"are we allowed to get the bartenders a round here? or do they frown on that - i never read the member's handbook to be honest. the rules are fake anyway when you can just pay off a fine, you know?"

he meandered through the small and very cluttered bookstore, shuffling through every single messy shelf, tucking novel after novel safely under his arm until he couldn't carry even one more. his gaze shifted to the person standing nearby. “eight books isn't too many, right ?" a small quirk of his lips. “in fact, some might say it's not enough !”
she looks at him sympathetically. she's familiar with his struggle. "need a hand?" she can't help herself when someone looks like they're in need. can't help her gaze either, fluttering to the cover half-visible under his arm. "ooh - which one is that?"
"oh, sorry! let me just– " her hands grab the paper that had slipped from the pages of the worn journal in her hands, nearly brushing their foot. "can't lose that. or get footprints on it, otherwise i promise i'm normally not the type to get in someone's personal space." she offers an apologetic purse of her lips as she stands back straight. "i hope i didn't get in your way, i know people love taking photos here at this time."
he pats his pockets frantically, but his search will yield empty. "shit, i– i swear i had my wallet, i– do you take apple pay? or– excuse me!" this is blessedly nowhere near the top ten most embarassing moments of his life. "could i borrow cash? i will pay you back. or buy you a couple rounds. you have serious leverage in this negotiation."

beatriz only became an orphan as an adult, but she was always motherless. it was one of those odd things that didn't seem unusual to her until it was pointed out. until she was ten, her father was the center of the world and she was of his - manuel morales was a military man, stationing all around the world before taking a government position in the united states. beatriz remembers those years of travel fondly. her father was busy and stern....but his eyes whenever he saw her, even if he was standing at attention. she doesn't stay in regular touch with the other military brats she grew up with, but if they are ever in each other's vicinity, they'll meet up for a meal.
no, beatriz's mother didn't become a looming spectre until she was a little older and suddenly her dad was embarrassed by the questions she'd ask. it didn't seem fair that bea had to learn everything she enjoyed about being a woman from the internet and friends and friends' sisters. finally, manuel had to call in back up - beatriz had just started high school when she met her mother's older sister for the first time, tatiana vasquez, who could tell beatriz stories about the young woman paloma had been. how paloma had traveled the world and how manuel's sense of adventure (and ability to dance) had made paloma fall headfirst in love. tatiana promised that paloma had loved bea - when test results had revealed a risk to her life during the pregnancy, paloma could not place her life above her baby's and manuel had loved his wife enough to allow it.
and so, beatriz grows from coltish, skinny legged rascal into a more thoughtful, a more uncertain teen. the high school years aren't easy with the new awareness of the woman who shaped her life without ever witnessing it and a strange distance that now exists between her and her father. university goes better - her father is insistent that she not enlist - and her peace corps experience after that even better. her and manuel relationship improves as she finds her place in the world and feels prepared to let go of the past. she falls in love a couple times, and once it works out quite well. she and her boyfriend are discussing a potential engagement when she gets the call that her father has been taken to the hospital. he doesn't make it.

felix is most comfortable when he doesn't have to speak – of course, you wouldn't think that, looking at him by his mothers' side delivering articulate speeches about the value proposition of private healthcare or when he's finishing zoya's sentences at a party. but that's just because he's with family. it's easy (ish) to be relaxed around them. it's easy in general, to follow the flows of social dynamics than it is to lead them. felix ends up in second place most of his life, and honestly? he's quite comfortable there. vice president of student council at the prestigious private school he and zoya attend (though he's 99% sure zoya bribed other students to vote for him), vice captain of the lacrosse team (the one part of school he was sad to let go before university), hell he wasn't even valedictorian his graduating year. but he was salutatorian.
it all looks good from afar. he's too squeamish to purusue medicine properly, but there were ways to service patients without having to get too close. he studies at georgetown because....just because. it's the first time he's away from zoya and while there is a liberation he didn't expect (it's a relief to not worry what anctics she'd get up to next that would require their mothers' intervention), there is also a significant amount of loneliness. luckily he joins a frat and the upperclassmen take him under their wings. summers are better, when he's back with zoya and everything makes sense again, even their friction.
but then she goes to italy and it's impossible to get her to come back home.
graduation comes and goes. he works for a few years at their mothers' hospital. chooses an international program for his graduate studies because it's easier to visit zoya over the holidays. he watches how his sister - his older sister, though he usually thinks of her as the younger - changes once milo becomes a part of her life. he knows zoya is never coming back home.
so the best he can do is use an obnoxious combination of remote work and his seemingly unlimited time off to spend as much time as he can with his sister and nephew, and a little less time than that with his mothers. they keep asking why he never brings anyone home to meet them, and he's at a loss. no one has been worth it. and however cute he finds milo, he's not worried about starting a family when the time comes.
for now, there's sunshine and a silly spritz he can pretend he's not enjoying. isn't that plenty?
