.
---
It happened again in the Capitol.
Katniss hated the Capitol anyway, so this was simply another reason.
They'd been invited to some reconstruction anniversary neither of them wanted to attend.
Peeta wore a dark blue suit.
That was mistake number one.
Mistake number two was rolling up his sleeves after dinner.
Katniss watched it happen from across the room.
One woman approached him.
Then another.
Then another.
Within fifteen minutes, Peeta was surrounded.
Katniss stared.
Johanna appeared beside her.
"Wow."
Katniss didn't look away.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"What?"
Johanna took a drink.
"Your baker's popular."
"He's being polite."
"Sure."
Peeta laughed at something a brunette said.
The brunette touched his arm.
Katniss's eyes narrowed.
Johanna noticed.
"Oh, this is going to be fun."
"What's going to be fun?"
"Nothing."
"Stop saying nothing."
The brunette touched Peeta again.
Katniss started walking.
Johanna followed immediately.
"Absolutely not missing this."
Katniss reached Peeta.
"Hi."
Peeta smiled.
"Hey."
The brunette looked at Katniss.
Peeta gestured.
"You know Katniss."
Everyone knew Katniss.
The brunette smiled.
"Of course."
Katniss smiled back.
It wasn't a particularly friendly smile.
Peeta noticed.
His mouth twitched.
The brunette returned her attention to him.
"So, as I was saying—"
Katniss slipped her hand into Peeta's.
The brunette glanced down.
Good.
Peeta squeezed Katniss's fingers.
The woman continued talking.
Katniss moved closer.
Peeta looked at her.
She put her other hand on his chest.
His eyebrows lifted.
Johanna was openly laughing behind them now.
The brunette finally seemed to understand.
"Oh."
Katniss smiled.
"Yes."
Peeta coughed.
The woman excused herself.
Katniss watched her leave.
Then she looked at the other two women.
They left too.
Peeta waited.
Katniss turned toward him.
"What?"
His lips twitched.
"Nothing."
"Don't."
"I didn't say anything."
"You were going to."
Peeta leaned down.
"Are you marking your territory?"
"No."
"Because you practically climbed me."
"She kept touching you."
"She touched my arm."
"Twice."
Peeta laughed.
Katniss glared.
"Do you want her touching you?"
"No."
"Then stop smiling."
"I'm smiling at *you*."
"Oh."
That took some of the wind out of her.
Johanna leaned between them.
"For the record, this is disgusting."
"Go away," Katniss said.
"Gladly."
She didn't.
---
District Seven was worse.
Peeta took off his shirt.
Katniss almost killed him herself.
They were helping rebuild a community hall. It was summer. It was hot.
Perfectly reasonable.
Katniss still felt betrayed.
Peeta pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it onto a fence.
Three women stopped working.
Actually stopped.
One of them walked directly into a wheelbarrow.
Katniss stared at her.
Peeta didn't notice.
Of course he didn't.
He was lifting lumber.
Which was worse.
Katniss picked up his shirt and walked over.
"Put this on."
Peeta looked at her.
"What?"
"Your shirt."
"I'm hot."
"So is everyone."
"That's why I took it off."
"Put it back on."
Peeta stared.
Then understanding dawned.
"No."
Katniss's mouth fell open.
"No?"
"I'm hot."
"Peeta."
He smirked.
The bastard actually smirked.
"You seem tense."
"I'm going to shoot you."
"That's not very romantic."
Katniss shoved the shirt against his chest.
Behind her, someone giggled.
Katniss turned.
Three women abruptly became very interested in lumber.
She turned back.
Peeta was biting his lip.
"Don't laugh."
"I'm not."
"You are.”
"I'm really not."
"You know what you're doing."
That stopped him.
"What am I doing?"
"This."
Katniss gestured at him.
Peeta looked down at himself.
"Existing?"
"Yes."
"I'm sorry."
"No, you're not."
"No."
He kissed her.
Katniss forgot what she was angry about for approximately four seconds.
Then someone whistled.
Katniss pulled away.
Peeta laughed against her hair.
---
The worst incident happened at home.
Katniss had assumed District 12 was safe.
Everyone knew them.
Everyone knew they were together.
Everyone knew Katniss had a bow.
Apparently none of these facts were sufficiently discouraging.
