OP and their ilk need to STFU. Most of them arenât even part of the queer community or its alliesâtheyâre just a bunch of entitled straight girls who fetishize the completely made-up romance between a straight man and an alien being in a dead manâs body and who are butt-hurt simply because their OOC fanon ship didnât get validated on a show focused on the importance of family (not romance). They donât give a ratâs arse about representation or queer/minority rights or anything like thatâtheyâre simply virtue-signaling and using accusations of âhomophobiaâ and âqueerbaitingâ as weapons to further their selfish agenda.
As others have said, SPN already has plenty of representation for women, POC, and queer characters. This includes important, powerful, and/or popular characters such as Chuck, Amara, Crowley, Billie, AU!Michael, Raphael, Dagon, Abbadon, Eve, Naomi, Anna, the Alpha Vampire, Missouri, Ellen, Jo, Rufus, Charlie, Kevin, Eileen, Rowena, Max & Alicia Banes, Claire, Kaia, Patience, and many more, as well as the numerous minor and one-shot characters who fall into one or more of these categories. These characters were portrayed in positive, non-stereotypical ways, and yes while many of them died, SPN is a horror show where everyone dies and far more straight white men have died than any one else. Itâs especially hypocritical to complain about a network that has many, many other shows featuring queer, POC, and/or female main and/or major characters, including Batwoman, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Charmed, Black Lightning, Roswell NM, Nancy Drew, Legacies, and moreâgaining the CW one of the highest GLAAD ratings among TV networks.
But âfansâ like OP donât care about any of that. They only care about seeing the specific pairing they fetishize happen onscreen and nothing else. They donât care that this would involve erasing both charactersâ well-established canon sexualities and force them to behave in a completely OOC that makes no sense given their past history. They donât care that the characters have a problematic, often toxic canon relationship whose issues would only be exacerbated if it became romantic. They donât care that such a romance would hardly be good representation as a result of these issues, particularly at the last minute and completely out of nowhere. They just want to be able to wank off to these two characters making out onscreen and to be able to proclaim that theyâve âwonâ after 12 years of the vast majority of the fandom (since by their own polls, these âfansâ make up <1% of all SPN viewers and <15% of SPN blogs here on Tumblr) telling them that theyâre wrong.
And their accusations of being misled and âqueerbaitedâ are just as false as their phony virtue-signalling for ârepresentation.â At no point did TPTB promise or even imply that a particular character would come out as queer or a particular ship be made canon on SPN. In fact, multiple members of the cast and crew, including Jensen, Jared, Eric Kripke, Robert Singer, and various writers, set designers, etc., have explicitly stated over the years that neither are part of the show or ever intended to be included. Likewise, the characters involved have been very clearly portrayed as heterosexual (Dean) or mostly asexual with an interest in females (Castiel). All of the âproofâ that âfansâ like OP try to use to justify their accusations is based on homophobic and toxic masculinity-based stereotypes, cherrypicking lines or scenes taken out of context, manipulating images and GIFs, assigning meaning to nonsensical drivel like shirt colors, lighting, and set decor, and creating convoluted âmetaâ full of logical fallacies. So they only have themselves to blame for ignoring the facts and instead investing themselves in something that never existed.
They also have only themselves to blame for their rude, entitled, selfish behavior, such as shown in OPâs post. Imagine trying to damage the network, to slander or threaten the showâs cast and crew, to attack and harass other fans, to make the online fandom a toxic place by abusing the tagging system, hijacking unrelated posts, sending hateful asks and DMs, etc., to make the conventions unpleasant for both guests and other attendees by asking inappropriate questions at the panels, bringing inappropriate materials at the autograph sessions, and requesting inappropriate poses at the photo opsâto hurt real people over a fictional ship??  âFansâ like OP are reprehensible assholes who should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
