he can’t put his finger on it, what is it about her that makes him want to work for it — maybe it’s because she’s the one resisting him, as shallow as it sounds, but he hopes that this is not who he is, that this is not what would make him so intrigued by her. there’s a lot of things they could say about ace: that he’s manipulative, heartless, yada yada, but he knows he’s not shallow. the truth is, she’s making him work for any bit of her attention and he likes it, maybe even more than he probably should. there is no script she follows, he doesn’t know what to expect from her. usually, he would joke and know when to flirt or flash a smile that would get him exactly what he wants, a muscle memory if you might, but it never worked on her. ace can’t help the laugh that escapes him because she, she is impossible. or maybe she wants him to think that she is, whatever. still laughing, he nods. “ spot on. do i sound like that ? ” a pause. “ actually, no, don’t answer that. i like living in denial, ” his tongue clicks and in the same second, orbs flick toward the harbor before moving back to the smaller creature next to him, eyebrows rising. “ honestly ? i was saving the yacht speech for minute twenty, you ruined the surprise, ” the shoulder bump doesn’t go unnoticed, but it’s the hand on his sleeve that catches him off guard for a second. it lasts a moment, probably means nothing, but his eyes still flick down to where she grabbed him before they lift back to her face. the corner of his mouth turning into a grin. “ see ? you’ve already saved my life, i owe you one, ” his tone is light, like it’s just another joke that he gets to throw, but as she keeps talking, he can’t help giving her the look of disbelief. and then he lets out a sudden tsk sound. “ i’ll know, ” he sounds confident, like he knew her his entire life and before she even gets to argue with him about it, he adds: “ you’ve got this thing, ” a gesture towards her face. “ the corner of your mouth gives you away before you catch up, ” dark hues bore into her, in silence, like he wants his words to fall in between them with a meaning. until suddenly, he changes direction without announcing it, turning on his heel to start moving in a completely different path and he doesn’t even check if she’s following because he knows she is. this time, he cuts down one of the narrower streets, the one that stands out because there’s no expensive restaurants or beach clubs. “ i hope you like places with terrible plastic chairs and best lemon granita, ” his hands stay tucked into his pockets as they keep walking, head turning to face alana. “ and if you don’t, you’ll probably love the old guy who always charges me double. i’ve been trying to convince him that’s bad for business, but he says i deserve it, whatever that means, ”