She walked into the bakery one afternoon and found a woman leaning across the counter.
Very far across the counter.
Peeta stood on the other side.
"Can I help you?"
The woman turned.
She was young. Pretty. Probably visiting from District Two.
"Oh. Hi."
Katniss looked at Peeta.
Peeta looked suspiciously innocent.
"What are you doing?"
"Working."
Katniss looked at the woman.
The woman smiled.
"I was asking Peeta about his buns."
Silence.
Peeta closed his eyes.
Katniss stared.
The woman lasted approximately three seconds.
"I mean the bread."
"Of course you do."
Peeta made a strangled noise.
The woman bought six rolls she clearly didn't want and fled.
Katniss waited until the door closed.
Then she turned.
Peeta was shaking.
"Are you laughing?"
"No."
"You are."
"I'm sorry."
"Your buns?"
That did it.
Peeta doubled over.
Katniss smacked him with a dish towel.
"This isn't funny!"
"It's a little funny."
"Women are throwing themselves at you."
"They are not."
"She practically climbed over the counter."
"She wanted bread."
"She wanted your *buns*."
Peeta laughed harder.
Katniss threw the towel at his head.
He caught it.
Then he came around the counter.
Katniss crossed her arms.
"I'm serious."
"I know."
"I don't like it."
His amusement softened.
Peeta stopped in front of her.
"You know I don't care, right?"
Katniss looked away.
"Katniss."
"I know."
He touched her chin.
She reluctantly looked at him.
"I mean it."
"I know."
"I could have every woman in Panem throwing herself across this counter—"
"Don't say things like that."
"—and I'd still want you."
Katniss's expression softened.
Peeta kissed her.
Slowly.
When he pulled away, she caught the front of his shirt and kissed him again.
"Better?" he murmured.
"No."
"No?"
"You're still too attractive."
Peeta smiled.
"Not sure what you want me to do about that."
"I don't know. Get an ugly haircut."
"No."
"Grow a terrible mustache."
"Absolutely not."
"Stop taking your shirt off in public."
"Also no."
Katniss glared.
Peeta kissed the tip of her nose.
The bakery door opened.
A woman walked inside.
She looked at Peeta.
Her eyes traveled downward.
Then back up.
"Oh," she said.
Katniss slowly turned.
Peeta whispered, "Be nice."
"I am nice."
"Katniss."
The woman approached the counter.
"Are you Peeta Mellark?"
Peeta sighed.
"Yes."
"I've seen your photographs."
Katniss's eyes narrowed.
Peeta glanced at her.
"Katniss."
"I haven't done anything."
The woman smiled at Peeta.
"You're even better looking in person."
Katniss stepped forward.
Peeta caught her around the waist.
"Thank you," he said quickly.
The woman finally noticed Katniss.
"Oh. Are you—"
"His girlfriend."
Peeta's arm tightened around her.
The woman blinked.
"Right."
Katniss smiled.
"Very much."
The woman bought her bread and left.
Peeta waited until the door shut.
Then he buried his face against Katniss's shoulder.
"What?"
His shoulders shook.
"Peeta."
"I'm sorry."
"You're laughing again."
"I love you."
"That's not an apology."
He lifted his head.
"I really do."
Katniss tried to stay angry.
It lasted maybe two seconds.
She sighed.
"This is your fault."
"My face?"
"Yes."
"My apologies."
"And your arms."
"I'll work on those."
"And the stupid hair."
"Anything else?"
Katniss considered him.
"Your ass."
Peeta's eyebrows shot up.
Katniss immediately turned away.
"Nope."
He caught her around the waist.
"Come back."
"I said nothing."
"You absolutely did not say nothing."
"Let go."
"Katniss Everdeen."
She was laughing now.
Peeta turned her around.
"Have you been objectifying me this entire time?"
"No."
"Katniss."
"Maybe."
Peeta looked delighted.
She hated that.
He leaned down.
"Thirsty hoe."
Katniss gasped.
"Excuse me?"
Peeta ran.
Katniss grabbed the nearest loaf.
"PEETA MELLARK."
He disappeared into the kitchen laughing.
Katniss chased him.
Outside the bakery window, two women stopped to watch Peeta run past.
Katniss pointed the loaf at them.
"KEEP WALKING."
They kept walking.
