Gender

If you ask Regulus, he would say without pause he’s a boy, obviously. But things aren’t so clear cut–at least not as much as Regulus would like them to be. The simple fact is this: boys inherit–so even if Regulus would like to take the time to question his gender (which he’s not saying he is, merlin)–that ship has sailed. If Regulus is to maintain his role with the Black family, and so far he does want to, things must remain as they are.

And he can leave them alone, really. So he might feel a little unsettled in his skin sometimes–most everyone does, probably.

And then there are Dreams–where anything is possible and no one questions.

Graduate Studies

Most would look at Regulus Black: Graduate Student and laugh–and for good reason. Sure, Regulus was a decent student at Hogwarts but he didn’t necessarily apply himself in the traditional ways. He’d go off and do self study, or he’d become fixated on a obscure subsection of the course material. Sure he mastered the spells he needed to–although was that through instruction or growing up in a magical household? hard to say– but he put more energy to things that interested him specifically. He liked to take concepts and ideas apart and see if he could find another way they worked together. 

What most don’t understand is that that is exactly what Graduate/Extended study does and few are a better choice to study Hypnos Children’s abilities and how they connect with wizarding magical ability. What Regulus Black is most interested in is how could, or how does, dreamwalking or other dream magics effect the external world.

Regulus has no interest in developing memory skills, although he has heard other children of Hypos might have had a skill there, and he mostly given up the concepts of real world manipulation (as in the way of dreams)… but is there, can there be, an effect while interacting within the subconscious?

If he goes too deep, he wonders if it is something that ties into the philosophy of self–he worries he has, or others have, changed him as well there.

But would that be so bad? He doesn’t want to ask that question.

If it is so, could he have changed so many outcomes had he landed on the question earlier?

Hc + Creativity

Perhaps the only way Regulus Black is seen as creative in day to day life is his arguably near incoherent conversation patterns. Regulus will start a conversation in the middle–skipping necessary details for the other participants. He’ll assume people are on his same weave length and often not understand when they aren’t. He pays attention more to things around him then the people in front of him and this has been a common feature since he was a child.

The second way some might say ‘oh, he’s creative’ is in his academic studies–the ways in which he looks at seemingly disparate areas of research and begins to argue that, no, they are all concurrent–connected, and vital.

But most think about neither of these things. Regulus Black, day to day, wears nice, expensive, robes—but they are almost always black or dark blue or dark green. He doesn’t stand out, generally.

I went another way. Still Accepting

Regulus is sixteen when he goes to visit his cousin and ends up with  her husband. There’s seven years between them but it feels more like two. Or twenty. Or the opposite as Regulus perches on one of the couches sipping tea and eyeing the other man. He is a man, after all, despite the shiny fabrics he chooses for his robes or the touches of lace.

Regulus has been told by classmates that wizard fashion is a few steps out of time–not always, not reasonably, but haphazardly. Looking at Lucius, Regulus is not sad over it. He wishes more of the muggle fashion world would stop seeping into their clothes. Its so much easier to… deal if things are black, blue, gray, and green. When Regulus Black goes to the robe shop, no one offers pastels (not that he’d ever want them), or deep pinks and purples (wouldn’t suite at all).

Even still, Regulus sits and watches and wants to touch–this strange purple and green iridescence that Lucius wears like it’s his due. Regulus’ mother would be appalled if he wore such a thing. His cousins would say…something. But Malfoy’s have always gotten away with being visibly eccentric the way Black’s have always gotten away with being socially eccentric.

“Well, come along.” Lucius says and Regulus doesn’t know better to say no –not yet. He wants this relation to like him, in a quiet desperate way that hasn’t yet been smothered. There has been enough loss and he doesn’t want to be the cause of more of it, following along is–reasonable. “I know what to do with you.”

Regulus blames Lucius later. Lucius and his ridiculously over the top vanity. Sitting and staring in abject confusion as Lucius layers creams and powders and swirls of color. Its like a dream, but not and its–

A house elf, one Regulus doesn’t know, pops into the room and says, “Mrs. Malfoy has returned.”

Lucius swans out. Regulus stares and sways on the seat, stares and waits.

Then washes it all off in the nearest bathroom, leaving smears of magical concealer and shimmering green all across the porcelain. When Lucius cries, “All my hard work!”

Regulus curls tight, “You made me into a joke!”

Family

It’s a good thing Regulus has never watched a TV-Family nor has he spent much time with any family that might constitute as “normal” by anyone outside PureBlood Circles. Even still, Regulus understands that families love each other and generally care for each other.

And that is why, at the heart of things, Regulus truly believes if he were a better son, his parents would be better. He even believed, for a time, that if he had been able to be better, Sirius might have stayed (although this has evaporated, the thought is a well worn path in his head and he’s liable to fall back into it for other things)

These thoughts were what helped him move forward after so much family upheaval. He could sit up straighter, he could find a way to almost make eye contact–which was enough, he could enunciate better, learn finances… Of course it has never been enough but Regulus is still trying.

After all, if his family didn’t love him, they wouldn’t push him to be better (although push is a generally light term). Of course, many of the things being asked of him are against his personality or nature–but one day, maybe, he’ll be able to do those, too.

He tries less around Narcissa ( @missmvlfoy ) and her husband ( @purestpeacock ) because, simply, they haven’t demanded it of him and Lucius hasn’t ostracized him for protesting the various things Regulus refuses to do. Bellatrix ( @lestrangebtrix ) is something different all together–and Regulus wanted to imitate her throughout his late teens but now it is more of show, an attempt, and much like what he does with his parents.

