Kissing on the nose! 🩷
When Peeta and I finish breakfast, he takes both of our dishes and deposits them in the sink. I stand next to him while he waits for the water to warm up, leaning my head against his shoulder. Me in my hunting clothes, him in his pajamas. He insists on washing the dishes himself, so I stand with him, running my nails lightly along his back. Maybe I'm biased, but I think his dark green pajama shirt is a very good look on him.
We talk about our plans for the day. My hunting, his baking. Maybe some painting. When the dishes are clean and his hands are dry, I know I ought to go. My mornings have gotten later and later every day this week. Very coincidentally timed with our increasing comfort with kissing each other again.
Quite the coincidence indeed.
"I'll probably be back sometime between lunch and dinner." I pause to give Peeta a quick peck on the lips. "I'll see you later."
I turn to leave, but Peeta catches me by the arm. His grip is firm but not forceful. He pulls me back to him and his lips crash against mine.
It's one of those kisses. One that I know will come back to me days, weeks, maybe even years from now. Just the memory will cloud my senses, like it does now. I feel like I'm stuck in a dream—a wonderful dream, being kissed like this—where all I can do is stand here. One hand tangled in the back of his hair, the other resting on his chest. Completely mesmerized.
Peeta, on the other hand, seems like he doesn't know what to do with himself. His hands moving out of sync with each other and rapidly all over my body, like they can't keep up with his brain. They're everywhere. My hair. My waist. My face. My hips. Eventually one arm locks around my lower back, pulling me taut against him as he deepens the kiss. The other arm slides up my back and between my shoulder blades, leaving a trail of fire in its wake as his fingers tangle into my hair.
How long do we stay like this, locked together? I can't think straight. There's nothing in the world but this. Peeta's hands on my body, his scent enveloping me, his lips on mine.
He comes up for air, if just for a moment. But he can't stop kissing me, peppering little kisses on my lips once, twice, three times. I stand there in the haze of whatever the hell is happening, kissing him back whenever his lips find mine again.
He tilts his head to the side as he goes in for a longer kiss again. This time it's less frantic. Just slow and gentle. His face is so close to mine that I can feel his eyelashes flutter against my cheek.
When our lips separate again, I think he's done. But still I wait, eyes closed, lips parted. Have I ever been so hungry and so satisfied at the same time?
"Katniss," he whispers. I feel his forehead press against mine. Feel one soft kiss on the tip of my nose.
"What was that for?" I whisper back, finally opening my eyes.
He grins from ear to ear. "Just remembered that I could."
This time, I'm the one who leans in. I kiss him slowly, fighting my own grin. What a luxury it is, to kiss him like this.
"I'll see you soon?" I try again. I want him to tell me to stay, to pull me on top of him on the couch, to kiss me until my lips are numb.
But I know my boy. He'll insist that I get some fresh air and fresh game. He'll let me go, because he knows I won't be gone long.
He kisses the tip of my nose one more time before releasing his grip on me. "Shoot straight."

The Everdeen Girls:
Asterid Everdeen (Née, March):
Katniss Everdeen:
Primrose Everdeen:
do you think Mrs. Mellark actually loved her children?
No
There might be some complexity, of course we know almost nothing about her or her life. Maybe there were times when she was affectionate, maybe there are children she was kinder to than Peeta, maybe she is part of a long cycle of abuse, maybe she was trying to be better, maybe she believed that she loved her kids, maybe even said so. But I do not believe abuse like that can come from a place of genuine love and care and I don’t think it would be healthy of us to see how horribly she treats Peeta and think well maybe she does love him. That’s not what love looks like
It is not a cash grab for a professional artist to make art and charge for it. The art doesn't become unethical, greedy, or "only about the money" just because you didn't like it. We've gotta separate the concepts of not for me and morally corrupt. Let artists get paid, even the ones who have been paid before
all’s fair in love and war

Saw an absolute garbage take on tiktok today and then @mandrake-mistakes lightly bullied me into writing a missing moment I've had swirling around my head for a while. I'll be adding it to my missing moments fic shortly but sometimes it's fun to put some fic on the dash.

