enjoying  some  cold  gelato  on  the  afternoon  was  one  of  ivy's  favorite  habits.  she  would  go  for  a  little  sweet  treat  after  a  long  say  at  the  studio  and  would  just  do  some  people  watching,  her  way  to  find  inspiration  for  tattoos  and  art  in  general.  yet,  today,  it  wasn't  hitting  the  same.  “  is  it  just  me,  or  did  people  get  really  boring  ?  ”

“   i’m   asking   nicely,   ”    a   steady,    serious   voice   rings   around   the   area,    the   brunette’s   arms   are   folded   on   her   chest   as   she’s   staring   into   the   open   engine   compartment.    green   hues   are   looking   at   an   orange   cat   who   is   clearly   not   moving   anywhere,    even   after   she   tried   to   coax   him   with   gentle   words   and   remains   of   pastry   she   had   for   breakfast.    she   even   attempted   a   speech   about   workplace   safety.    nada.    “   listen   up   big   guy,   ”    he   weights   like   four   kilos,    by   the   way.    she’s   crouching   beside   the   yacht.    the   cat   yawns   and   as   ridiculous   as   it   sounds,    it   feels   like   a   slap   on   her   face.    “   i   have   three   hours   of   work   waiting   for   me   under   there,    you   need   to   work   with   me   here,   ”    manicured   fingers   are   pinching   the   bridge   of   her   nose   as   she   takes   a   deep   breath   and   as   her   gaze   moves   up,    now   it’s   focused   on   a   figure   in   the   corner,    clearly   witnessing   the   entire   thing.    “   don’t   even   say   a   word,   ”

the walkway isn't particularly crowded. people are drifting between stages, with some minutes to spare before the headliners take stage. he notices the patch of worn leather before anyone else does, half-buried in the sand. " woah, woah, wait– " his hand catches their arm lightly, just before their shoe comes down. " someone's night's just taken a very expensive turn, eh ? " he crouches to retrieve the wallet, brushing off the sand with the back of his hand before glancing back up. " got five minutes ? we find the owner, earn ourselves a bit of good karma ? “   you’re   coming   tonight,   right   ?   ” the  question  leaves  valentina  with  the  kind  of  brightness  that  suggests  she  has  already  decided  the  answer  for  them.  she’s  sitting  across  from  them  with  one  knee  tucked  beneath  her,  sunglasses  pushed  into  dark  hair,  a  half melted  gelato  cup  abandoned  between  them  and  a  stack  of  piazza  luna  flyers  fanned  out  beneath  her  hand — the paper sun-warmed and slightly creased from being folded in her bag for the better part of the afternoon. “  they’re  kicking  off  the  season  with  cinema  paradiso,  ”  she  continues,  as  if  this  should  mean  something  devastating  and  legally  binding.  one  of  the  flyers  is  slid  across  the  table  with  two  fingers, already  marked  in  the  corner  with  a  tiny  crooked  heart.  “  which  means  you  have  to  come.  it’s  culture.  it’s  tradition. it's old   people   pretending   they 're not crying   at   the   ending,   and   me   doing   my   absolute   best   to   look   employable   for   once.   ” and NO — she didn't cry at the ending the last time she watched it. the air in capri was just exceptionally dry that day. “   so   obviously,   i   need   you   there.   for   balance.   ”

      from   the   corner   of   his   eye   ,   bernard   noticed   the   person   looking   ―   not   at   him   ,   but   the   brown   husky   sat   to   his   right   .   a   smile   appeared   ,   warm   and   inviting   in   his   characteristic   way   .   “   his   name's   beckham   ,   and   i   promise   behind   the   murderous   look   is   a   guy   who'd   love   some   scratches   behind   the   ears   .   ”   now   it   was   up   to   them   whether   they   would   take   advantage   of   the   indirect   permission   or   continue   to   just   look   .   “   are   you   a   dog   person   ?   ”

he  meandered  through  the  small  and  very  cluttered  bookstore,  shuffling  through  every  single  messy  shelf,  tucking  novel  after  novel  safely  under  his  arm  until  he  couldn't  carry  even  one  more.  his  gaze  shifted  to  the  person  standing  nearby.  “eight  books  isn't  too  many,  right  ?"  a  small quirk  of  his  lips.  “in  fact,  some  might  say  it's  not  enough  !”

“ race   to   the   other   side? ”   an   almost   boyish   grin   stretched   across   his   face,   with   his   arms   resting   against   the   edge   of   the   club’s   pristine   pool   and   his   legs   moving   lazily   beneath   the   water.   “ if   i   win,   you   get   me   a   drink.   if   you   win,   you   get   to   drink   with   me. ”   his   smile   widened   before   he   pushed   back   to   give   them   a   fair   start.

          “  i  think  i  want  …  no,  no  the  …  ”  she  had  gone  back  and  forth  at  least  four  times  now,  distracted  by  the  smells,  music,  &  the  food.  had  put  off  breaking  away  from  the  stages  multiple  times  because  she  hadn't  wanted  to  miss  anything,  but  now  her  stomach  was  growling  too  loudly  to  ignore  anymore.  “  if  i  get  pizza  and  pasta,  then  double  back  for  gelato  later  we  shouldn't  miss  a  lot  then,  right  ?  ”  another  rumble  of  her  stomach  brought  on  her  finally  darting  forward,  sliding  in  line  for  the  pizza  before  it  could  get  longer  than  it  already  was.  “  you  know  what,  pizza  first.  pasta  after,  then  gelato.  ”