Regulus stays where he is, putting a lot of effort into learning how to be the head of house, because he loves his family and, at the same time, he has comparatively fewer people outside of it.

There is no point in lying: Regulus Black sought out the Death Eaters much like a kid chases after their older sibling–over eager and desperate to be included, then chuffed when they are…

Until that feeling of pride slowly fades into the surety that they are in over their head. 

This isn’t to say that Regulus was a useless acquisition on the part of Voldemort, but that his value was weighted by his name, his position, and the potential of his demigod abilities more then anything he did at seventeen, eighteen, nineteen.

Regulus can duel–but he’s distractable and less inclined now then he was as a teen. He’s smart–but in a sideways-way, not often clear or exact in the way he conveys information. He’s also very good at keeping secrets–if he’s fully awake and has not decided to say something.

As a Death Eater, Regulus has committed murder, of course, and has attended several muggle hunts and other events–but anything that is not mandated by Voldemort is treated like a much unwanted dinner party.

He finds excuses not to attend, which are largely brushed off due to the longevity of his loyalty ad the funds he could bring upon the death of his father, or he attends in a limited capacity. There have been a dozen of hunts or raids in which Regulus has totally been there–only for him to disappear ten or fifteen minutes in having done nothing but exist and leaning on the fact they all dress alike (with masks).

DemiGod Abilities

SleepWalking. Regulus either sleeps fitfully or like the dead with very little in-between (although he’s liable to be found dozing more often than not). When he does sleep deeply, by choice or otherwise, he often Sleepwalks.

When sleepwalking Regulus is physically moving but there generally isn’t anything to worry about except in regards to stairs or active streets. While sleepwalking Regulus can and will have conversations/interact. While some of this may be general ‘this person is asleep’ nonsense–it can also be far more honest or upfront. It’s harder to control emotions/thoughts/actions when things aren’t filtered through a waking mind’s anxiety. While this is less tied to his biological father, it seemed pertinent to put it here as it relates to the concept of:

Sleepwalking (also could be called Dream Walking) This is more mental than physical, although both can be happening at the same time. If this fits with the overall concepts–Regulus would be able to visit other people’s dreams and remember it after. This would probably be most useful in passing information or warning others which could get interesting if/when loyalties become more muddled. Dreaming for Regulus is lucid, with a few rare exceptions.

Dream A Little Bigger Darling – I’m Trying

As expectations in the real world mounted, Regulus learned he could avoid most of them when asleep. Not only that, but the whole world could change. He could meet anyone, have any conversation, try anything. There would be no photographs or gossiping if he wore something other than perfectly straight dress robes–if it was done in a dream. There were no raised voices if he just wanted to sit by a window for hours, watching the ever changing view–a city, then a field full of purple star flowers, the street in front of a bar he’d never go into. Dreams were safe in a way that reality never was.

And that, in the end, makes them the most dangerous thing Regulus knows.

Dreams are seductive. They seem harmless, taking up half of a day or less, and then they end–but what if they didn’t have to?

When Regulus was 18 he slept for nearly a week straight*. He was in a cave–or was it just the bathroom he’d once shared with his brother? There was a potion and it burned him inside and out–or was that just a fever dream, a nightmare he couldn’t control? Shadows tugged at his attention, terrifying fragments of memory and fantasy–and still he would have stayed if not for someone waking him up.

Or was it dragging him out of brackish water and back into his bedroom?

Regulus still isn’t certain what happened–was there a cave? Did he simply … do something to himself? Poison or fever?

Regardless of the reality, Regulus learned a valuable lesson: he can’t be trusted to dream too long because he might decide to stay there. Or, worse, he might come out different then he went in–if the freedom is too enticing, if the conversation is too convincing. After all, rules can always be changed when you’re dreaming–why not when you’re awake?

Hc + Muggle Technology

Regulus is essentially the magical world’s equivalent to a Amish person. He only got a phone approximately six months ago–a phone that is a good decade behind technologically but built by a magical company. He can text on it, but its slow, and while he has gotten a few apps (mostly by way of of the approximately two people who know he even has a phone putting them on there) he rarely opens any up. Its very likely he has messages, snapchats, or other invitations that he has simply never seen. He also honestly does not remember the number–so if asked for it he is not actually lying when he says he doesn’t know it. Perhaps the only thing that amuses him is finding out other people’s phone numbers and texting them things very late at night when he can’t (or won’t) sleep. Being that few have his number, its a slow process for anyone to tie him to his own phone.

Regulus has not used a computer, does not have an email address, and honestly would be aghast at the idea that the should touch one. Why on earth would he? It obviously will impact any possible future children and make them squibs or something.

Regulus has never seen a movie or TV show outside a dream rendition of one. While he understands the concept, he doesn’t understand why he should bother with them. He does regularly attend the magical theatre, however, and he secretly likes the idea of becoming a patron when he is head of the Black Family Estate.

Body Modification Regulus is freaked out about contact lenses (they put glass in their eyes!) and finds their tattooing, hair dying, and other body modification to be…quaint. The latter is barbaric, of course, but he can at least somewhat conceptualized the need or what even if he thinks wizarding skill and creativity in this arena is far superior to muggles. That said, all considered, its is actually possible that if Regulus decided to pursue some form of body modification it is slightly possible that Regulus would choose muggle methods–if only because they would be less likely to b tract by family the way using magical artisans would.