"I'm with the Mockingjay," Haymitch says.
And with that, my stomach plummets. My eyes start to go dark around the edges. I'm staring at my hands, what's left of them, anyway. What's left of us? This handful of Victors who just secured a future as bleak as the past we fought to change.
"Excellent. That carries the vote. Now we really must take our places for the execution," Coin says.
Katniss says something to her as she passes to leave. I don't care what she says. Not anymore. I bury my face in my hands, my tender skin stinging at every point of contact. I don't care about the pain. Not anymore.
Coin leaves. People sweep into the room, tossing powder and instructions at the Mockingjay and pulling her out the door. I watch as the other Victors follow her, but Haymitch hangs back.
The two of them, always with their secret codes. Their secret plans. The rage consumes me all at once and I jump to my feet, then throw my chair as hard as I can against the ground. The sound of the wood splintering satisfies the beast in me. If I had the time I would tear this entire building to the ground, piece by piece. Maybe after I'm certain Snow has taken his last breath, I'll come back and do just that.
"Watch it, boy," Haymitch snarls.
I can't help myself. I grab him by the shoulders and slam him into the wall. He doesn't fight back, and I wonder if he even has the fight left to do so.
"Do you know what you just did?!" I shout. "Do you even understand what you caused, or are you too drunk to care?"
"Pull yourself together. Now." His voice is quiet but stern, and his eyes hold mine firmly. "Last thing we need is for the guards to sedate you. I need your help."
A hollow laugh falls from my mouth as I release him. I look down at my hands and see that some of the tender pink skin on my hands is bleeding. How appropriate, now that the blood of every child who dies in the Hunger Games from here on out is on our hands.
Real or not real? She made my hands bleed like this once. All of the same rage all for the crime of…what? Loving her? Who knows. I have no one left to ask, no one left to trust. My head aches. I want to lie down and I'm not sure I'll ever get back up.
"I'm not helping either one of you ever again," I tell Haymitch.
Their secret codes. Their secret plans.
"You're seeing the pieces. Look at the board," he says.
It's not the first time he's told me this, I know that. But everything is too shiny and muddled and painful to remember when I've heard this before. He's talking about the big picture, I guess.
"What, we get to kill Snow? Well, whoopie, but it feels a bit hollow now that nothing we fought for matters," I say dryly.
"It's not over 'til the Mockingjay sings," he counters.
The Mockingjay. Katniss. Singing. Katniss singing, now I wouldn't mind that. Would I? Stay focused. What is he saying? My head hurts too much for this. My hands are still bleeding. There's blood on our hands. But maybe it's not over?
"I don't understand," I plead.
"I thought you were getting better."
"I am! I was! I thought I was, but now I don't know! I don't know anything anymore! The Katniss I knew would never allow the Hunger Games to continue!" I bellow.
"That's right. She wouldn't." His voice is so eerily calm it unsettles me.
I freeze. I replay the past several minutes. The vote. The rose. For Prim. And then I understand.
She wouldn't. And she won't.
"Haymitch, what is she going to do?" I whisper.
"No idea," he says, clapping me on the shoulder a little too hard. "Be ready."
With that, he follows the crowd and leaves me rubbing my left shoulder to try and minimize the pain. And then my stomach plummets, yet again.
I do know her.
I know exactly what she's going to do.
And I have to be ready.

How Etymology Could Have Tipped You Off to What You Needed to Know About Peeta and Gale.
By this point, we should all know that Peeta and Gale represent rebirth and destruction at their cores respectively. However, here’s a reminder that their literal names foreshadow this to readers the very first time you read them. The name “Peeta” can be interpreted in two ways: a literal play on ‘pita BREAD’ to represent his role as the life-giver in the story or a variation of the name “Peter,” which translates to “rock” or “firm foundation.” And wouldn’t you know, he routinely sustains Katniss’s life and cements himself as her strong and steady rock. Then there’s “Gale,” which means “a strong, often times DESTRUCTIVE gust of wind.” So for any person that still likes to claim Suzanne ruined his character on a whim later on, his name alone shows us that his arc was solidified the second she wrote him into existence. There should be no blaming her or us because one didn’t personally pick up on his blatant red flags that fit his name from the beginning.
I have a day dedicated to JUST etymology of the main characters with my students when I am covering The Hunger Games, so this is one of the aspects of the series that I nerd out over most. If we do get a new book like everybody is hoping, I encourage you all to stop whenever a new name appears and see if you can decode their arcs before you even continue with the story. Suzanne’s genius with names is sure to strike again! 💪🏼

Passing my tag off on @firehelpmeforget cuz I have 1 fic lmao
I just know Peeta would hate AI art with a burning passion.
trying to steer dialogue towards a certain plot point while trying to make it sound natural
That entire chapter centered around Asterid calling Katniss up to have a casual conversation about birth control so I could have them say “do you have protection?” “I mean I have my bow…?”
Few things are more iconic than "I have my bow"
What is your favorite line of a fic you wrote?
My favorite line was at the beginning of my long fic Uncross Our Stars so I've spent the whole rest of the writing process haunted by the knowledge that I peaked early and I'll never write this good again
"The first of the candle colored leaves begin to float down from the sugar maples that dot the walk into the Seam from the town center, warning of the looming winter like embers raining down from a forest fire, and I feel choked on imagined smoke."

Do you think that, after the war, Gale gets over Katniss easily??? How long do you think it takes him???
Katniss thinks so. She thinks while hunting in 12 after the war that he’s already kissing another pair of lips. I tend to agree with her. I think he spent her recovery time getting over her. He comes to give her the arrow she uses to shoot Coin with a very defeated attitude and doesn’t try even a little bit to recover their relationship. No apology, no sympathy. Just a detached goodbye. I also don’t think Katniss was a good match for him at all. I focus on how he is bad for her because Katniss is my girl and Gale angers me, but from his side of things she does not support his vision or match his freak and continuously falls short of the version of her he seems to be in love with. So I think it doesn’t take him long to get to 2 and find some fiery girl who thinks all his war crimes are super heroic and hot. Tiktok is sure full of ppl like that these days. He can start there. Good riddance
