My wish to the end of this season: Bonnie realize that she can trust in Kai, that he changed. And changed a long time ago, before the merge, because of her!

I was just dozing off in class, thinking about Bonnie and Kai, their dynamic and how similar they really are! Here are a few jumbled thoughts on them lol

Their fathers did not really accept who they were because they did not fit into their idea of ‘normal’

Rudy Hopkins (Bonnie’s father) was human and though he knew of the Bennetts’ history—and the possibility that his daughter might be a witch—he rejected witchcraft. And though he loved his daughter, in a way he rejected Bonnie’s nature.

Joshua Parker on the other hand, should have in theory been more accepting of his son as he too was a witch. The problem is, Kai was not a witch per se, but a siphon. He was pretty much a human in a witch household.

Their differences warranted them isolation from their family

Both fathers kept them away (very differently mind you):

Bonnie was kept in the dark about her magical heritage and community for the most part of her early life. Yes, she was around Grams but the older woman could not share her knowledge to her granddaughter because she respected Rudy’s wish.

Kai, apart from literally being sent away to an actual Prison World, was also isolated in childhood. He reveals (to Caroline I believe) that he was not even allowed to touch his other family members—not only was he emotionally ostracized he was also physically being kept at a distance.

Kai and Bonnie have many differences that make them fit perfectly together

Bonnie is an only child; Kai had seven siblings. She is caring and understanding; he is a sociopath that was never cared for or about. She was almost corrupted by magic (i.e. her Expression era): he was almost redeemed by it (i.e. the Merge)

Bonnie could benefit a lot from some parts of his personality and he could benefit a lot from some of hers.

Their parallels always made me think about how it would have all played out if they had been the same age, and had met early on. Can you imagine a young Bonnie, barely discovering her powers and an outcast Kai, willing to help her out, seeking kinship and magic.

I also don’t think he’s childish. He’s facetious and glib sure but not childish.

I think when it came down to it Kai was way more serious about coven and witch stuff than Jo.

She craved an “ordinary” life. She wanted to become a doctor and growing up mourned the life she’d feel she never obtain because her destiny was to die in the merge with Kai.

Despite him not being able to generate his own magic he was stronger than Jo because he spent a lifetime studying magic.

I imagine before the tension got bad they actually got along and were affectionate with each other as small children. But it later grew into a bitter resentful dynamic.

Jo resents Kai for feeling like she has to die for him.

Kai resents Jo for being the twin that had magic.

And the pressure on both of them was immense.

I also don’t think Kai felt “arrogantly entitled” to become leader of the coven. He actually spent his whole life preparing for it. He was a wizard, a walking encyclopedia of Gemini history and magic. He had to make up for being a siphon. He spent 22 years studying and preparing to finally become someone the coven respects.

So when he found out his parents secretly were breeding his replacements he flipped. He also found out Jo had known about this plan for quite some time. Feeling deeply betrayed by her he non-fatally stabbed her. This was the last straw for Jo. Any sympathy she had for Kai vanished when he stabbed her and killed their siblings. So without remorse or hesitation she agreed to help lock him away.

The coven actually originally wanted to execute Kai. But it was Sheila and Jo that suggested a prison world. With Kai gone and the merge no longer her burden, she went on to live the life she always wanted. Kai in his prison spent a lot of his time becoming even more of a genius.

So 18 years later there is a complicated tragic sibling relationship. Where there is bitter resentment, betrayal, and deep down under their trauma a soft spot for one another.

This is why I hate the wedding scene. I just feel like Kai at his worst could never kill Jo. Punish her, yes but not kill. It never made sense how we went from “you’re pregnant. have a nice life sissy” to “actually sis I want you dead.”

These are all my head canons of course. Kai and his family/coven were never explored properly, so it was all left for interpretation and fan theories. Which I love btw.

I love reading other fans POV and head canons even if they’re much different than mine. Kai, the Gemini coven, Bonnie, Bonkai all such wasted potential.

There were so many directions to take Kai’s character but the writers went no where.

Bonnie just never had that. There were obvious points in the story where she should have pulled away from her friends or had a dark arc but she wasn’t allowed to.

Kai Parker was another opportunity. He was a character that hadn’t picked her friends first. He was Bonnie centric. He actually doesn’t work without Bonnie (see Legacies). He doesn’t care for her friends. He is a loner, doesn’t care about social harmony past getting to his goals and that needed to rub off on Bonnie. He could have been used to facilitate much needed self centeredness in Bonnie.

Bonkai fans vary on whether or not they should have been endgame or not but there is an understanding of how Kai is an equal who would have given Bonnie the toxic romance her peers got. Like… even Matt got with Rebekah.

Also, if Bonnie was white or wasn’t written by racists, she suddenly wouldn’t have PTSD from Kai in season 6. She would have PTSD in season 1. If realism wasn’t a thing that only matters when it comes to Bonnie’s romance relationship and no one else’s, the others would be plagued with flashbacks and none of their relationships would have happened.

But Kai still Kai, and Bonnie can’t save him from himself.

He’s arrested for the murder of his siblings, and she pays him a visit: where did it all go wrong?