Peeta's laughter echoed from the kitchen.
The problem with Peeta Mellark, Katniss decided, was definitely that he'd gotten hot.
Matching Scars
When Katniss finds Peeta planting the primroses she says “you’re back” because not only is he back home but he’s BACK to himself. His eyes have lost the clouded tortured look! He’s doing something kind and selfless! *guards start to drag me away* THE OLD PEETA NEVER DIED—

no one talks about how everlark’s schedules are aligned. A baker and a hunter are both early risers.
Peeta is uh.. already *cough* risen by the time he wakes up…
🥖
there’s such a latent comedy to the absurdity of katniss’ denial of her feelings. every time she starts doing some bullshit like fantasizing about peeta’s arms or kissing the pearl i would be yelling at my book out loud “GIRL NO ONE IS MAKING YOU DO ALL THAT” and she would not hear me. my pleas would go unanswered. it is so cruel and yet so comical i had to laugh so i wouldn’t cry
This is some wild backstory to get in a single paragraph that never comes up again, lol. Yeah, Katniss accidentally acquired a pet bobcat for a brief time until she killed it. No big deal.
She does this with the birds, too. Everyone else thinks that the way the birds respond to Katniss (and Burdock) is basically magic and meanwhile Katniss is like. "Oh. Yeah. That's a thing that happens sometimes." And then just. Moves on. This girl is out there charming woodland creatures like a Disney Princess and she barely registers it because it's so utterly unremarkable to her and also because she usually ends up killing said woodland creatures.
Part of what makes everlark so good is the way peeta is so wholly and earnestly able to concede that katniss is able to protect herself and him without feeling weird or insecure about it. Like, every time i remember this scene i just beam from ear to ear bc it’s so good!! He’s exactly where he wants to be he knows his girl is strong and has his back!!!
But also, it adds so much weight that peeta doesn’t protect katniss bc he feels like he needs to for any reason, but bc he genuinely wants to. He wants to protect this girl who—mind you—lived her whole life protecting others and assuming that the only reason anyone would want to protect her is if they got something out of it. And to be fair, the way people treat her as the mockingjay absolutely confirms this. In the eyes of the rebellion, she is very much protected only inasmuch as she is ideologically profitable to them, using “protection” as a guise of demeaning her agency. Only peeta goes to the very end protecting her no matter what cost it comes at to him… even when it means protecting her from herself.
This also makes me think of the scene where she needs to tell him to shush while hunting and she’s worried the criticism will hurt his pride and make him mad but he just takes it in stride and then happily admits she should hunt without him. His lack of ego is such a wonderful part of his character and compliments her so well. He loves her strength!!
Those Damn Pearls.
Yes, I am about to bring up the pearl symbolism in this series again and nobody will ever be able to muzzle me. And it is something given a foundation several chapters before Peeta actually gifts Katniss the most well-known pearl.
Her wedding dress that she wore at the final interviews was adorned with pearls all over, and we know that dress symbolized the Capitol stripping her of her agency more than anything. Most centrally in that moment, this took form in them continuing to insist that she maintain a relationship with Peeta on their terms, the very pressure that blurred and was the cause of her finding it difficult to gauge her genuine feelings for him. But when it burned and was replaced by Cinna’s Mockingjay dress, the pearls didn’t burn with it but scattered freely across the stage.
And whose heart, lips, and entire being did Katniss come to associate with her pearl? Who became the pearl that knocked in her pocket against the key to his handcuffs and therefore symbolically his heart, soul, and temporarily ravaged mind, too? Well, the giver of it himself, of course! And what was the one thing her true desires and the Capitol plans for her had in common? Peeta Fucking Mellark. The problem was never him, so he did not become ash like the rest of it. She retrieved that singular morsel of the dress from where it had sprung away to - retrieving the boy with the bread who had already unwittingly stolen her heart long ago - and could finally be in love with him on her terms now. And oh were her terms infinitely more fulfilling and all-encompassing.
Alright, now everybody applaud Suzanne.
As much as I love fics where Katniss gets her pearl back and turns it into a necklace or a wedding ring post war, it makes me crazy that she looses track of the pearl around the same time Peeta returns to himself and to her. Presumably it's lost during the explosion in the city center and the next interaction she has with Peeta he's arguing against the capitol hunger games, then stopping her from eating her nightlock pill. Then planting primroses by her house. If the pearl was Peeta's pure heart locked safely away in her pocket during Mockingjay, it escapes back into his body after the sewer kiss. She doesn't need the pearl anymore. She has Peeta back

There’s something very primal about Katniss, especially about her feelings for Peeta, that I love so incredibly much. The way she feels about him has nothing to do with any labels or social normals or gender expectations. When people try to label it for her she gets uncomfortable and confused. The way she feels about him is less the way a girl feels about a boy and more the way a wolf feels about its bonded mate. She wants to hide in their den together, to protect their pack together, lick his wounds, join up with him to assure both of their survival. Something about how feral she gets trying to protect him and keep him close feels like an animal standing over its wounded counterpart snarling and spitting and growling like a predator backed into a corner. Like when you put a feral cat in a carrier. People are like “katniss who do you LIKE like? Who’s gonna take you to the prom?” And she says “idk about all that human crap but I do want to tuck Peeta into a snug underground cave where he can be best defended against predators and make sure he has enough stock piled acorns to survive the winter.” It’s like she’s so stressed she’s devolved into animal instinct only and her inner animal is a guard dog.
Any complicated feelings about the movies aside… can we take a moment to appreciate Jennifer’s delivery of “because you were kind”
Its breathtaking

Kissing on the nose! 🩷
When Peeta and I finish breakfast, he takes both of our dishes and deposits them in the sink. I stand next to him while he waits for the water to warm up, leaning my head against his shoulder. Me in my hunting clothes, him in his pajamas. He insists on washing the dishes himself, so I stand with him, running my nails lightly along his back. Maybe I'm biased, but I think his dark green pajama shirt is a very good look on him.
We talk about our plans for the day. My hunting, his baking. Maybe some painting. When the dishes are clean and his hands are dry, I know I ought to go. My mornings have gotten later and later every day this week. Very coincidentally timed with our increasing comfort with kissing each other again.
Quite the coincidence indeed.
"I'll probably be back sometime between lunch and dinner." I pause to give Peeta a quick peck on the lips. "I'll see you later."
I turn to leave, but Peeta catches me by the arm. His grip is firm but not forceful. He pulls me back to him and his lips crash against mine.
It's one of those kisses. One that I know will come back to me days, weeks, maybe even years from now. Just the memory will cloud my senses, like it does now. I feel like I'm stuck in a dream—a wonderful dream, being kissed like this—where all I can do is stand here. One hand tangled in the back of his hair, the other resting on his chest. Completely mesmerized.
Peeta, on the other hand, seems like he doesn't know what to do with himself. His hands moving out of sync with each other and rapidly all over my body, like they can't keep up with his brain. They're everywhere. My hair. My waist. My face. My hips. Eventually one arm locks around my lower back, pulling me taut against him as he deepens the kiss. The other arm slides up my back and between my shoulder blades, leaving a trail of fire in its wake as his fingers tangle into my hair.
How long do we stay like this, locked together? I can't think straight. There's nothing in the world but this. Peeta's hands on my body, his scent enveloping me, his lips on mine.
He comes up for air, if just for a moment. But he can't stop kissing me, peppering little kisses on my lips once, twice, three times. I stand there in the haze of whatever the hell is happening, kissing him back whenever his lips find mine again.
He tilts his head to the side as he goes in for a longer kiss again. This time it's less frantic. Just slow and gentle. His face is so close to mine that I can feel his eyelashes flutter against my cheek.
When our lips separate again, I think he's done. But still I wait, eyes closed, lips parted. Have I ever been so hungry and so satisfied at the same time?
"Katniss," he whispers. I feel his forehead press against mine. Feel one soft kiss on the tip of my nose.
"What was that for?" I whisper back, finally opening my eyes.
He grins from ear to ear. "Just remembered that I could."
This time, I'm the one who leans in. I kiss him slowly, fighting my own grin. What a luxury it is, to kiss him like this.
"I'll see you soon?" I try again. I want him to tell me to stay, to pull me on top of him on the couch, to kiss me until my lips are numb.
But I know my boy. He'll insist that I get some fresh air and fresh game. He'll let me go, because he knows I won't be gone long.
He kisses the tip of my nose one more time before releasing his grip on me. "Shoot straight."
